Zo’n negentig procent van de gebruikers kan prima uit de voeten met de MacBook Air. De M4-chip is razendsnel, de batterij gaat lang mee en het gewicht maakt hem de perfecte laptop voor onderweg. Pas als je structureel zware taken uitvoert en merkt dat je tegen de grenzen aanloopt, is de stap naar de Pro gerechtvaardigd. Maar als je die stap maakt, krijg je er ook echt iets voor terug.

But after weeks of putting the MacBook Pro M5 Max through everything I could throw at it, I find myself with very little to hedge. This is the best laptop I have ever used. Not the best Apple laptop. Not the best professional laptop. The best laptop, full stop. The M5 Max is not just an incremental upgrade from M4 max, it raised the ceiling of what a portable machine is supposed to be capable of.

MacBook Pro with M5 Max Review: This Is Better Than Your Desktop

In the title of this review, I said that “this is better than your desktop,” which might be a bit of an overstatement for a small number of you. Yes, if you’ve got a top-end spec Mac Studio with the M3 Ultra, that statement is less definitive. But I know that folks who bought that machine probably didn’t all get it fully tricked out. A majority of people are using older desktop computers, and I’m certain a large number of you are using computers much older than the M3 Ultra. So I stand by that statement with just a slight clarification: for most of you, this computer is better than your desktop — a lot better. Apple often gets a lot of flak for what is characterized as a “walled garden” approach to both its hardware and software design. I can see how PC enthusiasts, especially, probably look at what Apple does with particular disdain, as they like being able to be in control of their machines. But on the opposite side of that coin, there are clearly benefits to Apple’s approach.

The Apple Macbook Pro M5 Max might be the fastest laptop of 2026 but with all of its other features, the Macbook Pro might also be the best laptop you can buy right now, even when it comes to battery life. The only thing you'll need to take into account is the price and availability. Apple's laptops aren't cheap but vs the best Windows laptops for productivity and creator workloads, the M5 Max is on a whole other level.

But those performance cores are where a lot of M5 Max’s multi-core speed is coming from. In terms of clock speed, the two performance core clusters behave more like efficiency cores, insofar as they maintain a fairly stable clock speed without significant performance throttling. But these cores are running between 4.3 and 4.2 GHz rather than 3 GHz; even without other architectural changes, that means that these performance cores are going to run things quite a bit faster than the efficiency cores do.

The M5 Max MacBook Pro is Apple’s fastest portable workstation and close to its fastest Mac. This laptop is for users who don’t want any compromises with performance–it delivers. While it provides incrementally faster CPU speed compared to the M4 Max, it does have a drastically faster SSD. For M2 or M3 Max MacBook Pro users, it’s definitely worth consideration. M4 Max owners could take a pass, but if you’re doing a lot of disk-intensive tasks, you will noticeably benefit from an upgrade. However, the rumors of the M6 MacBook Pro upgrade give buyers pause. The 20th anniversary laptop is rumored to feature an OLED touchscreen display, which would be an upgrade from the current mini LED technology, along with a new, slimmer design. If your needs aren’t pressing, it might be worth it to hold off until the end of the year.

The outside may be the same, but the internal architecture is a genuine technological shift, with the introduction of the Fusion die interconnect and the super core processor cores. The resulting performance is stunning, making this top-tier MacBook Pro a viable replacement for the Mac Studio (at least, until M5 inevitably comes to the Mac desktops). That giant 40-core GPU with built-in Neural Accelerators also makes it a powerhouse for both graphics and AI. The 27-hour battery life also surprised us, and the move to Thunderbolt 5 with individual port controllers and Wi-Fi 7 makes this the most future-proofed laptop in Apple's Mac lineup. But, let's be realistic: Even in its base model, this isn't a laptop for the masses.

Both do show a big drop in performance in low-power mode. But as long as you don't need to use them maxed out for a long period of time on your lap, since they can get pretty hot, and don't mind the heavy fan use under the same conditions, you really shouldn't need to drop into that mode. All told, this year's MacBook Pro 16s provide a great upgrade from almost any generation, but this may also be the last generation before the rumored update to OLED or touchscreen displays. I think the current screens have many of the benefits of OLED already -- primarily P3 gamut and sufficiently pure blacks -- along with likely even better brightness, but OLED would probably lighten the load. This screen still ranks at the top of the class, though, so it's up to you and your needs whether you want to wait.
