After six weeks with the Galaxy S26 Ultra, it is clear Samsung has built one of the most complete flagship phones of the year. Its excellent Privacy Display is a genuine point of difference, the software support is class-leading, performance is consistently strong, and the new Quick Share support for AirDrop makes it one of the most seamless cross-ecosystem Android phones yet. Add in a premium design, long-term software support and faster charging, and the S26 Ultra feels thoroughly future-proofed. For photographers and videographers, there is still plenty to like. Samsung continues to offer one of the richest pro-grade camera experiences on any mainstream phone, with deep manual controls, advanced shooting modes, and enthusiast-friendly codecs, including Log, Expert RAW, and APV. Video is also a strength from the main camera in particular, especially with the improvements to Nightography. The problem is that the camera hardware doesn't stand out.

I've used the Samsung S26 Ultra as my full-time phone for a chunk of that time and it's good, but at this price it's not one of my favourites. That Snapdragon chipset can handle everything you throw at it, but how about gaming on Wuthering Waves? Here's how Sammy's cooling tech copes. Battery life was dreadful on the regular S26 and Plus models - so how is it here on their Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra sibling? I've taken over 1000 photos and shot a lot of video with this mega-phone too. While the camera hardware hasn't changed much vs the S25 Ultra, I have seen some clear improvements on the Samsung S26 Ultra. Although it's still not as impressive as the OPPO Find X9 smartphones. So that's my review, hopefully everything you need to know about one of the most expensive flagship phones of 2026. Once again, Samsung has made a fantastic phone with the Galaxy S26 Ultra. There’s not a huge amount to criticise about it – aside from the fact that once again it’s a small, incremental jump from the previous model. Perhaps my biggest gripe is that there remains only one size of phone available – for those of us who don’t want massive phones, but still want the best camera, it’s a shame not to have options. Anyway, it’s safe to say, if you’ve got an S25 Ultra, I can see little reason to immediately upgrade to this. That’s probably even true if you’ve got an S24 Ultra, too. However, if you’ve got an S22 Ultra or an S23 Ultra – or of course something from a different brand – then you will spot much more differences and feel the benefit of upgrading a lot more. The S26 Ultra is very capable of taking great pictures across a range of scenarios. Images have great colours, plenty of detail and the cameras work well in low light too.

So if you are upgrading from the Galaxy S23 Ultra or an older model, you will get significant progress in all parameters. If you have an S24 Ultra, then the upgrade may make sense thanks to the Privacy display, improved cameras and overall comfort. But S25 Ultra owners will most likely have a harder time finding sufficient arguments to switch.

At the end of the day, there has to be one question left on your mind: Is the Samsung Galaxy S Ultra series special again? It’s a big, shiny phone with a big, shiny price tag, which means there are lofty expectations for it to meet. And, if you ask me, it largely meets them with the Galaxy S26 Ultra — but it does so with a different goal than its predecessor. See, where the Galaxy S25 series was all about pushing Galaxy AI into your face in the hopes that it would paper over the cracks of an otherwise underwhelming update, the Galaxy S26 Ultra doesn’t make the same push. It relies on power, precision, reliable hardware, and Samsung’s typically excellent software support (seven years of updates here, as expected), and I think it works out much better than the previous generation, though I can understand why anyone might feel it still doesn’t have enough new to offer — my colleague Paul was a bit more underwhelmed in his video review.

For those already invested in Samsung’s ecosystem or looking for one of the most feature-packed smartphones available, the S26 Ultra remains an easy recommendation at the time of writing. But it’s also a reminder that in today’s smartphone market, the biggest improvements do not often come from completely new ideas, but from carefully balancing the trade-offs that we get with them. On a personal note, if Samsung is taking a more conservative approach to hardware upgrades.. I may be in the minority but might I suggest and pitch an S-Ultra handset with dimensions more similar to the base S26 model. Not an S25/26 Edge, not the plus model; 6.3-inch display, best chip you can put in it, spanking new and reliable camera system, no need for periscope zooms, ditch the S-Pen (that was a Note series thing anyways), UWB, ToF sensor. Make it happen, take my money.

On the face of it, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra comes across as an incremental, iterative upgrade, and there’s no getting away from that. So if you’re an S25 Ultra user, you probably won’t find it too exciting. Even when viewed in isolation, the S26 Ultra might not be a chart-topper in every aspect. That said, when you’re spending the kind of money it asks for, you can’t be looking at just one or two features that work in its favour, or don’t. You need to consider the whole package. In terms of competition, there’s its arch nemesis, the iPhone. The iPhone 17 Pro Max can’t be ignored in the premium segment, and that’s the one most likely to be considered as an option when eying the S26 Ultra. And Apple is the only other brand (the very first one in fact), that has a super-strong ecosystem play. And if you’re confused between the iPhone and the Galaxy, the answer lies in that one word — ecosystem. Choosing one means choosing the side you want to be on. On the Android side of the fence, competition has heated up. The Google Pixel 10 Pro XL is another strong contender, with camera and AI being its core strengths. However, performance isn’t its strong suit.

Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra is easily one of the best phones I’ve ever used. While it’s not perfect, it just works and nothing seems too difficult or confusing. Having Bixby, Gemini and Perplexity on one device is kind of overkill, but that just shows the number of options that are available on the device. It doesn’t have the OnePlus 15’s battery, but takes better pictures, has a slimmer design and is sold at Canadian carriers. I prefer the selfies on the Pixel 10 Pro, and I always miss Now Playing when I leave the Pixel, but the S26U still offers great photography, a better battery, and is far more powerful. There’s give and take with just about any phone on the market, but overall, this is a solid package. It’s expensive (compared to those other devices), which is worth mentioning, but you’re paying to have a great phone, a jack of all trades and a master of some, and that might be worth it for some users. Samsung’s 256GB Galaxy S26 Ultra costs $1,899.99, which again is an expensive pill to swallow, even if it is a bit more affordable than last year’s S25 Ultra.

One UI 8.5 is great — feature-rich, with some useful AI tools (especially in the Gallery), and a level of refinement that, in my opinion, far surpasses that of a Pixel or any other Android phone.

So, should you buy the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra? Well, do you think the privacy display and the battery life improvement are important? If yes, then okay – get the S26 Ultra. That privacy display is still the best new exclusive hardware-level feature on the S26 Ultra that competitors will take time to integrate into their devices. Plus, in my opinion, One UI is still my personal favorite Android skin. I absolutely cannot live without Modes and Routines for all the automation, and Samsung Wallet for all the features it has.The price of the S26 Ultra is definitely higher than the previous generation – at least for the Malaysian retail price, there is a small price hike. At least it’s not as bad as the base S26 and the S26+, but it’s still a price hike nonetheless. But, if you don’t care about the privacy display… then listen further. One UI 8.5 is currently on the S26 series only, but I do believe that all of the new features will come to the previous generations as well.

And automated app actions seem to have a lot of potential, assuming the integrations with Uber, DoorDash and other apps works as promised. The reasons to get the S26 Ultra right now and upgrade your phone are features like Privacy Display. At a time phone makers are being criticized for iterative updates, this is a truly innovative feature that solves a problem and it is completely customizable. I’m also very impressed with the Horizon Lock feature when shooting video (I challenge you to get shaky footage) and the improved low-light photos and videos.

There's a strange feeling I often get when testing phones. After I got everything updated and set up the way I like, I noticed it even more with the S26 Ultra. The issue is that despite using a brand new device with shiny hardware, better performance and a more refined design, I'm still largely doing the same things and using the same apps as I was before (like Google Maps, Gmail and whatever my go-to mobile games are at the moment). This means my daily flow is basically unchanged from device to device. However, if you're paying attention, you'll notice things like higher framerates while gaming, sharper and more well-exposed photos at night and helpful suggestions like when the phone surfaces relevant photos in the middle of a text conversation.

Initially, I felt as though the Galaxy S26 Ultra was another iterative upgrade, and in a lot of respects, it is on paper. Despite this, Samsung has pushed through a lot of great changes and upgrades that could prove to be genuinely useful — and are likely to be promptly copied by some of the competition. The Privacy Screen is the standout security feature on the S26 Ultra. Likewise, the camera's horizontal lock is not a wholly original idea, but it is a novel idea for a smartphone that could prove very useful. The rest of the phone's hardware looks solid, too. We've got a potentially major performance boost from the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, and the larger camera aperture should offer major improvements to photo quality — especially in low-light conditions.

Those with the Galaxy S25 Ultra might be a little annoyed to learn they’re not getting the new Galaxy AI features like agentic AI and Now Nudge. Samsung says this is because the S25 Ultra isn’t powerful enough to run them. But while that’s a bummer, Samsung did something else surprising with the Galaxy S26 series. The Galaxy S26 and the Galaxy S26 Ultra 256GB are more affordable than their predecessors. (However, Samsung also isn’t offering a 128GB S26 variant this year.) In a one-on-one interview with Raj Doshi, Head of Mobile at Samsung Canada, he shared that Samsung made these handsets more affordable because of their popularity. However, the company also made the other storage/RAM configurations more pricey, as the company is being affected by the increase in RAM prices worldwide. While I don’t think Samsung took any big risks with the S26 Ultra, it seems like it’ll be just a solid experience, especially if the AI is everything it’s cracked up to be. While I love gimmicky hardware, I like my software to just work well and make my life easier, and it looks like Samsung is aiming for that experience.

That's fine, and while we'd have loved a larger battery inside, the new phone shapes up to be a good upgrade target for users of the Galaxy S22 Ultra and older devices, which are nearing the end of their shelf life. The same applies to the Pixel 10 Pro XL, which is a continuation rather than an evolution over the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Google doesn't like making stark moves, so the gap between the Pixel 9 Pro XL and the Pixel 10 Pro XL is pretty much what we should brace for in the coming years. Either way, both will be among the best top Android flagships you'd be able to get in the US in early 2026, with the Pixel having the benefit of already being on the shelves.

Samsung is once again playing things extremely safe with its flagships. No new product names and categories, no major changes, no big shakeups in the performance or design areas, and no interesting upgrades. What we get is a very familiar pair of devices that retain their major selling points and key differentiators but start to look a bit boring when superimposed on the current Android market. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the phone that maximalists and power users will inevitably pick, as it will most certainly end up being the most powerful Android phone available in the US for the foreseeable future. With the best camera and most features and functionalities on board, it will be the expensive but no-compromise phone to get in early 2026. Unfortunately, all of that is soured by the formulaic and boring release. At the same time, the Galaxy S26 Plus continues being that weirdly positioned device that feels a bit off. It's a flagship, but not quite, and it's compact, but not as much as the Galaxy S26. Once you consider buying the Galaxy S26 Plus, it's very easy to get upsold to the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which could be the only reason for its existence.
