De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 17685 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Dell heeft zijn Alienware 17-serie op een slimme manier in twee zeer verschillende versies verdeeld: de Alienware m17 en Alienware Area-51m. Hoewel de dunnere m17 is ontdaan van functies in vergelijking met de originele 17-serie, heeft de grotere en volledig uitgeruste Area-51m de smaak te pakken. De eens omvangrijke 17-inch Alienware-serie kan nu een beroep doen op gamers die de voorkeur geven aan slankere en dunnere laptops, en ook aan gamers die zoveel mogelijk vermogen in een laptop zoeken.

Omdat de m17 in essentie een "Alienware 17 Lite" is, zullen fans van de originele serie het betreuren dat het een handvol klassieke Alienware-functies opoffert, allemaal met het doel om dunner en lichter te zijn. Het lukt nog steeds niet om zo dun of licht te zijn als de nieuwste modellen van MSIAsus of Acer en dus is de m17 meer een middenweg oplossing tussen ultradun en dik en zwaar. Aan de andere kant maakt de extra dikte de behuizing van de m17 steviger dan veel van zijn concurrenten, vooral met betrekking tot de beeldschermdeksel.

Onze grootste klachten hebben betrekking op kerntemperaturen, ventilatorruis en het toetsenbord. Het bereiken van kerntemperaturen van 98 C, zelfs wanneer de ventilatoren het hardst draaien, kan voor velen lastig te accepteren zijn. Ondertussen zou de soft-key feedback passender zijn geweest op een dunne Ultrabook dan op een serieuze gaming-laptop zoals de m17. De SteelSeries-toetsenborden op MSI- en Clevo-laptops bieden steviger feedback voor een strakkere game-ervaring. De afgeschuinde toetsenbordindeling op zowel de Area-51m als oudere Alienware 17 voelt ook beter voor gaming.

De Alienware m17 biedt enorme besparingen in gewicht en afmetingen ten opzichte van de Alienware 17. De nadelen zijn echter merkbaar, inclusief het weglaten van vele hardware functies en de overstap naar Max-Q GPU's. Gelukkig kunnen gebruikers die een meer klassieke Alienware-ervaring willen, voor de Area-51m kiezen, terwijl nieuwkomers in het merk de m17 zullen waarderen vanwege het sterke chassisontwerp in vergelijking met andere ultradunne alternatieven.
