De hoogtepunten van Samsung's nieuwe tablet zijn de ingetogen, maar goed ontworpen dunne behuizing en het nieuwe 4:3 Super-AMOLED scherm. Het scherm kan prima concurreren met zijn voorganger en overtuigt ons met een geweldige contrast ratio, geschiktheid voor gebruik buitenshuis en een levendige, accurate kleurweergave. De uitgebreide lijst van features met AC Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, LTE Cat. 6 en zelfs een vingerafdruklezer mag ook genoemd worden. Het is wel jammer dat NFC-ondersteuning ontbreekt. Een ander voordeel is dat je via de ingebouwde hands-free luidspreker of een headset kunt telefoneren. Het interne opslaggeheugen van 32 GB kan met een microSD-kaart worden uitgebreid (tot 128 GB).

Opnieuw zit aan de achterzijde een 8 MP camera, maar deze kan nu ook video in QHD opnemen en dat levert zeer scherpe beelden op. De fotokwaliteit is, aan de andere kant, niet veel beter ten opzichte van zijn voorganger: de kwaliteit is goed voor een tablet, maar kan niet concurreren met wat zeer goede smartphones leveren. Het is jammer dat op het nieuwe model de led-flitser achterwege is gelaten.

De batterijduur is korter en de resultaten van ons testmodel - afhankelijk van het gebruiksscenario - zijn op zijn hoogst van doorsnee niveau. Een serieuzer probleem is Samsung's keuze om de SoC bij langdurige belasting omlaag te klokken. Een 40% daling in prestaties is ongewoon en door de gematigde temperaturen lijkt het onnodig. Op dit punt verliest de tablet punten.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 is een zeer aantrekkelijke, goed ontworpen tablet die veel gebruikers zal aanspreken door zijn compacte afmetingen, lage gewicht en geweldige beeldscherm. Je moet dan wel kunnen leven met een middelmatige batterijduur en lagere prestaties bij langdurige belasting.
