Caffeïne-boost. De Asus GL703GE biedt meer processor-performance dan ooit dankzij Intel's nieuwe Core i7-8750H-CPU. De Coffee Lake-chip zorgt voor een aanzienlijke versnelling van taken die afhangen van de processor en het 120-Hz-scherm werd ook verbeterd. Toch is het toestel moeilijk aan te bevelen omwille van zijn prijs.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde snelle responstijden in onze tests en zou geschikt moeten zijn voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 7 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (25 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.9 (minimum) tot 636 (maximum) ms. » 8 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (39.8 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 26040 Hz ≤ 25 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 26040 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 25 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 26040 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9377 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

De Asus GL703GE is in wezen een verfijning van Asus' 17-inch ROG Strix-serie. De variant met GTX 1050 Ti maakt heel wat juiste keuzes zonder veel steken te laten vallen. Het hoogtepunt is zonder enige twijfel de Intel Core i7-8750H. De nieuwe hexa-core-CPU zal dit jaar zeker zijn weg vinden naar de meeste gaming-notebooks. Hoewel de GL703GE een geslaagde demonstratie geeft van de capaciteiten van de nieuwe processor, is er nog ruimte voor verbetering. Er zijn aanzienlijke verschillen met de quad-core i7-7700HQ, maar de GL703GE loopt niettemin achter op andere toestellen met een 8750H. Toch biedt Coffee Lake de vernieuwing waar Intel's 45-Watt-CPU's jaren op hebben moeten wachten en zullen de nieuwe processors op heel wat enthousiasme kunnen rekenen van gamers en andere performance-enthousiastelingen.

Hoewel de GeForce GTX 1050 Ti niet sterk genoeg is om de 8750H volledig tot zijn recht te doen komen, vindt de GPU een geslaagd evenwicht tussen performance en efficiëntie. Het 120-Hz-scherm zorgt voor een aantrekkelijk toestel dat gericht is op competitieve gamers. Games worden scherp en vlot weergegeven en een aantal competitieve games kunnen met hun 100+ fps goed gebruik maken van de hogere refresh-snelheid. Een GTX 1060 zou betere resultaten hebben opgeleverd, maar met een hogere warmteontwikkeling en een hoger energieverbruik. Al bij al is het toestel een geslaagd totaalpakket.

De nieuwe Core i7-8750H van Intel is een groot pluspunt voor processor-intensieve taken. Hoewel de CPU wordt voorgesteld als het grote verkoopargument, is de GTX 1050 Ti niet echt de GPU die de 8750H verdient. Tenzij je de extra CPU-performance nodig hebt voor processor-intensief werk, zijn er weinig redenen om te upgraden. Voor zijn winkelprijs van USD $1250, biedt de GL703GE relatief weinig waar voor het geld; de GPU lijkt een slecht gekozen metgezel voor de processor. De GL703VM, die een GTX 1060 met een Core i7-7700HQ combineert, biedt voor $100 meer misschien wel een betere prijs/prestaties-verhouding.
