Meer dan alleen meer VRAM! Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB is de zoveelste high-end grafische kaart die de GeForce RTX 3080 moet opvolgen. Het is Nvidia's antwoord op herhaalde verzoeken om meer VRAM, en we nemen een kijkje naar deze nieuwste RTX incarnatie met nu 12 GB VRAM door een model gemaakt door KFA2 te reviewen.

De RTX 3000-serie van Nvidia omvat grafische kaarten voor bijna het hele spelspectrum, van middenklasse tot high-end. Er worden regelmatig nieuwe modellen toegevoegd, zoals bijvoorbeeld de GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB. Na de RTX 3080's initiële release terug in september van 2020 riepen velen om meer VRAM, aangezien de originele kaart werd geleverd met slechts 10 GB. Hoewel dit perfect in orde was voor de meeste games op dat moment maakten veel gamers zich zorgen over de toekomstige mogelijkheden van hun GPU met nog uit te brengen toekomstige games.

De GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB is Nvidia's antwoord op deze herhaalde verzoeken om meer VRAM, want hij wordt geleverd met 2 GB meer dan de originele kaart. Hij beschikt ook over een bredere geheugenbusinterface, zonder welke hij in plaats daarvan maar liefst 20 GB RAM zou moeten hebben. Dit model verscheen regelmatig in de geruchtenmolen, maar is tot op heden nog niet uitgekomen.

Voor deze review ontvingen we een GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB van KFA2. Dit specifieke model is gebaseerd op de GA102 chip met een totaal van 8.960 shaders, wat de prestaties zou moeten verbeteren en helpen om de kloof met de Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti te dichten of op zijn minst te verkleinen. Bovendien wordt de KFA2 GeForce RTX 3080 SG 12 GB geleverd met een nogal volumineuze koeler, ontworpen om de 350 W aan warmte van de kaart betrouwbaar en snel af te voeren. Houd er rekening mee dat het ontwerp met drie sleuven veel ruimte in beslag neemt en misschien niet in uw kast past. De fraaie RGB-verlichting helpt de drie 92 mm ventilatoren en de "What's Your Game"-slogan die op de kaart is afgedrukt, te verlichten en te accentueren.

De prijzen voor deze kaart beginnen rond de 970 euro in Europa en rond de 1.200 dollar in de Verenigde Staten. Gezien de huidige problemen met de toeleveringsketen, vinden we dit een acceptabele prijs voor een high-end grafische kaart. De prijzen zijn de laatste weken ook licht gedaald, wat een veelbelovend teken is.

De boost kloksnelheden van onze KFA2 GeForce RTX 3080 SG 12 GB review unit lagen slechts iets boven Nvidia's specificaties. We moeten echter toevoegen dat de gespecificeerde 1.740 MHz boost consequent werd overtroffen in bijna elke test die we uitvoerden. Dit model ondersteunt een vermogenstoename van maximaal negen procent, wat resulteert in een totaal maximaal energieverbruik van 380 W.

Synthetische benchmarks

In onze synthetische benchmarks vinden we de KFA2 GeForce RTX 3080 SG 12 GB precies waar we dachten dat we zouden vinden: tussen de NVIDIA NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GeForce RTX 3080 en de NVIDIA NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 GeForce RTX 3090. Houd in gedachten dat deze specifieke prestatiewinst te danken is aan de extra shader units van de kaart en minder aan het extra VRAM. De Witcher 3 beeldsnelheden in de tijd (Ultra)

Onze gaming benchmarks werden over het algemeen zeer goed afgerond zonder enige problemen. Alle gebenchmarkte games kunnen vloeiend worden genoten in 2160p en maximale details, waarbij slechts enkele games er niet in slaagden een gemiddelde van 60 FPS te halen. Vergeleken met de Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 presteerde deze nieuwe 12 GB kaart tussen de 10 en 15 % sneller, wat betekent dat de KFA2 RTX 3080 SG 12 GB niet alleen sneller is dan de AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT maar ook bijna op slagafstand van AMD's Radeon RX 6900 XT.

Dankzij de zeer hoge prestaties is de KFA2 GeForce RTX 3080 SG 12 GB praktisch gemaakt voor hoge-resolutie gaming in hoge details. Als je alleen in 1080p speelt, is een GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB misschien niet de juiste keuze voor jou. Als je echter wilt dat je GPU vele jaren meegaat, zou dit top-of-the-line model dat misschien wel kunnen zijn. De RTX 3080 profiteert absoluut enorm van de toegang tot 12 GB VRAM, en hij had vanaf het begin zo uitgebracht moeten worden. Desondanks bieden zijn concurrenten meer met maximaal 16 GB VRAM, en Nvidia's eigen onbetaalbaar dure RTX 3090 beschikt over maximaal 24 GB VRAM. Dit resulteert echter niet noodzakelijk in hogere prestaties, zoals hieronder te zien is. Hoewel de RTX 3090 iets sneller presteerde dan ons RTX 3080 12 GB review model, rechtvaardigen de verschillen tussen de twee niet de hogere prijs van de RTX 3090.

12 GB VRAM zijn een goed compromis en lang niet zo beperkend als eerdere modellen. In feite zijn ze meer dan genoeg, zoals onze The Witcher 3 (1080p, Ultra) opgenomen framerates lieten zien. Hoewel we twee kleine framedrops tegenkwamen, waren deze helemaal niet dramatisch en, nog belangrijker, helemaal niet merkbaar. Met andere woorden, ze hadden geen tastbaar effect op de spelervaring, en de benchmark werd afgesloten met een gemiddelde van 151 FPS.

Compute prestaties

In onze render tests presteerde de KFA2 GeForce RTX 3080 SG 12 GB zeer goed ten opzichte van zijn eigen interne concurrenten. Hij kwam op een steenworp afstand van de veel duurdere Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090, die slechts 7 % sneller was in ons prestatie klassement. Nvidia GPU's kunnen echter niet op tegen AMD's RDNA2-generatie GPU's, die het elke keer beter deed dan zijn concurrenten. Houd in gedachten dat uw individuele werklast van grote invloed is op de algehele rekenprestaties, en u moet dus naar elke afzonderlijke test kijken wanneer u een GPU kiest voor GPU-computing voor algemeen gebruik

De uitstoot is over het algemeen een gemengd beeld. Aan de ene kant is de koeler van de KFA2 goed gemaakt en wist hij de GeForce RTX 3080 GPU betrouwbaar en stil koel te houden. In feite konden we de ventilatoren nauwelijks horen vanuit een gesloten behuizing. Bij 1.920 rpm weten de drie 92 mm ventilatoren genoeg lucht door de koelribben te verplaatsen om de GA102 chip op 75 °C te houden en het VRAM op een iets hogere 86 °C onder belasting. Aan de andere kant was het stroomverbruik van de grafische kaart onder belasting immens. Het piekte op maar liefst 350 W, wat vergelijkbaar is met dat van een Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 FE. De MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Suprim X wist dat te overtreffen en vereiste een nog hogere 420 W. Tijdens het gamen noteerden we een gemiddeld stroomverbruik van 518 W.

Merk op dat de KFA2 een extra optionele 80 mm ventilator bevat, die aan de bovenkant van de kaart kan worden gemonteerd om extra koeling te bieden voor de heat pipes langs de achterkant van de kaart. Als u ervoor kiest deze ventilator te installeren, moet u ervoor zorgen dat er voldoende ruimte is tussen de GPU en de RAM-sleuven. Ons specifieke testsysteem was niet compatibel met deze opstelling, en we konden de optionele ventilator dan ook niet monteren.

De Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB is de RTX 3080-chip waar velen om hebben gevraagd sinds de chip voor het eerst werd geïntroduceerd, en het kostte Nvidia 1,5 jaar om te luisteren en te beseffen dat er in feite een markt was voor een 12 GB-variant van zijn RTX 3080. Alleen de tijd zal leren of het al dan niet te laat kwam, gezien het feit dat de volgende generatie GPU's, de RTX 4000-serie, naar verluidt klaar is om binnenkort te lanceren. Dienovereenkomstig zijn de huidige high-end GPU's een harde verkoop, vooral omdat de meeste gamers die een RTX 3000-serie GPU wilden er al een hebben gekocht en upgrades binnen de 3000-serie niet per se aan te raden en de moeite waard zijn.

De KFA2 GeForce RTX 3080 SG 12 GB presteerde over het algemeen erg goed in onze benchmarks. Dit gold echter alleen voor zijn ruwe prestaties. Hij presteerde consistent beter dan een gewone GeForce RTX 3080 en presteerde iets slechter dan een GeForce RTX 3090.

Het stroomverbruik daarentegen was enorm. We moeten echter opmerken dat dit niet de schuld is van KFA2, aangezien andere bord partners vergelijkbare ontwerpen zullen produceren met identiek stroomverbruik. De koeler van de grafische kaart beviel ons goed, hoewel u er rekening mee moet houden dat dit ontwerp met drie sleuven een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid ruimte in beslag neemt en mogelijk niet compatibel is met uw moederbord.

De KFA2 GeForce RTX 3080 SG 12 GB is een betere GeForce RTX 3080 en beschikt over betrouwbare koeling en geweldige RGB-verlichting.

Als je in de markt bent voor een nieuwe GPU is de KFA2 GeForce RTX 3080 SG 12 GB misschien de moeite waard om eens nader te bekijken, omdat het de betere keuze is dan de gewone RTX 3080 dankzij de 12 GB aan VRAM. Prijzen beginnen rond de $1,200 op dit moment, en vergelijkbare kaarten gemaakt door Gigabyte,Zotac,Asus, of MSI zijn niet goedkoper.
