Exceptionele gaming-notebook. De hardware van de Zephyrus S GX701GXR kan alle huidige games soepel draaien op het matte 300 Hz IPS-beeldscherm. De laptop biedt echter in zeer beperkte mate uitbreidings- of upgrademogelijkheden.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM niet waargenomen

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 13560 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Met de Zephyrus S GX701GXR levert Asus een compacte 17,3-inch gaminglaptop die alle huidige games soepel op het matte Full HD-beeldscherm kan draaien dankzij de Core i7-9750H-processor en de GeForce RTX 2080 Max Q GPU. De warmte- en geluidsproductie valt gelukkig mee. De batterijlevensduur is niet bijzonder, maar kan worden verhoogd door de geïntegreerde GPU te activeren.

Het 300 Hz IPS-scherm scoort punten met korte responstijden, stabiele kijkhoeken, een goed contrast, een X-Rite Pantone-certificering en geweldige kleurreproductie.

De maximale helderheid van het scherm is aan de lage kant. Een laptop in deze prijsklasse zou in dit opzicht meer moeten bieden.

Upgrade-opties zijn zeer beperkt. Er kan slechts één opslagmedium (M.2 SSD) worden geïnstalleerd; er is geen ruimte voor een 2,5-inch harde schijf. Bovendien heeft de computer slechts één geheugenslot (16 GB RAM gesoldeerd). Meer dan de geïnstalleerde 32 GB geheugen wordt niet ondersteund. Bovendien blijkt het openen van de behuizing complexer dan bij veel concurrenten.

 

Er is ook ruimte voor verbetering op het gebied van aansluitingen. Asus rust de laptop niet uit met een Thunderbolt 3-poort, maar alleen met twee USB Type-C 3.1-poorten (1x Gen 1, 1x Gen 2). Het apparaat biedt ook geen geheugenkaartlezer of Ethernet-poort. Gebruikers die meer verwachten op het gebied van upgrade- of onderhoudsmogelijkheden of het aanbod van poorten, moeten eens naar de concurrentie kijken - bijvoorbeeld de Razer Blade Pro 17 of de Gigabyte Aero 17 XA.
