Consequent goed! De Gaming X Trio grafische kaartenserie is al lange tijd op de markt en biedt altijd iets meer prestaties dan Nvidia's referentie vanwege de zeer goede koeling en de hogere TDP's. Zo krijgt de GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio ook een 340-watt BIOS en is nog steeds zeer discreet qua ruis onder belasting. Uit onze review zal blijken wat MSI's nieuwe model nog meer te bieden heeft.

Met de MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio hebben we het op één na snelste model van MSI's RTX 3080 serie in beoordeling. Alleen de nieuwe SuprimX-serie zou het qua prestatiesmoeten

kunnen overtreffen. Dit is in ieder geval wat de technische specificaties aangeven.

Ons testexemplaar van MSI ziet er een beetje verouderd uit in vergelijking met het nieuwe Suprim X-model. Desalniettemin heeft de Gaming X Trio serie zich de afgelopen jaren goed gevestigd en heeft het altijd veel prestaties uit de grafische chips geperst dankzij de zeer goede koeling. Een andere belangrijke factor hiervoor is dat MSI ook de TDP verhoogt en het referentiemodel niet als richtlijn gebruikt. Met een goede 32 centimeter is de MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio zeer lang en past niet in elke koffer, waarmee zeker rekening moet worden gehouden bij de aanschaf.

De afwerking is op een zeer hoog niveau. Helaas is de achterplaat alleen gemaakt van kunststof en niet zoals gebruikelijk van aluminium. Het oppervlak had hier als extra warmteafvoer kunnen worden gebruikt. Maar warmte is geen probleem met de MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio zoals we in de test hebben ontdekt. RGB-verlichting is uiteraard een must, en het trekt de aandacht als de koffer een zijraam heeft.

We hebben het al gehad over het hogere stroomverbruik, en om precies te zijn, de grafische kaart heeft tot 340 watt tot zijn beschikking. Het referentiemodel had slechts 320 watt. Tegelijkertijd betekent dit een stabielere en hogere boost kloksnelheid onder belasting. Om de grafische kaart van voldoende stroom te voorzien, zijn er drie 8-pins voedingsconnectoren intern nodig, wat betekent dat MSI de 12-pins connector van het referentiemodel niet gebruikt. Extern biedt de grafische kaart één HDMI 2.1-poort en drie DisplayPort 1.4a-aansluitingen. Hierdoor kan de MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio 8K bij 60 Hz of 4K bij 120 Hz weergeven. We hebben dit kunnen bevestigen in de test

Ons testsysteem met als basis de AMD Ryzen 9 5900X

Een actueel AMD-platform op basis van de Asus X570 ROG Crosshair VIII dient als testsysteem. De CPU (AMD Ryzen 9 5900X) biedt goede CPU-prestaties, en we gebruiken een AIO (Alphacool Eisbaer Aurora 360mm) voor de koeling. De 32 GB RAM is afkomstig van Corsair en klokken op 4.000 MHz. We gebruiken de Acer Predator XB321HK als monitor. Hij beperkt ons niet vanwege zijn UHD-capaciteit. Op dit punt willen we AMD bedanken voor het leveren van het testplatform en Corsair voor de RAM-kit

De kloksnelheden van de MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio

Er is niets veranderd aan de basiskloksnelheid, want de MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio klokt ook op 1.440 MHz. Er zijn echter wel afwijkingen in de boostkloksnelheid ten opzichte van het referentiemodel. MSI's model biedt een goede 100 MHz. Toch bood Asus met de RTX 3080 ROG Strix Gaming OC een nog hogere boost kloksnelheid. Wat dit precies betekent, leest u verderop in de review. Ook op het gebied van VRAM blijft MSI trouw aan het referentiemodel, wat omgekeerd betekent dat ook de geheugenbandbreedte van 760 GB/s onveranderd blijft

Synthetische benchmarks

In de synthetische benchmarks heeft het GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio de strijd aangebonden met het GeForce RTX 3080 ROG Strix Gaming OC. Soms loopt MSI voorop en soms loopt het model van Asus voorop. Toch staan beide modellen achter de GeForce RTX 3090 die we onlangs in de vorm van MSI's Suprim X hebben beoordeeld GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, de GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio kan zich onderscheiden met een voorsprong van ongeveer 30%. AGeForce RTX 3070 is ongeveer even snel op dit moment. De zeer dureNvidia Titan RTX kan iets beter presteren dan een GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, maar het lukt niet om de prestaties van de GeForce RTX 3080 te bereiken

De gamingtests die we hebben uitgevoerd laten zeer goede prestaties zien in moderne games. Toch vereist de GeForce RTX 3080 hoge resoluties om niet vertraagd te worden door de CPU-limiet. Vergeleken met Asus moet ons testexemplaar van MSI vaak op de achtergrond blijven, hoewel het gat zeer klein is en zelfs als een meettolerantie kan worden beschouwd. Over het algemeen zijn beide modellen even snel. Alleen deGeForce RTX 3090 levert meer FPS bij hoge resoluties. Vergeleken met AMD kan Nvidia zich met de RTX 3080 in sommige spellen laten gelden. Maar AMD kan de Radeon RX 6800 XT ook goed bijbenen, en afhankelijk van het spel kan AMD zich direct achter de GeForce RTX 3090 met zijn nieuwe grafische kaart plaatsen.

Gezien de pure spelprestaties kunnen we de MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio zonder enige beperking aanbevelen. Het ietwat lage VRAM laat echter nog steeds een slechte smaak achter, en helaas draagt dit er niet toe bij dat de GPU op de lange termijn goed is uitgerust. Toch is de 10 GB VRAM op dit moment nog steeds voldoende om speelbare framerates in 2160p op het scherm te brengen. De GeForce RTX 3080 heeft het in de toekomst misschien wel moeilijker

We gebruiken de Witcher 3 (Ultra preset) als voorbeeld voor de frameprogressie en de frametijden. De gelogde gegevens vertoonden geen negatieve afwijkingen. Enkele uitschieters zijn zichtbaar, maar ze hadden geen invloed op de vlotte gameplay in dit geval.

U krijgt echter alleen een merkbare prestatieboost als u de snellere GeForce RTX 3090 gebruikt. Alleen professionele grafische kaarten zoals de Quadro- of FirePro-modellen kunnen nog meer prestaties bieden

Wat betreft de uitstoot moet het voor elke gebruiker duidelijk zijn dat een high-end grafische kaart geen records zal vestigen op het gebied van energieverbruik. We zagen onlangs waar dit allemaal toe kan leiden toen we de MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Suprim X onder de loep namen. Het systeem met de MSI GeForce RTX Gaming X Trio haalt minder energie uit het stopcontact. Toch is het nog steeds iets minder dan 500 Watt dat ons testapparaat gemiddeld weergeeft tijdens het gamen. De tegenhanger van Asus bereikte zelfs iets meer dan 500 watt. Daarom is een krachtige voedingseenheid verplicht bij de aanschaf van deze grafische kaart. MSI's aanbeveling voor een soepele werking is een 750-watt voeding. Onze 1.000-watt voeding van Corsair had geen problemen en er waren geen crashes onder belasting.

MSI raakte de roos wat betreft het geluid met het geïnstalleerde koelconcept. In 2D-modus of onder lage belasting staan de ventilatoren stil, en daarom konden we de caseventilatoren alleen in stationair gebruik meten. Op een afstand van ongeveer 20 centimeter naast de case was het geluidsniveau 33 dB(A). Tijdens de stresstest was de grafische kaart rustig hoorbaar bij een gemeten 40 dB(A). Als je ook het vermogensdoel verhoogt, neemt het geluidsniveau iets toe, wat ook tot uiting komt in de omwentelingen van de ventilator. De drie axiale ventilatoren moeten bijna 200 omwentelingen per minuut meer ploegen om de grafische kaart van frisse lucht te voorzien. Bij normaal gebruik ligt het toerental van de ventilator tussen 1.800 en 1.900 omwentelingen per minuut.

Er zijn geen warmteproblemen met de MSI Geforce RTX Gaming X Trio. De maximale GPU-temperatuur was 68 °C (~154 °F) in het hogere vermogensdoel. De temperatuur daalt met één graad wanneer de grafische kaart met de fabrieksinstellingen wordt gebruikt.

MSI breidt haar bekende serie gaming grafische kaarten uit met de GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio. In termen van pure prestaties hoeft deze videokaart zich niet te verbergen achter de concurrentie en is hij gelijk aan een Asus GeForce RTX 3080 ROG Strix Gaming OC, die volgens het specificatieblad een nog hogere opvoersnelheid heeft. MSI past echter ook de kloksnelheid aan ten opzichte van het referentiemodel en verhoogt deze met 105 MHz tot 1.815 MHz. Dit wordt echter bijna altijd overtroffen onder belasting, wat ook te danken is aan de zeer goede koeling. Dankzij de zero-fan mode is de MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio zelfs in de 2D mode of onder lage belasting stil; zelfs onder belasting produceren de drie grote ventilatoren alleen een stil geluid, dat niet vervelend aanvoelt.

Met de AMD Radeon RX 6800 XTNvidia heeft nu een serieuze tegenstander in de high-end sector. De GeForce RTX 3080 is ongeveer even snel bij het vergelijken van prestaties. Alleen als er speciale functies zoals ray tracing worden gebruikt, bij voorkeur in combinatie met DLSS, kunnen de GeForce modellen terrein winnen. Het is op dit moment nog bijna onmogelijk om een GeForce RTX 3080 te kopen, omdat de beschikbaarheid sinds de release erg slecht is. Bovendien zijn de beschikbare modellen extreem duur. MSI geeft een MSRP aan van 769 Euro (~$943) voor de GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio. Echter, de werkelijke verkoopprijs, als een model beschikbaar is, is 1.000 euro (~$1.223) of zelfs hoger. Dit is een scenario dat waarschijnlijk nog een tijdje doorgaat, omdat niemand kan zeggen wanneer de situatie zal verlichten.
