NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition Review: RTX 3090-prestaties voor minder, maar nog steeds een lage waardepropositie

Ti(e)-ing met de 3090. De NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti komt als een mid-cycle refresh om de RTX 3080 te verdringen als de snelste gaming GPU van het bedrijf, negen maanden nadat het bedrijf voor het eerst de Ampere-architectuur introduceerde. De RTX 3080 Ti heeft een iets afgeslankte variant van de GA102 GPU die ook in de RTX 3090 zit, met de helft minder VRAM. We maken een testrit met de RTX 3080 Ti FE en evalueren hoe deze kaart van 1.199 dollar zich verhoudt tot de RTX 3080 en de AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT.

NVIDIA lanceerde de GeForce RTX 3080 Ti tijdens Computex 2021 vorige maand naast de RTX 3070 Ti. De RTX 3080 Ti is een iets afgeslankte versie van de "BFGPU" RTX 3090 en is meer een mid-cycle refresh dan iets revolutionairs. In wezen kijken we naar een beter binned Ampere GA102 chip dan de RTX 3080.

De RTX 3080 Ti verdringt nu de RTX 3080 als NVIDIA's vlaggenschip gaming GPU. Hij komt op een moment dat de beschikbaarheid van GPU's nog steeds een punt van zorg is, met de meeste kaarten die snel uitverkocht zijn en tegen een aanzienlijke prijsverhoging boven de maximumprijs. De RTX 3080 Ti kan ook worden gezien als NVIDIA's antwoord op een herlevend AMD, dat zijn mojo terug lijkt te hebben gekregen met de lancering van RDNA 2-gebaseerde GPU's. De Radeon RX 6900 XT komt in verschillende titels op treffende afstand van de RTX 3090, wat betekent dat gamers niet alleen naar NVIDIA hoeven op te kijken voor een vlaggenschip game-ervaring, zolang ray-tracing prestaties niet het belangrijkste aankoopcriterium zijn

Hoewel gepositioneerd tussen de RTX 3080 en de RTX 3090, neigt de RTX 3080 Ti meer naar RTX 3090-prestatieniveau's en heeft hij een bijbehorende prijskaartje van US$1,199. Dit is weliswaar US$300 minder dan de RTX 3090's MSRP (US$1,499), maar hij is ook US$500 duurder dan de RTX 3080 (US$699). In India wordt de RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition (FE) verkocht voor ₹1.22.000.

In deze review onderwerpen we de RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition aan een grondige inspectie om te zien hoe goed deze tussentijdse vernieuwing is voor gamers die een nieuwe GPU willen aanschaffen.

Een rondleiding door de NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FE

Qua design is er geen verschil tussen de Founders Editions van de RTX 3080 en de RTX 3080 Ti, afgezien van de nieuwe SKU-naam. Ondanks de bijna RTX 3090 specificaties, heeft NVIDIA ervoor gekozen om het 2-sleuven ontwerp van de RTX 3080 te behouden.

Hoewel dit goed is voor de esthetiek van de behuizing, voorspelt het niet veel goeds voor de koeling en het geluidsniveau van de ventilatoren, zoals we hieronder zullen zien. De dubbele 9-bladige 85 mm ventilatoren doen hun werk behoorlijk door de kaart enigszins koel te houden, en de metalen achterplaat helpt bij het beter afvoeren van de warmte naar de omgeving. De thermische oplossing is capabel genoeg, maar lijkt niet helemaal van dezelfde klasse te zijn als die van de RTX 3090.

Zoals gebruikelijk bij Ampere FE kaarten, zien we de 12-pins Molex MicroFit 3.0 voedingsconnector in het midden bovenaan; er is een dubbele 8-pins naar 12-pins connector meegeleverd in de doos. De aansluitmogelijkheden zijn standaard en omvatten een HDMI 2.1-uitgang en drie DisplayPort 1.4a-uitgangen. DisplayPort 1.4a stelt de RTX 3080 Ti in staat om twee 8K 60 Hz schermen aan te sturen met elk een enkele kabel zonder veel zweetdruppels, terwijl HDMI 2.1 zorgt voor 4K 144 Hz en 8K 30 Hz uitvoer.

Zoals het geval is met de meeste FE-kaarten, gloeit het GeForce RTX-logo in het wit en kan het niet worden aangestuurd door RGB-software. Het is echter wel mogelijk om een deel van de verlichting op het binnenframe te regelen via Corsair iCUE of andere RGB-apps van derden.

NVIDIA biedt standaard drie jaar garantie op alle GeForce Founders Editions-kaarten.

De RTX 3080 Ti FE biedt een basisklok van 1.365 MHz en 1.665 MHz boost. Er is ruimte om boost boven deze waarde te bereiken, hoewel we niet vonden dat hij in staat was om de 2.000 MHz grens te overschrijden zoals de RTX 3090. De RTX 3080 Ti wordt geschat op een 350 W TGP. Het is mogelijk om het energiedoel te verhogen met nog eens 14% tot ongeveer 400 W, maar we liepen tegen stabiliteitsproblemen aan tijdens de stresstests.

De RTX 3080 Ti FE haalt het maximum uit de 384-bit bus van het GDDR6X-geheugen, waardoor slechts twee VRAM-capaciteiten mogelijk zijn - 12 GB en 24 GB. NVIDIA heeft de 24 GB gereserveerd voor de RTX 3090 met als doel om creatieve professionals te verleiden die ook gamen, terwijl de RTX 3080 Ti het moet doen met 12 GB. Hoewel de kaart slechts 2 GB extra VRAM lijkt te hebben in vergelijking met de RTX 3080, kijken we naar een toename van 20% in geheugenbandbreedte met 912 GB/s, wat behoorlijk goed zou moeten voorspellen voor het omgaan met zware in-game texturen, althans in de huidige oogst van AAA-titels.

De testbank - Gebaseerd op de AMD Ryzen 7 5800X en X570 platform

We gebruikten eenAMD Ryzen 7 5800Xals de processor van onze keuze. De Ryzen 7 5800X werd gekoppeld aan een MSI Prestige X570 Creation moederbord, 32 GB (16 GB x2) G.SKILL Trident Z Neo DDR4-3200 RAM (timings 16-19-19-39), en een Gigabyte Aorus NVMe Gen4 1 TB SSD

Windows 10 21H1 met de laatste cumulatieve updates (Build 19043.1081) werd geïnstalleerd op de Aorus NVMe Gen4 PCIe SSD, terwijl twee 1 TB Crucial MX500 SATA SSD's werden gebruikt voor het uitvoeren van benchmarks en games. Resizable BAR werd ingeschakeld in de UEFI, wat voor een lichte prestatieverbetering kan zorgen in bepaalde titels.

De koeling van de Ryzen 7 5800X was een Corsair iCUE H115i Elite Capellix AIO koeler. De bouw was ondergebracht in een Corsair iCUE 4000X RGB-behuizing met een Thermaltake Toughpower 850 W 80 Plus Gold als de gekozen voeding. Alle tests werden uitgevoerd met gesloten behuizing om typisch gebruik te simuleren.

Een OnePlus U Series 55U1 smart TV, draaiend op 4K 60 Hz in Game Mode, werd via HDMI aangesloten op de RTX 3080 Ti. De kleurenuitvoer werd ingesteld op volledig 32-bits RGB in het NVIDIA-bedieningspaneel en Windows desktop scaling werd ingesteld op 100%.

Synthetische benchmarks - Op gelijke voet met de RTX 3090

De NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti laat een interessant beeld zien als het aankomt op benchmark resultaten - zowel synthetisch als in de echte wereld. Voor alle intenties en doeleinden, kijken we hier inderdaad naar een RTX 3090. De RTX 3080 Ti komt slechts twee streaming multiprocessors (SM's) tekort ten opzichte van de RTX 3090 en, voor het grootste deel, lijkt dit weinig tot geen invloed te hebben in de meeste benchmarks. We zien de RTX 3080 Ti wel beter presteren dan de RTX 3090 in een handvol tests, waarschijnlijk omdat software en drivers in de loop der tijd verbeterd kunnen zijn.

In 3DMark, AMD's RDNA 2 gebaseerde RX 6800 XT en RX 6900 XT een waarneembare voorsprong in alle Fire Strike Graphics tests, hoewel de RTX 3080 Ti min of meer gelijk staat met de RTX 3090 in Time Spy Graphics. Vergeleken met de RTX 3080 is de RTX 3080 Ti tussen de 13% en 17% sneller in Fire Strike Graphics, afhankelijk van de resolutie, terwijl hij slechts 9% beter is in Time Spy Graphics.

Zoals verwacht laten de NVIDIA kaarten hun RDNA 2 rivalen gemakkelijk achter zich in de Port Royal ray-tracing benchmark, waarbij de RTX 3080 Ti op gelijke hoogte staat met de RTX 3090 en respectievelijk 13% en 34% sneller is dan de RTX 3080 en Radeon RX 6900 XT.

Het prestatieverschil tussen de RTX 3080 Ti en RTX 3090 lijkt iets groter te worden in Unigine, met name in de OpenGL-versies van de Heaven en Valley-benchmarks. Superpositie laat zien dat de RTX 3090 en RTX 3080 Ti op gelijke voet met elkaar staan. De enige uitzondering is te zien in de 720p Low component van de test, waar de RTX 3080 Ti bijna 25% voor ligt op de RTX 3090, waarschijnlijk omdat deze resolutie meer CPU-gebonden is. Over het algemeen zien we dat de RTX 3080 Ti ongeveer 14% sneller is dan de gemiddelde RTX 3080 bij resoluties van 1080p en hoger.

Merk op dat we deze keer een andere CPU hebben gebruikt, de Ryzen 7 5800X, wat invloed kan hebben op sommige van de synthetische benchmark resultaten.

Game benchmarks - RTX 3080 Ti scoort een home run op 4K Ultra

NVIDIA prijst de RTX 3080 Ti aan als de gaming GPU van het vlaggenschip, en hij stelt niet teleur. Een flink aantal titels is speelbaar op volledig gemaximaliseerde instellingen op 4K in de buurt van de 100 fps-grens. Slechts een handvol games, zoals Cyberpunk 2077 (DLSS uit), Total War: Three Kingdoms, en Watch Dogs: Legion (DLSS uit) hebben moeite om de 60 fps sweet spot te bereiken op 4K Ultra. Degenen die het meeste uit hun beeldschermen met hoge verversingssnelheid willen halen, hebben baat bij een verlaging van de resolutie naar 1440p.

Voor het grootste deel ligt de RTX 3080 Ti FE ruim binnen de foutmarge van de gameprestaties van de RTX 3090. De lichte vermindering in CUDA cores en de halvering van het geheugen van de RTX 3090 lijken een verwaarloosbaar effect te hebben in de huidige titels. Ditis een goede zaak, omdat het zich vertaalt in een besparing van US$300 (op MSRP!) ten opzichte van de RTX 3090 als je primaire use case 4K Ultra 60 fps+ gaming is.

We vonden de RTX 3080 Ti tussen de 11% en 22% sneller dan de Radeon RX 6900 XT in onze game testsuite. Dat gezegd hebbende, de Radeon RDNA 2 kaarten hadden een voorsprong in Assassin's Creed Valhalla(+11%, 6900 XT) en Hitman 3(+7%, 6900 XT).

We testten ray-tracing prestaties in titels als Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Metro Exodus, Resident Evil Village, en Control met DLSS uit en, heel interessant, de RTX 3080 Ti leek waarneembare voordelen te bieden ten opzichte van zelfs de RTX 3090 met RT On. Vergeleken met de RTX 3080, kijken we naar ergens tussen de 12% en 21% toename in RT prestaties, afhankelijk van de resolutie

NVIDIA lijkt goed werk te hebben geleverd met de thermiek, zoals blijkt uit de vrij consistente prestaties in de buurt van de 174 fps-grens die is waargenomen in The Witcher 3

stress test op 1080p Ultra. We zien echter dat de kaart het zich kan veroorloven om een hogere fps te halen, zij het voor een korte periode van ongeveer vijf minuten, alvorens terug te vallen naar de oorspronkelijke waarde. Dit kan waarschijnlijk te wijten zijn aan een opportunistische klokverhoging op dit punt tijdens de stresstest.
