Nu in Rose Gold. De update naar Kaby Lake voegt weinig toe aan de reeds uitstekende XPS-13-ervaring. Gebruikers zullen slechts erg kleine verbeteringen ondervinden op het vlak van prestaties en batterijduur in vergelijking met de Skylake-gebaseerde XPS 13.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd vergelijkbaar is met het gemiddelde (39.7 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM niet waargenomen

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9354 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Voor de meeste gebruikers is het belangrijkste aspect van de update van de Kaby Lake XPS 13 9360 het feit dat de Skylake XPS 13 9350 nu goedkoper zal worden. Het verschil in prestaties tussen deze bijna identieke notebooks is zo minimaal dat geïnteresseerden die de notebook willen gebruiken voor schoolwerk, browsen of multimedia weinig zinvolle verbeteringen zullen ondervinden van de update naar Kaby Lake. Sterker nog, sommige versies van de XPS 13 9350 met Iris Graphics kunnen de nieuwere Kaby Lake-gebaseerde modellen overtreffen op het vlak van grafische prestaties.

De XPS 13 is nog altijd één van de betere traditionele 13-inch-Ultrabooks voor wie geen nood heeft aan 360-graden-scharnieren of loskoppelbare schermen. Zijn compacte formaat en hoogwaardige design mogen niet onderschat worden en zijn superdunne schermomranding begint al overgenomen te worden in concurrerende notebooks zoals de Yoga 910, die binnenkort uitkomt. Er is weinig veranderd ten opzichte van de XPS 13, maar de serie zal niettemin hoogst competitief blijven in de komende feestperiode.

Kopers die bereid zijn om wat meer te betalen voor de Kaby Lake-gebaseerde XPS 13 zullen in ruil iets betere prestaties en batterijduur krijgen. Voor de rest biedt de oudere XPS 13 met Skylake een bijna identieke gebruikservaring voor minder geld.
