Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 15 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (26.6 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (42.6 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 119000 Hz99 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 119000 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 99 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 119000 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 56 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 8105 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

We blijven achter met een gemengde indruk: enerzijds is de Asus ROG Strix GL703VD een hoogwaardige en uiterst slanke 17-inch gaming-notebook dat degelijk presteert, prima ergonomie biedt en uitgerust is met een erg helder en redelijk nauwkeurig Full-HD-scherm. De combinatie van primaire SSD en harde schijf voor opslag verzekert uitstekende prestaties, terwijl de batterijduur die van sommige Ultrabooks benadert.

Er zijn ook een aantal grote minpunten: voor een notebook met een min of meer instap-GPU is de GL703VD eenvoudigweg te luidruchtig en wordt hij te warm - tenminste onder extreme belasting; de temperaturen blijven een stuk lager tijdens het gamen. Met een maximum van 53 dB en temperaturen van bijna 70°C komt de laptop in de buurt van een aantal gaming-giganten uitgerust met desktop-CPU's en absolute toppers van grafische kaarten. We hopen dan ook dat Asus de koeling volledig herziet voor de nieuwe SCAR- en Hero-edities uitgerust met een krachtigere GTX 1060 GPU.

Zoals het er nu voor staat, zien we helaas geen goede reden om de Strix GL703VD boven de talrijke alternatieven met GTX 1050 te verkiezen.

Gebruikers die op zoek zijn naar een mobiele en snellere (én dunne/liche) 17.3-inch-notebook, kunnen in de plaats een kijkje nemen bij de Strix GL702-serie. Zelfs wanneer uitgerust met een GTX 1070 blijft de GL702 aanzienlijk koeler en stiller in gebruik. Een versie met GeForce GTX 1070, i7-7700HQ, 12GB RAM en 128 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD is op het moment van schrijven verkrijgbaar voor slechts $200 meer dan ons toestel.
