90% Dell 14 Plus review: A versatile, well-designed, budget-friendly 2025 laptop

The Dell 14 Plus is part of the new branding from Dell, and this design is really sharp for a budget laptop. The build quality is also pretty solid, with everything feeling tight and well built. The performance of both the AMD and Intel Core Ultra CPUs was fantastic and on par with what I’ve been seeing from both all year round. The camera and speakers are decent, not mind-blowing, but decent enough. The battery life is fantastic on both the AMD and Intel, though I felt the Intel held out slightly longer. The price points are what really make this worth buying. The 2-in-1 does cost a bit more, but if you don’t need that, you can just get the Dell 14 Plus laptop. The display does need more brightness. It works fine indoors and in areas without bright sunlight or bright direct light.

You don't get fancy features like Dell's best trackpad or a build that's quite as light as some other options, but the laptop is reliable and gets the basics right. That said, if you're not tied to a single operating system, the M4 MacBook Air is still our top pick for the best laptop in this price range. It performs better, has a better screen, a thinner build, and a longer battery life. For some, those things aren't enough to switch to macOS, and if that's the case for you, then the Dell 14 Plus is worth considering, whether you go for the laptop or the 2-in-1.

The Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1 is the latest hybrid laptop from the venerable Windows laptop maker, marking its first 2-in-1 since the company's major rebranding earlier this year, which replaced the Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 2-in-1. Fortunately, as with the clamshell Dell 14 Plus, Dell's latest 2-in-1 offers very solid performance at a fantastic price. But given that this is a 2-in-1, typically a form factor where the display takes center stage, the dim, lackluster panel makes this a less attractive option as a 2-in-1 than its clamshell sibling. Starting at $649.99 / £849 / AU$1,498.20, the Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1 does earn its place among the best 2-in-1 laptops this year thanks to its affordable starting price, especially in the US and Australia where the AMD Ryzen AI 300 configurations are available. When these configurations make it to the UK, the prices there ought to be much cheaper to start as well.

If you’re looking for a convertible laptop that is the whole package, the Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1 is not that laptop. If you’ve got the budget to spare, we’d recommend the Asus Vivobook 16 Flip or Lenovo Yoga 9i 2-in-1 Aura Edition instead. The Vivobook is just a bit pricier than the Dell 14 Plus and offers the more powerful Intel Core Ultra 7 258V chipset and a 16-inch OLED display. The Yoga 9i is far pricier but has a gorgeous OLED display that makes it fantastic for your next Netflix binge. However, if you need to stick to a tight budget, the Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1 is affordable and gives you great battery life and solid general performance. The Dell’s affordability does come at the expense of a vibrant display and quality audio, but if you want a 2-in-1 more for web surfing flexibility in tablet mode rather than for content streaming, it’s a decent choice. It’s just hard to recommend a convertible laptop that suffers from a poor display and poor audio.

The Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1 is closer to half of one and half of the other, than the convertible experience it promises. The exterior is stylish and seems hard wearing, but then you open it up and the interior surfaces are plastic. That's likely to cause issues with longevity when folded back into notetaking or presentation modes, which is a shame because the laptop excels in non-standard configurations. Dell has clearly positioned this to undercut the Lenovo Yoga range, which is still where I'd aim my sights on if I wanted a convertible laptop at a reasonable price. But when you can get gems like the Asus Zenbook for less than the starting MSRP of the Dell, you have to ask if the stylus and plastic interior are worth it.

The Dell 14 Premium, especially as configured for our review, is difficult to fit into a particular niche. At its core, it’s a general-use ultraportable, and it delivers there with a slick design, luxe feel, and the essential features you’d want from a more premium option. However, the cost of our model, ballooned by its premium OLED screen and extra storage, puts it into a price tier where much more powerful laptops live. The feature set has its welcome bonuses, but when looking at laptops approaching $2,000 and beyond, that money, in many cases, can get you a discrete GPU or a more powerful processor. Even Dell's less expensive base model is a little underwhelming for the price in terms of performance, and you’re paying primarily for the build.

The Dell 14 Premium (DA14250) laptop is a great buy for a specific clientele. Professionals who want a 3.2K OLED display, an outstanding CPU, and excellent battery life will love this laptop. However, the Arrow Lake IGP isn't fantastic. If it were me, I'd upgrade to the NVIDIA GPU. Its other faults include a disappointing speaker system, odd design choices, and an uncomfortable build. If you can overlook those things, this laptop is still a solid choice. If you can't, I'd go with a competitor and peruse our best laptops lineup.

While it's not a terrible laptop, the Dell 14 Premium is a hard machine to recommend. It's a strange assemblage of components that don't pair particularly well with some innovative design innovations that are hindrances as much as boons. Its premium pricing doesn't do it any favors given its mediocre performance, either. Though as of this writing it's on sale for $2,099, which makes it slightly more palatable, at its full $2,449 MSRP, it falls short of competing laptops at lower prices. Again, the other configurations which omit the OLED are certainly cheaper, though are still priced quite highly (especially at MSRP), and don't compare favorably to less expensive, non-OLED alternatives for more productivity-focused users.

I spent a week with the Dell 14 Premium. Here’s why you should get a different laptop

At $1,700 — the cheapest price you can get the Dell 14 Premium with an OLED display — this laptop costs slightly more than it should. That price is $101 more than Apple’s 14-inch MacBook Pro M4, and both laptops pack 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and a great screen. The MacBook Pro, however, boasts better battery life and a much better design with regular function row keys and a traditional touchpad. The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x also packs a high-res OLED screen, and the same amount of memory and storage, and it’s $400 less (you can currently get one for $1,300 at Best Buy.) That laptop does carry the quirks of an Arm-based processor, which include lackluster support for legacy devices, as well as only running beta versions of some Adobe applications. It’s the best Windows laptop, but it’s still not without caveats.

What we have here are aesthetics-focused notebooks with reasonable performance but limited upgradeability, which is common for laptops in this weight class. It's only once you start to dig in with these machines that you may start to encounter some frustrations. First and foremost on our list are the capacitive function buttons, which are a divisive design choice. If a user is accustomed to standard markings and tactility for the trackpad area, they might find Dell's invisible trackpad frustrating, too. Neither of these issues ruin the value proposition of these laptops, but they may be frustrating for some.

2025 Dell 16 Premium and 14 Premium Laptop Review: XPS reborn with Arrow Lake processors in a familiar design

The new Dell 16 Premium and Dell 14 Premium have a couple of key differences from last year. The most obvious and main difference is that they are no longer called XPS. The other differences come with configuration and performance. These new machines are now running Intel’s latest Arrow Lake processors and NVIDIA’s latest dedicated GPUs. Arrow and Lunar Lake processors have proven to be much better on battery life with the new CPU/GPU/NPU integration, and that continues to be the case here. Normally, I might advise folks to save some money and purchase last year’s models discounted. But with the new performance boosts, you can’t go wrong with buying the Dell 16 Premium or the 14 now. Dell is already running specials to get the ball rolling on these new devices. Yes, you might miss the XPS name, but you’re essentially getting everything but the name here.

With all that said, the Dell 14 Plus (DB14255) is a boring laptop — but that's largely okay. Plenty of people want a boring laptop, and this PC is bound to attract a whole lot of tasty sales to make it an easier pill to swallow than it is at full price. This is a workhorse, so it drops the frills and extraneous features to deliver good performance, solid battery life, enough ports, and a comfortable keyboard. Sure, the display is dim and washed out, and the speakers are tinny, but that won't prevent you from getting the job done. You can configure your own Dell 14 Plus (DB14255) from $799.99 at Dell.com. This one won't be landing on our list of best Windows laptops any time soon, but the Dell 14 Plus is a decent machine.

Dell: Dell is een Amerikaanse fabrikant (gevestigd in Texas) van computerhardware, opgericht in 1984 en is een van de grootste internationale fabrikanten, zowel qua marktaandeel als qua notebookmodellen. De productlijn omvat desktops, notebooks, opslagsystemen, monitors, servers, printers, consumentenelektronica en randapparatuur. Dell biedt laptops die geschikt zijn voor verschillende toepassingen, zoals zakelijke laptops, gaming laptops, ultra portables en werkstations. De zakelijke laptops uit de Latitude en Precision series van Dell zijn een optie voor professionele gebruikers en bedrijven.

In 2023 had Dell een marktaandeel van ongeveer 17% in de wereldwijde verkoop van pc's en stond daarmee op de derde plaats, na Lenovo en HP.

Voor gameliefhebbers is er Dell's Alienware merk voor gaming notebooks.

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

Intel Arc 140V: Een behoorlijk snelle geïntegreerde grafische adapter die naar verluidt bepaalde Intel Lunar Lake processors gebruiken. Als recente uitgelekte benchmarkscores een indicatie zijn, zullen de gamingprestaties iets beter zijn dan die van de GeForce MX570.

Intel Lunar Lake:

Core Ultra 7 256V: Een processor uit de Lunar Lake familie voor het hogere middensegment. Dit is een SoC voor gebruik in slankere laptops en tablets met 4 nieuwe E-cores en 4 nieuwe P-cores op maximaal 4,8 GHz, samen met de veelbelovende nieuwe Arc 140V iGPU en 16 GB on-package LPDDR5x-8533 RAM. Een nieuwe 47 TOPS neurale engine, TB 4 en PCIe 5 SSD ondersteuning zijn ook inbegrepen.

AMD :

Ryzen AI 7 350: Een relatief krachtige processor uit de Strix Point familie die in oktober 2024 zijn debuut maakte. De APU met hybride architectuur heeft 8 CPU-kernen (een mix van Zen 5- en Zen 5c-kernen) die op maximaal 5,0 GHz draaien, samen met de Radeon 880M grafische adapter en de 50 TOPS XDNA 2 neurale engine. De AMD Secure Processor (in een notendop een on-package ARM co-processor) is ook aan boord, net als een paar andere high-end functies, zoals AMD-Vi. Andere belangrijke kenmerken zijn PCIe 4, USB 4 en tot LPDDR5x-8000 RAM ondersteuning, inclusief ECC RAM. De TDP vermogensdoelstelling voor de lange termijn kan oplopen tot 55 W.

Ryzen AI 5 340: Een relatief krachtige processor uit de Krackan Point-familie die begin 2025 werd geïntroduceerd. De APU bevat 6 CPU-kernen (drie Zen 5-kernen met maximaal 4,8 GHz en drie Zen 5c-kernen met maximaal 3,4 GHz). De geïntegreerde Ryzen AI levert tot 50 INT8 TOPS voor het versnellen van verschillende AI workloads.

Intel Arrow Lake:

Ultra 7 255H: High-end mobiele processor gebaseerd op de Arrow Lake architectuur met 16 cores verdeeld over 3 clusters. De snelle 6 P-cores klokken tot 5,1 GHz. Er zijn ook 8 kleinere E-cores met maximaal 4,4 GHz en 2 kleine energiezuinige cores (zelfde architectuur) met maximaal 2,5 GHz. Er is een kleine NPU geïntegreerd met 13 TOPS piekprestaties en ondersteuning voor vPro Essentials.

Dit gewicht is typisch voor erg grote tablets, subnotebooks, ultrabooks en convertibles met een 11-13 inch schermdiagonaal.

75.48%: Dit cijfer is niet echt overtuigend. Het moet in acht worden genomen dat er bijna geen laptops zijn die een score onder de 60% hebben. Dit notebook is beneden gemiddeld beoordeeld, en is niet aanbevolen te kopen.
