Pas als je structureel zware taken uitvoert en merkt dat je tegen de grenzen aanloopt, is de stap naar de Pro gerechtvaardigd. Maar als je die stap maakt, krijg je er ook echt iets voor terug.

I still believe the MacBook Air—regardless of the generation—is the better option. My view has only strengthened after reviewing the new M5 MacBook Air. It offers more processing power than you need for basic tasks like web browsing and light editing. At the same time, it can handle more demanding work, though it doesn’t match the performance of a MacBook Pro.

Many users will find it to be a nice upgrade over the Neo, but the Neo is still easily powerful enough for the vast majority of users that want something for basic productivity and web browsing. If you do want a little more from your laptop — but not everything the MacBook Pro can offer — then the MacBook Air is still an excellent laptop, and better than the majority of alternatives at its price point.

This is a review that, in all honesty, didn’t really need to be written. So little has changed, that you could have read last year’s review and most of it would hold today. Yes, the price has risen by £100, but with rocketing RAM and storage prices elsewhere in the industry it’s surprising that it hasn’t gone up by any more. And, yes, there’s a new chip that delivers a decent bump in performance, if not battery life. The question is, is the M5 MacBook Air still the laptop to beat for those who need the headroom of extra RAM and horsepower? Just about. It’s still dependable, fast, stable and reliable, comfortable to use and lasts as long as you need it to away from the mains.

Apple M5 MacBook Air Review: Same same, but faster

I ended up needing to pull out and rewire my whole dock setup with new Apple cables to get it to work, even though the existing setup should have worked fine. Even now, I still have issues with one of my displays not having the right resolution when connected to a Mac, but it works fine with Windows. Ultimately, macOS still has its flaws, but after spending more time with it, I’ve really come to appreciate it, especially for work. It feels like macOS does a better job than Windows of getting out of my way and letting me do what I need to do. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty darn good overall.

The MacBook Air with M5 feels like the kind of meal you get from a restaurant rightly confident in what it cooks. Yes, it’s got the same display I’ve been looking at for years, but it’s a darn good screen. Sure, it’s got the same design and features, with MagSafe charging and only dual USB-C ports, but enough accessories have ditched USB-A at this point. The only reasons to decide against the M5 MacBook Air are for the MacBook Neo’s value or the MacBook Pro’s ports and power. That makes the MacBook Air the Goldilocks pick, because it feels just right.

What’s even more ludicrous is that, as of now, Apple is not the most expensive laptop maker anymore. Many PCs with Intel’s Core Ultra Series 3 chips, at least the version with more GPU cores that can match or beat Apple’s M5, cost between $1,700 and $1,900.

M5 performance impresses, and the doubled 512GB storage and better wireless connectivity are nice bonuses. But as I said, it costs an extra $100 for most of the same features. Overall, the 15-inch MacBook Air M5 is a fantastic laptop for most folks, especially anyone looking for a premium notebook that’s under $1,500. If money is tight, you might want to wait for the inevitable holiday sale. But if you want a 15-inch laptop for the basics and more, you won’t go wrong with this super-sized MacBook Air.

This is one of my shortest reviews to date, so answering the question of who should buy the M5 MacBook Air is quite easy. If you are using an M4 or M3 generation MacBook, do not upgrade; the performance delta does not justify the cost unless your workflow becomes tangibly more complex, in which case, I think the upgrade would mainly stem from upgrading the RAM.

I don’t know if this laptop will be affected by that crisis, but I can’t blame you for being tempted to buy now.
