Tijd voor iets lichters. Iedereen die een smartphone met een fysiek toetsenbord waardeert, maar niet op zoek is naar een duur apparaat, zou de BlackBerry KEY2 LE moeten overwegen. De goedkopere versie van de KEY2 heeft degelijke hardware voor zijn prijs, maar is het een geschikt apparaat voor de zakenwereld?

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 2358 Hz ≤ 15 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 2358 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 15 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 2358 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9524 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 18 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (25.3 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Immers, niet iedereen kan of wil meer dan $600 betalen voor een smartphone. Kortom, TCL heeft een afgeslankte versie van de KEY2 gecreëerd zonder daarbij op belangrijke gebieden veel op te offeren. Het prestatieverschil tussen de KEY2 LE en de KEY2 is nauwelijks merkbaar tenzij van beiden het uiterste wordt gevergd, terwijl beide apparaten een vergelijkbare batterijlevensduur hebben ondanks dat de Key2 LE een 500 mAh kleinere batterij heeft. Bovendien vermoeden we dat de zwakkere camera van de KEY2 LE zakelijke klanten niet zal beïnvloeden. Het enige praktische compromis is het gebrek aan toetsenbordaanrakingsgebaren, wat nuttig bleek te zijn tijdens onze test van de KEY2.

Een stapje terug, maar op de juiste plaatsen. De BlackBerry KEY2 LE is een degelijke zakelijke smartphone met een fysiek toetsenbord die de meeste KEY2-functies behoudt.

Het is echter frustrerend dat ons testapparaat drie maanden oude Android-beveiligingspatches heeft wanneer het apparaat op de markt wordt gebracht als veiliger dan andere Android-smartphones. TCL levert ook veel vooraf geïnstalleerde apps, waardoor sommige mensen de voorkeur geven aan een kalere Android-ervaring. Het beeldscherm is ook teleurstellend, maar de GPS-nauwkeurigheid, bouwkwaliteit en prestaties zijn indrukwekkend voor een smartphone voor minder dan $500.

Over het algemeen zouden we de KEY2 LE aanbevelen aan degenen die een smartphone met een fysiek toetsenbord willen, maar een beperkt budget hebben. Het apparaat heeft een betere prijs-kwaliteitverhouding dan zijn duurdere broer, maar de KEY2 is de betere van de twee voor slechts $150 meer (op het moment van schrijven).
