De MacBook Pro 14 is in de basis een erg goede laptop, dankzij het uitstekend ogende scherm, de geweldige touchpad, de uitstekende prestaties, de redelijk goede accuduur, de hele goede speakertjes, de goede bouwkwaliteit en ook de stille fans. Storend zijn vooral het slechte toetsenbord en het gebrek aan (gratis) apps en goede werkende games. Ook het grote gewicht kan een probleem zijn. Wat ik nog niet heb genoemd is de prijs van de MacBook Pro. Die is hoog, zeker als je nog wat meer werkgeheugen wilt of meer opslag. Het werkgeheugen en de opslag is ook niet uitbreidbaar. Ik heb zelf mijn eigen MacBook tweedehands zgan gescoord voor een zacht prijsje. Voor wat je er normaal voor betaalt zijn er ook interessante alternatieven in Windows-land te krijgen, met name ook veel lichtere laptops, met soms betere schermen (zeker qua responstijd) en vergelijkbare accuduur.

Dan tot slot the elephant in the room, voor mij tenminste. Had ik deze laptop gekocht als de 13 inch pro voor mij een optie was geweest? Objectief gezien denk ik van niet. De enige reden die ik dan had kunnen bedenken was puur hebberigheid. Ik kan luxe en kwaliteit ontzettend waarderen. De vraag is echter of die luxe honderden euro's extra zouden kunnen verantwoorden. Ik heb het geluk dat ik het zakelijk kan afschrijven, dus dat verkleind het gat natuurlijk enorm. Maar als ik heel eerlijk moet zijn, dan is de 13 inch Pro, of misschien zelfs de Air een betere koop dan de 14 inch Pro. Wanneer je per se dual monitor support nodig hebt zoals ik, dan zit er misschien helaas niks anders op. Ik verwacht wel dat Apple dit bij de M2 zal oplossen. Het scherm, de webcam, de speakers, magsafe... het zijn stuk voor stuk fijne dingen om te hebben, maar mijns inziens geen honderden euro's extra waard. Als geld minder een issue is, dan kan ik maar 1 ding zeggen: van kopen krijg je denk ik echt geen spijt. De 14 inch MacBook Pro 2021 is namelijk echt een genot om mee te werken!

But like a Telfar bag, Apple doesn’t come cheap. $2,899 is a lot to swallow, even with trade-ins and payment plans. And that $1,999 starting price isn’t much better. It would have been nice if Apple would have offered $1,200, maybe one with last year’s M1 chip. But for everything the MacBook Pro 14 is bringing, it’s a worthwhile investment.

The MacBook Pro 2021 is a wonderful, expensive and hard-to-ignore laptop. After a few years of MacBook Pros with hefty sacrifices, this feels like the most complete Apple product I’ve ever reviewed. My verdict on the MacBook Pro 14in, then, is very much the same as it was for the MacBook Pro 16in. It’s a stupendous laptop and, if you have the cash and need a powerful portable for demanding creative work, then it’s a no brainer. Just go out and buy one. If the cost isn’t a deal-breaker, then the only decision you’ll have to make is whether to buy the 14in model or the larger, heavier 16in one. My preference would be to opt for this smaller machine as it’s cheaper, lighter and more portable, yet still just as powerful as the larger laptop. Plus you still get great battery life. By all means, go for the larger 16in MacBook Pro if money is no object and you see yourself using it principally at home, or if you require a larger screen to make video and photo editing more comfortable; for me, however, the 14in just edges the battle between the two as the best all-round laptop in the land.

It's 3.5 pounds, compared to 3 pounds for the current 13-inch Pro and 2.8 pounds for the MacBook Air. A half-pound may not sound like much, but in the arms race toward ever slimmer and lighter laptops, we're now definitely moving in the opposite direction. For the creative pros and other power users who have been waiting for a post-Intel Mac with the graphics processing power they need for their work, that will hardly matter. For casual users who just want the latest and greatest MacBook, you'll have to calculate if the portability trade-off is worth it for the new features, which include a better webcam and more ports.

I ran a quick test using Geekbench 5 and found that while its single-core score was roughly the same as an M1 MacBook Pro or iMac, its multi-core score was a staggering 70% higher. In fact, its score of 12,756 is better than even powerful desktop-class CPUs from Intel like the Core i9-11900K. So far so good, but then you are probably not expecting anything less from a notebook that starts at S$2,999. As for this particular unit, it is – get ready – an eye-watering S$6,149. The fully-loaded M1 Max chip, 64GB unified memory, and 2TB storage add S$1,050, S$1,200, and S$900 respectively to the starting price. As is the case for most modern notebooks, the new MacBook Pros are not user-upgradeable so you have to be really sure of what you want when placing your order.

That's the million-dollar question -- or at least the $2,500-and-up question. Every video editor and creative pro I've spoken to is either excited to get or has already preordered one. For that audience, the decision comes down more to screen size and a small, medium or large number of GPU cores. If you're not specifically going to use these new hardware capabilities and just want the latest, coolest MacBook, know that you're making what is essentially a vanity purchase. The plain old $999 MacBook Air, with its own M1 Chip, is still the most universally useful laptop most people can buy. You do, however, lose out on the new 1080p webcam, which is frankly fantastic. That's the million-dollar question -- or at least the $2,500-and-up question. Every video editor and creative pro I've spoken to is either excited to get or has already preordered one. For that audience, the decision comes down more to screen size and a small, medium or large number of GPU cores. If you're not specifically going to use these new hardware capabilities and just want the latest, coolest MacBook, know that you're making what is essentially a vanity purchase. The plain old $999 MacBook Air, with its own M1 Chip, is still the most universally useful laptop most people can buy. You do, however, lose out on the new 1080p webcam, which is frankly fantastic.
