Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 355 Hz

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 355 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) .

De frequentie van 355 Hz is relatief hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen. Er zijn echter rapporten die beweren dat sommige mensen toch flickering met 500 Hz en hoger kunnen waarnemen: opgelet dus.

Ter vergelijking: 50 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 18037 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde snelle responstijden in onze tests en zou geschikt moeten zijn voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 7 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (24.6 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Motorola’s Edge is een opvallend en fraai mid-range toestel. Het randloze scherm is misschien niet het eerste in zijn soort - sterker nog, de Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge was vier jaar eerder - maar de boven- en onderkant van de Edge zijn nog smaller en de voorkant van het toestel is bijna een en al scherm.

Dat brengt ons bij zijn belangrijkste tekortkoming: touchscreen-bruikbaarheid. Je moet je grip rond de randen aanpassen om te voorkomen dat er per ongeluk aanrakingen worden geregistreerd.

De luidspreker- en gesprekskwaliteit waren ook op zijn best middelmatig en we hadden meer 'oomph' gewenst. Als je high-end camerakwaliteit verwacht, zal je teleurgesteld zijn vanwege het subtiele, maar merkbare gebrek aan focus. Voor de prijs zijn de camera's echter in orde.

Dingen die we leuk vonden, zijn de pure versie van Android, de snelle Wi-Fi-modem van de Edge, de redelijk nauwkeurige GPS-modem en de degelijke prestaties, die volstaan voor een vlotte gaming-ervaring met gemiddelde instellingen. De 3,5-mm-hoofdtelefoonaansluiting is ook een zeer welkome bonus waar veel gebruikers zich over zullen verheugen. Als je op zoek bent naar een relatief betaalbare 5G-smartphone, is de Motorola Edge wellicht het juiste toestel.

De Motorola Edge is een mooie 5G-smartphone met veel voordelen en een aantal kleine nadelen.

Een dure Motorola-smartphone heeft lang op zich laten wachten, maar het het team heeft fantastisch werk geleverd en bewezen dat ze het nog steeds aankunnen. De Motorola Edge is zeker niet onberispelijk, maar als je het ontwerp aantrekkelijk en spannend vindt, is de Edge een chique 5G-smartphone.
