Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 250 Hz ≤ 99 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 250 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 99 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 250 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Ter vergelijking: 53 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 8929 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 23 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (25.6 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Het scherm vertoonde snelle responstijden in onze tests en zou geschikt moeten zijn voor games.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (41 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Als je niet van notches houdt kan je hier beter stoppen met lezen. De Google Pixel 3 XL heeft een gigantische notch, wat hem een stap achter zijn concurrenten met subtielere (lees: kleinere) notches plaatst. Sommige alternatieven beschikken over vingerafdruklezers achter het scherm of zelfs een frontcamera die uitschuifbaar is om hun schermoppervlakte te maximaliseren.

De hoofdcamera van de Google Pixel 3 XL schiet sublieme foto's, maar zijn videocapaciteiten zijn ietwat verouderd. Daarnaast zijn de twee camera's aan de voorkant wel nuttig, maar alleen als je vaak selfies neemt. De AR en Digital Wellbeing features zijn nieuwigheden, maar bieden functionaliteiten die je reeds kon krijgen met bestaande apps, waardoor je ze moeilijk baanbrekend kan noemen.

De Google Pixel 3 XL is voor zijn volle prijs te duur om ons te overtuigen van zijn talrijke, uitstekende features. Het toestel heeft gewoon niets te bieden waarmee het zicht echt kan onderscheiden van de rest.

Wat overblijft van de Google Pixel 3 XL is een stijlvolle, goedgebouwde smartphone die veel goed doet en weinig slecht. Helaas doet de smartphone niets waarmee het verschil wordt gemaakt met de concurrentie in een reeds verzadigde markt. Google is optimistisch in het bepalen van zijn prijs van 1000 euro voor de versie met 128 GB. We kunnen de Pixel 3 XL wel aanbevelen als je hem voor minder dan deze winkelprijs kan kopen, aangezien het een uitstekende smartphone is met een camera en luidsprekers van eerste klasse.
