AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT Review: Bijna-RTX 3090-prestaties voor 500 dollar minder, maar slechts marginaal beter dan RX 6800 XT

Radeon is terug in de chat. De Radeon RX 6900 XT markeert AMD's terugkeer in de vlaggenschip GPU-ruimte sinds het uitbrengen van de R9 Fury X in 2015. De RX 6900 XT biedt uitstekende rasterprestaties die hem stevig binnen het bereik brengen van de NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090, ondanks enkele tekortkomingen in ray tracing en het ontbreken van AI-gebaseerde supersampling. We nemen de AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT voor een testrit en zien hoe goed Team Red tot nu toe gevorderd is met RDNA 2.

AMD had (en heeft nog steeds) een geweldige strijd tegen Intel in de CPU ruimte met Ryzen, maar de Radeon eenheid is tot nu toe aanzienlijk achtergebleven bij de concurrentie. De laatste keer dat we een AMD vlaggenschip grafische kaart in één adem genoemd zagen worden met die van NVIDIA was de op Fiji gebaseerde Radeon R9 Fury X die concurreerde met de NVIDIA Maxwell GeForce 980 Ti in 2015

Lange tijd bleven NVIDIA's vlaggenschip Turing-onderdelen onaangetast. AMD's Vega 56, Vega 64en de Radeon VII deden weinig om NVIDIA slapeloze nachten te bezorgen. Pas in juli 2019 smaakte AMD matig succes met de op Navi 10 gebaseerde Radeon RX 5700 XT, maar die was op zijn best vergelijkbaar met de GeForce RTX 2070 Super

Dat is nu allemaal verleden tijd. Afgelopen oktober onthulde AMD officieel de Radeon RX 6000-serie kaarten, bestaande uit de RX 6800, RX 6800 XT, de RX 6900 XT en meer recent, de RX 6700 XTmet de belofte het op te nemen tegen NVIDIA's high-end Ampere-aanbod, zoals de RTX 3070, RTX 3080en RTX 3090 voor 1440p en 4K gaming

De RX 6900 XT wordt gezien als een RTX 3090-concurrent, althans in termen van pure rasterprestaties (met kanttekeningen, natuurlijk). NVIDIA-kaarten hebben momenteel de overhand als het gaat om features als ray tracing en AI-gebaseerde supersampling. De RX 6900 XT heeft echter ook een paar trucjes achter de hand

In deze review onderwerpen we de Navi 21 XTX kaart aan een kritische blik en kijken we of hij het aandurft het op te nemen tegen NVIDIA's Ampere Goliath

Een rondleiding door de AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT

Bij het openen van de doos werden we begroet door een "Welkom bij het Rode Team" boodschap. De verpakking bevat een Radeon-karton waarin een snelstartgids en een "R"-toetsenbordsleutel zijn ingesloten. De "R"-toets is vormgegeven in het typische Radeon-lettertype en laat RGB-licht door. Helaas zat er in ons pakket geen AMD-muismat bij, die echter wel in de doos zou moeten zitten.

Wat de kaart zelf betreft, zien we dat AMD de blower-achtige koeler van de RX 5700 XT referentiekaart heeft gedumpt en in plaats daarvan heeft gekozen voor een koeler met drie ventilatoren. De ventilatoren hebben het duidelijke "R"-logo en zijn ingebouwd in een helder zilverkleurig metalen frame. Aan de bovenkant vinden we een rode rand die over de hele lengte van de kaart loopt en ook een RGB Radeon logo.

Het Radeon logo gloeit standaard in het rood, maar u kunt een CoolerMaster RGB LED tool downloaden om tussen de kleuren te schakelen. We durven te gokken dat CoolerMaster iets te maken heeft met het koelsysteem van het referentie-ontwerp, afgaande op wat we eerder hebben gezien met Ryzen's Wraith Prism stock koeler.

Aan de bovenkant zien we twee 8-pins voedingsaansluitingen die naar de rechterrand zijn geplaatst - geen 12-pins fancy buitenaards antennegedoe zoals bij NVIDIA, wat goed of slecht kan zijn, afhankelijk van je voorkeur.

Aan de achterkant hebben we twee DisplayPort 1.4 uitgangen, een HDMI 2.1 uitgang, en een USB Type-C met DisplayPort. Het is goed om te zien dat AMD een USB Type-C poort aanbiedt op een moment dat NVIDIA deze blijkbaar heeft gedumpt om wat energie te besparen op de Ampere kaarten.

Het is niet echt nieuws, maar het is al een tijdje geleden dat AMD afscheid heeft genomen crossFire ondersteuning, dus er is geen CrossFire Bridge poort beschikbaar. NVIDIA, daarentegen, biedt nog steeds een NVLink connector op de RTX 3090.

Over het geheel genomen heeft de RX 6900 XT een keurig 2.7-slot referentie-ontwerp, dat vrijwel universeel aantrekkelijk zou moeten zijn.

De Radeon RX 6900 XT is gebaseerd op de RDNA 2 Navi 21 XTX GPU - een 7 nm onderdeel dat 80 compute units (CU's) biedt, oftewel 5.120 shading units. De kaart heeft een basisklok van 1.825 MHz. Voor de meeste toepassingen draait de GPU op 2.015 MHz, wat AMD adverteert als de Game Clock, met een boost tot 2.250 MHz. Afhankelijk van de werkbelasting en de beschikbare thermische speling zijn ook nog hogere boosts mogelijk.

Net als de RX 6800 XT biedt ook de RX 6900 XT 16 GB GDDR6 VRAM op een 256-bit bus, wat een geheugenbandbreedte oplevert van maximaal 512 GB/s. AMD heeft de Radeon RX 6900 XT uitgerust met een 128 MB Infinity Cache die het langzamere (maar gemakkelijker verkrijgbare) GDDR6 VRAM en de kleinere 256-bit geheugenbus als het ware compenseert om prestatieniveaus te bereiken die vergelijkbaar zijn met wat NVIDIA kan met een grotere bus, duurder GDDR6X VRAM en hogere geheugenbandbreedte

De Radeon RX 6900 XT is berekend op een totaal boordvermogen van 300 W. Tijdens stresstests hebben we gezien dat de kern alleen al tot 255 W kan trekken

De testbank

We gebruikten een AMD X570-platform als testbank voor het evalueren van de RX 6900 XT. Onze opstelling omvat een AMD Ryzen 9 5950X processor gekoppeld aan 32 GB (16 GB x) G.SKILL Trident Z Neo DDR4-3200 RAM (timings 16-19-19-39) op een MSI Prestige X570 Creation moederbord

Een Gigabyte Aorus NVMe Gen4 1 TB SSD werd gebruikt om Windows 10 20H2 met de laatste cumulatieve patches te draaien, terwijl benchmarks en games werden geïnstalleerd op twee 1 TB Crucial MX500 SATA SSD's.

Om de 16C/32T Ryzen 9 5950X koel te houden werd een Corsair iCUE H115i Capellix AIO koeler gebruikt. De opstelling was ondergebracht in een Corsair iCUE 4000X RGB-behuizing met een Thermaltake Toughpower 850 W 80 Plus Gold als voeding.

De RX 6900 XT werd gekoppeld aan een OnePlus U Series 55U1 smart TV die draait op 4K 60 Hz. De kleurenuitvoer werd ingesteld op Full RGB 4:4:4 pixelformaat in Radeon software en Windows desktop scaling werd ingesteld op 100%.

Synthetische benchmarks

In het merendeel van de 3DMark tests is de RX 6900 XT gelijkwaardig of zelfs beter dan de NVIDIA RTX 3090. De maximale voorsprong wordt gezien in 3DMark Fire Strike tot 1440p. In de 4K Fire Strike Ultra, vermindert de voorsprong tot ongeveer 11% ten opzichte van de gemiddelde RTX 3090. Time Spy laat echter zien dat de AMD en NVIDIA vlaggenschepen min of meer op gelijke voet met elkaar staan

De mogelijkheden van de RDNA2-architectuur op het gebied van ray tracing zijn op zich niet slecht, maar de tekortkomingen komen duidelijk naar voren in de Port Royal test, waar de RX 6900 XT merkbaar 15% achterloopt op de RTX 3080 en aanzienlijk op de RTX 3090 met 24%. Dit gezegd hebbende, zien we wel dat de RX 6900 XT ongeveer 9% beter presteert dan de gemiddelde RTX 2080 Ti in deze benchmark.

Unigine-benchmarks laten betere scores zien in DirectX-tests dan in OpenGL-tests, vooral in de Valley- en Heaven-benchmarks. In Superposition krijgt de RX 6900 XT klop in de 8K Optimized-test, waarbij hij de RTX 3090 met 20% achter zich laat. Dit verschil wordt aanzienlijk kleiner bij lagere resoluties, en we zien de GPU slechts 8% achterblijven in de 4K geoptimaliseerde benchmark

Berekeningsbenchmarks

De RX 6900 XT legt het in compute-benchmarks af tegen de RTX 3090. In ComputeMark zien we AMD's topmodel tussen 3% en 26% achterlopen op de RTX 3090, afhankelijk van de test. Interessant is dat LuxMark de volledige kracht van RDNA 2's rekenkracht laat zien, met een voorsprong van maar liefst 114% op de RTX 3090 in de Sala GPU-only test, hoewel de kaart een terugval heeft van ongeveer 12% in de Room GPU-only benchmark.

De prestaties in Geekbench 5.3 compute met OpenCL en Vulkan lijken niet indrukwekkend te zijn, met zelfs de RTX 3080 die marginaal betere prestaties levert dan de RX 6900 XT in OpenCL. Hoewel de kansen keren in het Vulkan-gedeelte van de test in vergelijking met de RTX 3080, weet de RTX 3090 Founders Edition hier nog steeds een comfortabele voorsprong van 67% te behalen op de RX 6900 XT

Professionele toepassingen

Navi 2x lijkt goede prestatieverbeteringen te laten zien in pro apps ten opzichte van de Navi 1x onderdelen, en zelfs het beste van Ampere consumenten aanbod van NVIDIA. Hoewel de Titan RTX en Quadro RTX 5000 in het algemeen betere keuzes zijn als het gaat om CAD/CAM, energie, auto's en medische toepassingen, laten de individuele scores van de onderdelen in de SPECviewperf tests zien dat de RX 6900 XT niet onderdoet, tenminste als het gaat om specifieke 3D authoring en CAD workflows

Spel benchmarks

In de overgrote meerderheid van de geteste games presteert de RX 6900 XT op de verwachte lijnen bij 4K Ultra instellingen. De RX 6900 XT lijkt wel een voordeel te hebben ten opzichte van de NVIDIA-kaarten in titels die geoptimaliseerd zijn voor AMD-hardware, zoals Assassin's Creed Odyssey en Assassin's Creed Valhalla. AMD's vlaggenschip-kaart voerde de hitlijsten aan in Battlefield V, Hitman 3, F1 2020, en Forza Horizon 4 ook

Dat gezegd hebbende, de RTX 3090 toonde ergens tussen 9% en 20% voordeel in de meeste titels die we hebben getest, soms oplopend tot 30% bij 4K Ultra in Mafia Definitive Edition. De aanwezigheid van acht extra rekeneenheden (CU's) in de RX 6900 XT lijkt geen significant voordeel op te leveren ten opzichte van de RX 6800 XT in gaming

Ray tracing, hoewel beschikbaar, verbleekt in vergelijking met de huidige generatie Ampere kaarten. AMD moet echter nog steeds geprezen worden voor het bereiken van ray tracing prestaties die meestal op gelijke voet of soms iets beter zijn dan de RTX 2080 Ti.

Op De Witcher 3 stresstest op 1080p Ultra-instellingen biedt de RX 6900 XT over het algemeen redelijk goede aanhoudende prestaties in de buurt van 172 fps. We zien echter af en toe een throttling, die de fps aanzienlijk doet dalen. Dit kan waarschijnlijk worden toegeschreven aan een dip in de kloksnelheid wanneer de kaart in de buurt komt van de hot spot of junction temperature van 110 °C
