Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM niet waargenomen

Ter vergelijking: 54 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 8568 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Als geheel heeft Q5 bijna alles te bieden wat we vragen van een Max-Q gaming notebook: eenvoudig onderhoud, een dunne behuizing, meerdere opties voor het beeldscherm, ruimte voor twee opslagapparaten, veel aansluitingen, Optimus en zelfs SIM kaart ondersteuning. Echter, bij een nadere blik blijkt dat het systeem nog ver verwijderd is van concurrerende Max-Q modellen zoals de Zephyrus.

Ten eerste verwachten we dat het koelsysteem veranderd wordt om te kunnen omgaan met Max-Q geluidsstandaarden. Ten tijde van het schrijven van dit rapport moeten gebruikers de snelheid terugschroeven naar 55% om een "echte" Max-Q beleving te krijgen. Anders produceert de Q5 evenveel geluid als andere notebooks met de GTX 1070 GPU. Immers, wat is het nut van een Max-Q notebooks als deze niet stiller is dan conventionele alternatieven?

Ten tweede zijn de kerntemperaturen warmer dan bij de Zephyrus wanneer we de ventilator beperkten tot 55%. Onderworpen aan dezelfde games zal de Asus notebook dus koeler blijven.

Tenslotte is de GTX 1070 Max-Q in de Q5 consistent langzamer dan dezelfde GPU in de Asus notebook. De langzamere kloksnelheid in combinatie met de hogere kerntemperaturen kunnen ertoe leiden dat hardcore gamers interesse verliezen in dit apparaat. Als je op zoek bent naar maximale prestaties met een GTX 1070 Max-Q GPU, is de Q5 helaas niet de juiste keuze. Echter, indien verbindingsmogelijkheden en algehele prestaties van belang zijn, is de dure Q5 wel een aantrekkelijk alternatief.

Het is duidelijk dan de Q5 en het koelsysteem niet volledig geoptimaliseerd zijn voor Max-Q, aangezien prestaties en kloksnelheden het slecht afleggen tegen de concurrentie. Toekomstige modellen met minder belastende GTX 1060 GPU's zouden in theorie beter moeten scoren. Afgezien daarvan heeft de Q5 de meeste configuraties en verbindingsmogelijkheden te bieden voor een dunne Max-Q notebook.
