All told the Alienware X17 R1 is a great gaming package. There's plenty on offer here, including great specification and visual design, in a slim-yet-powerful package that does little wrong. We only have a few minor complaints about the setup - some of which could be combatted by just ensuring you make the right choices in terms of the spec options. That 512GB drive, for example, is far too small for most modern games. The Alienware X17 R1 continues the company's trend of releasing cracking gaming laptops. It's out of this world.

Alienware X15 and X17 2021 – slim performance laptops with quad-fans and powerful hardware

The X15 makes less sense, very little I would say. It’s heavier and larger than the competition without a significant CPU/GPU advantage, since most performance 15-inch ultraportables offer up to 100W RTX graphics these days. It also lacks the CherryMX keyboard available on the X17, so I’d reckon it would need to be aggressively priced for customers to pick it over something like a Blade 15. To wrap this up, I’ll advise you to wait for detailed reviews if you’re interested in any of these products. We’ll most likely not have them here on the site, since we’re not on Dell’s good graces for review samples, and I don’t think getting one of these just for review is worth it for us. I’d love to hear your thoughts on them in the comments section down below, though, if you end up getting any of these.

But it is still, not to put too fine a point on it, a big-ass laptop. It also has a rather robust price tag, starting at $2279 for the base model up to the nearly $4k of the model we tested. Is it worth it? That depends. Yes, you can pick up a decent gaming laptop with pretty good performance that will manage decent frame rates for less than half of the price of this review unit (see below for some suggestions). However, if you are the sort of person who feels every hit of the game and likes to dance between the bullets, then the x17 R2 is for you. The 360Hz display and computing power to back it up is a powerful combination. As long as you can afford it and put up with the noise, that is.

If unquestionable power is the name of the game, check out the MSI GE76 Raider as it has nearly identical specs and longer battery life. But if vibrant views, ultra comfortable keyboards and great audio is your bag, the Alienware x17 R2 is the gaming laptop for you.

The Alienware x17 R2 is a force to be reckoned with. Thanks to the significant power of the new Intel 12th Gen processor and Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti GPU, it’s putting most challengers to shame. It’s got some of the fastest, if not the fastest transfer speeds I’ve seen on a laptop period and it’s got that funky, out-of-this-world look that the legion of fans love. However, for $4,799, I was expecting it to win a few more rounds of our benchmarking against similarly specced systems. Plus, I really need Alienware to step its game up on the webcam front. If unquestionable power is the name of the game, check out the MSI GE76 Raider as it has nearly identical specs and longer battery life. But if vibrant views, ultra comfortable keyboards and great audio is your bag, the Alienware x17 R2 is the gaming laptop for you.

Alienware X17 R2 review: It's still out of this world

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The most striking feature of the Alienware X17 R1 was that it managed to squeeze some seriously powerful gaming hardware and a bright, colourful 17.3-inch display into a stylish and slim design. This year's R2 update doesn't mess with that winning formula - it's essentially a speed-bump that adopts 12th-gen Intel processors, and the latest Nvidia GPUs. It's not completely perfect - the HD display (1920 x 1080) provided with our review unit is disappointing given the X17's high price tag, even if it does offer a rock-steady 360Hz refresh rate. The limited battery life also means that this is a laptop that's not going to stray too far from the nearest power socket. Even so, the sleek design, strong performance and big, bright display of the X17 make it a tempting option for any serious gamer.

Some of those missing features are no surprise when you consider that the x17 isn’t a work notebook, but its sheer performance levels mean it’s still worthwhile if you need productivity power. And, alongside the muscular internals, it’s got plenty of ports, a great keyboard and a rock-solid exterior. There are inevitable downsides, though. The x17 is significantly heavier than both rivals, and they have better battery life and screens. The Asus offers its innovative Dial and better connectivity for £1,666 exc VAT, while the XPS 17 costs £2,332 exc VAT for a specification that approximately matches the x17. That said, the Alienware x17 R2 is worth the extra outlay if you want extreme performance inside a sturdy, port-packed laptop – just remember that you may get more looks than usual in the office.

Does the Alder-Lake x17 R2 displace the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 as our recommendation for the Ultimate Gaming Laptop? It does. The massive range of specification options, the stunning looks and the effortlessly cool and quiet performance make it impossible not to recommend and outweigh the terrible battery life and excessive adherence to the Alienware orthodoxy of putting all the data ports at the back. The cheapest models are best avoided – a Full HD 165Hz panel is a bit too low end for a machine of this class and the RTX 3060 only comes with 6GB of vRAM – so make sure you go for the 360Hz panel with either the RTX 3070 Ti or 3080 Ti GPU. Do that and you’ll have the finest large-screen gaming laptop on the market, albeit at a price.

Overall, the Alienware x17 R2 is the most powerful laptop we’ve ever tested at L&B Tech Reviews. By its very nature, it’s a record that’s certain to be broken in the future. But I don’t expect that to happen in 2022. However, the x17 R2 is also close to the price record, being one of the most expensive laptops we’ve tested to date. So you can afford to set expectations sky-high. If you’re a professional gamer needing to travel with your e-sports (or just very wealthy), it could be the tool you need. The huge computing power could potentially be interesting for graphic designers and other creative professionals, but they will miss a more high-resolution and accurate screen. But such a screen can of course be bought as an accessory. After all, there’s room for as many as three external monitors.

Alienware: Alienware werd in 1996 opgericht in de VS. Het Europese hoofdkantoor is gevestigd in Ierland. Alienware maakt sinds 2006 deel uit van de Dell Group. Het productassortiment richt zich voornamelijk op gaming laptops en desktops, die ontwikkeld en geproduceerd worden door Dell. Het handelsmerk is een licht futuristisch ontwerp met een Alien als logo. Daarnaast worden er werkstations voor particulieren en bedrijven verkocht.

Zoals bij elk merk zijn er ook bij Alienware enkele punten van kritiek. Sommige klanten hebben geklaagd over de hoge prijzen van de producten, terwijl anderen kritiek hadden op de kwaliteit van de klantenservice. Er zijn ook enkele meldingen geweest van problemen met de betrouwbaarheid en duurzaamheid van sommige Alienware-producten. Veel klanten hebben echter ook positieve ervaringen met het merk en waarderen de krachtige spelcomputers.

Deze grafische kaarten zouden de meeste moderne spellen op een hoge resolutie en hoge details moeten kunnen draaien (enkele uitzonderingen zijn mogelijk).
