Samsung zal het vooral hebben over dat het toestel iets goedkoper is geworden dan haar voorganger, maar bezuinigen is het echte onderwerp in deze review. Samsung heeft op vrijwel alle fronten haar best gedaan om een top beleving te leveren en toch overal te beknibbelen op de uitgaven. Dat is een keuze. Het zorgt er wel voor dat gamers beter uit kunnen wijken naar Chinese smartphones. Zelfs de modellen van vorig jaar. Dat liefhebbers van gebogen displays meer moeten uitgeven, of moeten uitwijken naar de Chinezen. Dat liefhebbers van goede draadloze audio moeten uitwijken naar de Chinezen. Foto en videoliefhebbers worden wel goed verwend, zolang het niet donker wordt. Eigenlijk hebben de bezuinigingen er voor gezorgd dat Samsung wel opnieuw een toptoestel oplevert, maar nergens echt nog in uitblinkt met deze release.

Voor een prijs van 849 euro zal je niet snel een beter toestel vinden. De prestaties zijn goed, foto-kwaliteit is top en het toestel is erg fijn in gebruik. De Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is het betere toestel van de twee, maar is het prijsverschil van ruim 400 euro niet waard. In potentie zijn de camera’s van het duurdere toestel beter, maar die worden op dit moment nog niet ten volle benut.

De Samsung Galaxy S21 laat zien dat een high-end smartphone geen duizend euro of meer hoeft te kosten. Weliswaar is hij met 849 euro nog steeds stevig aan de prijs, je krijgt er wel veel voor terug. De S21 heeft een fraai ontwerp, een fantastisch scherm, goede specificaties en krijgt updates tot 2025. Het toestel is een betrouwbare keuze en extra interessant als je een handzame smartphone zoekt. Voor wie een grotere en nog betere telefoon wilt, biedt Samsung de Galaxy S21 Ultra aan. Die is met 1249 euro wel een stuk duurder en daarom bedoeld voor een niché. Vanwege zijn prijs-kwaliteitsverhouding is de S21 de juiste keuze voor het grote publiek.

De Samsung Galaxy S21 is zoals we in de inleiding al aangaven een wat vreemde telefoon. En dat heeft allemaal met de Galaxy S20 FE te maken. Die volgde een half jaar na de S20 omdat die niet goed verkocht. De S20 FE bracht high-end functies naar een laag prijspunt. Met succes. Het toestel verkocht goed, mede door z'n uitstekende prijs/kwaliteitsverhouding. En dat maakte het alleen nog maar lastiger voor toekomstige S-modellen.

De Samsung Galaxy S21 is een heerlijke smartphone. Ik kan niet heel veel anders zeggen dan dat. Ik ben de afgelopen week erg blij geweest met de telefoon en heb genoten van een aantal zaken. Alleen heb ik dit jaar, op het ontwerp na, niet echt het gevoel dat ik een gloednieuwe smartphone in mijn zak heb. Ik begrijp dat de gemiddelde consument die ervaring misschien niet heeft, maar het zorgt er wel voor dat ik mezelf de vraag stel of dit wel zo’n goeie deal is. Want voor minder geld kun je net zo goed een Samsung Galaxy S20 aanschaffen.

The Galaxy S21 Fan Edition is definitely a confusing phone. It’s almost identical to the base model Galaxy S21, except it has cheaper materials and one extra generation of OS updates (so it should receive Android 13, 14, and 15, while the Galaxy S21 will stop at 14). The Galaxy S21 was $799.99 at launch, but it dropped to $699 on more than one occasion, while the Galaxy S21 Fan Edition starts at $699.99. Samsung might drop the price of the FE over the next few months to make the phone more of a deal, but the company hasn’t done anything yet. The entire Galaxy S21 family is starting to go out of stock at retailers, which indicates Samsung might sell the Galaxy S21 FE as the only available Galaxy S21 model from this point on. If that’s true, cross-shopping the two phones is a bit of a pointless exercise, unless you’re deciding between a new Galaxy S21 FE and a used/refurbished Galaxy S21. In summary: if you want a new phone, your only choice between the two will probably be the Galaxy S21 FE. I’d still recommend waiting for a sale if you can, though

Sure, a plastic back isn’t ideal on a flagship phone but I soon got used to the polycarbonate, and the overall design of the Galaxy S21 is lovely, as well as more practical than the S20. By making what I feel was the right choice when it came to removing features, the Galaxy S21 still offers the latest flagship chips, a fantastic display and powerful cameras in a refined smartphone at a competitive price; one that should worry the iPhone 12. This is the "cheapest" and "smallest" of the Samsung flagship family, the Galaxy S21 — not an Ultra, not a Plus. But it’s still not a cheap phone by no means — it’ll set you back $800 at the base storage tier. Is it… worth it? It definitely looks great and packs the latest Sammy hardware — a 120Hz screen and a Snapdragon 888 (or Exynos 2100) processor. It’s snappy and fun to use, and its camera is pretty great as well. Why go for the Galaxy S21 at all? Well, it definitely looks a lot more sophisticated than the S20 FE and has a much better camera. And it comes in a smaller package, if a compact phone is what you are exclusively after. There’s a market for it, but if you find yourself scoffing at that $800 price-tag, definitely check out the Galaxy S20 FE instead. On the other hand, if money is not a big issue, but the plastic back is — Samsung is basically pressuring you into going for the larger Galaxy S21+, which I think is a low-blow tactic.

With the Galaxy S21, it’s clear that Samsung is OK with alienating its die-hard fans in the hopes that it will entice more mainstream users. The price, features, and design of the Galaxy S21 all scream “Honda” rather than “Mercedes.” That might be a tough pill to swallow for Galaxy S lovers, but it’s the right move to make during a global pandemic. Ultimately, that’s the choice you have with this phone and the Galaxy S21 family in general. Do you want stylish, fast, and economical, or do you want powerful, luxurious, and expensive? This phone fits very firmly in the first category. In the end, the Galaxy S21 is great at being what it is. There are some notable flaws but the price more than makes up for them.

Like its Exynos twin, it comes with a number of attractive features, including a triple-camera setup. Our team of battery experts recently put it through our DXOMARK testing protocol; what follows is a summary of the results. The Samsung Galaxy S21 5G (Snapdragon) racks up an above-average overall score in its segment, beating its Exynos sibling and doing largely better than the two competitor devices in this review, the Apple iPhone 12 mini and the Google Pixel 5, due primarily to better performance in our autonomy tests. The table below shows the battery capacity, charger, display type and resolution, and processor specifications for the Snapdragon version of the S21 5G and for the Apple and Google devices. The Samsung S21 5G (Snapdragon) achieves decent autonomy overall, but it would have been nice to pair that with faster charging, which is quite common at this price range.

In fact, the Galaxy S21 5G couldn’t have come at a better time: with many sectors rebounding after a difficult 16 months and consumers finally allowed to enjoy themselves, investing in a new premium smartphone is a tempting way to start the post-lockdown era. There might be plenty of similar options available, starting with the more budget-conscious Galaxy A52 5G at £399, but if you’re looking for a treat, the Galaxy S21 5G might just be it. Samsung’s Galaxy S21 5G is the least expensive of the company’s current high-end S21 series. Here we examine the version based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chipset, which is sold in the US and China (we’ve previously reviewed the global version, powered by Samsung’s own Exynos chip). The Samsung Galaxy S21 5G (Snapdragon) features a 120 Hz 6.2-inch AMOLED screen with a hole punch for the selfie camera. It has 8 GB of memory with either 128 or 256 GB of storage. There are three cameras on the back; the main wide and ultra-wide modules have 12 MP sensors. The tele camera starts quite wide (76˚ field of view) but uses its 64 MP sensor to retain detail while zooming in, with the output binned down to 12 MP.

And I just can't get over the value of the S21, even at full MSRP. I know, it's a little crazy thinking of an $800 phone as being a good value, and the OnePlus 9 is $70 cheaper, but there's more to it than just comparing a pair of prices. Samsung guarantees a whole extra year with its update policy. Samsung's track record for updating its phones from the last couple of years also beats OnePlus's very easily (and I wish it weren't so), and that means the Galaxy S21 will last you longer between upgrades. Amortize that cost over the expected lifetime and you're saving quite a bit. We've been known to adjust our review scores over time (usually down), but as I've used more smartphones this year, my opinion of the Galaxy S21 has only improved. So, we're increasing our review score by half a point to 9/10 and giving the Galaxy S21 a much-deserved Editors' Choice Most Wanted award.

Since it was a hands-on before the official launch, we had limited time and space to explore the Galaxy S21 series with. We used the time to better understand Director's View, a new feature joining Samsung's already pro-grade series of cameras and camera functionalities. In a nutshell, Director's View is a unique live-editing feature for video recording. It has three main components. There's a key video feed that takes up most of the recording and a picture-in-picture feed of the opposing, user-facing camera. Three other video feeds on the right allow the user to preview the look and feel coming from Samsung's other rear lenses running in real-time (called Live Thumbnail). Tapping on any of the three feeds would swap the main feed out for the other. In a completed recording, you actually do not see any of previews from other lenses - only the picture-in-picture feed and the main, world-facing footage remains.

With Samsung removing as much from this phone as it adds, I was prepared to be let down by the Galaxy S21. But I needn’t have worried. Sure, a plastic back isn’t ideal on a flagship phone but I soon got used to the polycarbonate, and the overall design of the Galaxy S21 is lovely, as well as more practical than the S20. The lack of any hardware upgrades for the cameras was a little disappointing, but then they still produce flagship-grade results and have a huge amount of features and tools to really dig into. The only fly in the ointment, is the Galaxy S20. If you already have an S20 then I don’t think you’ll benefit from an upgrade. I feel Samsung knows this and the S21 is more for people with older Galaxy phones or looking to move to their next phone. If you're in such a position, then I really suggest you consider the Galaxy S21 as you won’t be disappointed.
