Op zoek naar perfectie. We nemen de Asus FX553VD onder de loep en trachten te achterhalen of de FX553 in staat is om Asus' motto "in search of incredible" waar te maken. Gezien het feit dat zijn zustermodel is uitgerust met een GTX 1060 voor bijna dezelfde prijs, rest de vraag of de notebook genoeg positieve argumenten heeft om de koper te overhalen.

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 53 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 17900 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz waargenomen.

De Asus FX553 is eigenlijk een multimedia-notebook van de hogere middenklasse, maar hij vervult ook de rol van instap-gaming-toestel. De FX553 brengt het er in het scoresysteem beter vanaf als multimedia-notebook, wat ook de reden is dat we hem als lid van deze categorie beoordelen. In de multimedia-categorie krijgt het toestel als echt all-rounder 2 extra punten. Wat ruwe prestaties betreft vertoont de laptop nauwelijks zwaktes; de geïntegreerde hardware presteert naar behoren. Alle andere onderdelen zijn echter op zijn best middelmatig te noemen.

Ons belangrijkste punten van kritiek zijn voor de behuizing met zijn onstabiel scherm- en toetsenbordgedeelte, het donkere en contrastarme scherm en de ongunstige warmteverdeling in het linkse gedeelte van de laptop.

Anderzijds kan je weinig verkeerd doen door voor de FX553 te kiezen. Je krijgt een betaalbare gaming- en multimdia-laptop die alle huidige games vlot kan spelen en tegelijk niet te warm of luid wordt. Natuurlijk kan je altijd de afweging maken of je een 'echte' gaming-machine nodig hebt, in welk geval de slechts iets duurdere FX502 met GTX 1060 een mooi alternatief is. Dit toestel is bijna twee keer zo snel in gaming, maar helaas ook luider en warmer. Er moet dus steeds en afweging gemaakt worden tussen enerzijds prestaties en anderzijds temperatuur/volume/gewicht. 

De Asus FX553VD is a een krachtige, visueel aantrekkelijke, maar op technisch vlak weinig indrukwekkende alleskunner.

In vergelijking met de vergelijkbaar uitgeruste concurrentie valt de FX553 in de middenmoot. Het toestel is het best te vergelijking met de MSI GL62M; de andere toestellen waarmee we hem vergeleken (zie volledig testrapport) zijn iets beter. Voor de hardware die je krijgt, lijkt de prijs van ongeveer 1100 euro (~$1177) wat aan de hoge kant. De concurrenten kosten in sommige gevallen iets minder dan 1000 euro (~$1070) en brengen het er helemaal niet slechter vanaf. Zelfs de FX502 van dezelfde fabrikant kost slechts ongeveer 100 tot 200 euro (~$107 tot $214) meer en is uitgerust met 16 GB RAM en een GTX 1060.

Met wat we hier in handen hebben, lijkt de "search for the incredible" een moeilijke opdracht. Het design en het stroomverbruik komen het dichtste in de buurt; alle andere resultaten zijn eerder middelmatig. Het doelpubliek zal daarom vooral bestaan uit mensen die een relatief krachtige multimedia-notebook wensen, maar niet al te veel geven om goede bouwkwaliteit en details. De Asus FX553 is niet te duur, te zwaar, te luid of te warm. Het is een snel, maar niet zuiver high-end toestel.
