De Samsung Galaxy S8 is nog steeds een toptoestel. De accu kan misschien nog iets beter, maar de prestaties, camera en software zijn dik in orde. Ben je op zoek naar een nieuwe smartphone en wil je mijn advies: de S8 is nog steeds een erg goede keuze, ook nadat ik het toestel ruim drie maanden actief gebruikt hebt. Misschien zou ik volgende keer wel voor de S8+ gaan, in verband met de grotere accu, maar vooralsnog ben ik erg tevreden met de reguliere S8.

Het beeldscherm van de Samsung S8 is natuurlijk zijn grote aantrekkingskracht. Een telefoon met zo min mogelijk ruimte rondom het scherm wordt door velen als het ultieme doel beschouwd, maar of een scherm met een vooralsnog onorthodoxe verhouding, zoals op de S8, ook een aanvulling is daar zijn wij nog niet van overtuigd. De edges maken het scherm optisch nog iets smaller en dienen vooral om het toestel dunner te laten lijken maar qua functionaliteit blijft het toch een beetje een gimmick. Desalniettemin is de combinatie van het design en de camera met een vernieuwde interface van de S8 een mooie en moderne verschijning.

De Samsung Galaxy S8 is een ontzettend mooi ontworpen smartphone en zet een nieuwe standaard neer voor phablets. De fabrikant laten zien dat die apparaten echt niet grof en log hoeven te zijn, terwijl er aan de andere kant niets wordt ingeleverd op kracht en schermgrootte. Wel zijn er natuurlijk enkele nadelen aan het design: zo kunnen mensen met grote handen mogelijk kramp ervaren doordat het toestel dus helemaal niet breed is. Ook is er een ietwat tegenvallende accu aan boord, maar wel eentje die de dag vol moet kunnen maken.

Met de lancering van de Galaxy S7 was het verschil ten opzichte van haar voorganger niet heel groot. Het design was vrijwel gelijk en het toestel was verder vooral sneller en kreeg een beter camera. Met de Galaxy S8 maakt Samsung echt weer een sprong vooruit qua technologie. Sterker nog, het laat op zo veel gebieden innovatie zien, dat andere merken echt aan het werk moeten om met een goed tegenbod te komen. De Samsung Galaxy S8 is voor nu duidelijk het beste dat je kunt krijgen.

Als we al onze ervaringen die we de afgelopen tijd hebben opgedaan met de Galaxy S8 eens op een hoopje vegen, dan komen we tot de conclusie dat Samsung een zeer fraai staaltje techniek op de markt heeft gebracht. Zoveel scherm in zo’n kleine verpakking is gewoon een zeer opvallende prestatie. Het geheel is verder ook nog eens uitstekend afgewerkt en ligt erg prettig in de hand. Qua design is de plaatsing van de vingerafdruklezer de enige dissonant. Die zingt dan ook meteen behoorlijk vals wat ons betreft. Wij snappen echt niet waarom Samsung ervoor heeft gekozen om dat onderdeel op zo’n rare plaats te plaatsen. Ben je een liefhebber van de vingerafdruklezer, dan is dit echt iets waar je vooraf even goed over na moet denken wat ons betreft.

Onze eerste indruk van de Samsung Galaxy S8 en S8+ is zonder meer een positieve. Het is erg knap om te zien hoeveel scherm er in een relatief kleine behuizing is gestopt. Als je de S8 en S8+ in handen hebt, heb je niet het idee dat je met 5,8- en 6,2-inch toestellen van doen hebt. Ze zien en voelen een stuk kleiner. Aan de nieuwe 18,5:9-verhouding moesten we heel even wennen, maar het voelde vrij snel al als gewoon.

Selfie videos are pretty good, too, with the exception of a slightly ineffective stabilization system that can result in distortion effects. Overall, the Galaxy S8 is still an attractive option for the budding selfie shooter, despite its age.

Even though this might not be the best phone, the Galaxy S8 is definitely the best smartphone from Samsung till date. It has a brilliant Infinite display that blends seamlessly into the body of the phone on all the side and the new Samsung UX complements it. Build quality of the phone is good and the performance is good as well without any lags. One of the main concerns is the placement of the fingerprint sensor on the back that makes it useless. Hope the upcoming Galaxy Note8 will use under-glass fingerprint sensor as rumored. Samsung could also have used a better camera sensor to compete with the Google Pixel, since the images taken on the S8 is not a huge improvement compared to Galaxy S7. We still have to wait to find out how the English version of the Bixby voice compares with Google Assistant and Siri.

Despite the stark new appearance and display aspect ratio, it is yet to be decided if this new, almost bezel-less design trend of the Galaxy S8 is going to lead to a meaningful change in how we experience the smartphone as a tool. Having the bezels reduced is perfectly OK when it comes to aesthetics, but introducing an extra tall display is a change of practical meaning. Throughout this review, we saw that the taller display could be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it does allow for more content to be shown without increasing the width of the phone, which is always good, but on the other, it can lead to usability discomfort in case the user interface and the content viewed are not optimized well enough for the extravagant aspect ratio. And in the case of the Galaxy S8, we can’t say that all has been executed flawlessly.

The Infinity Display and the metal/glass chassis that embraces it are impressive beyond words. The oblong shape may require a short adjustment period, but I assure you you'll fall in love with the S8, if not for its good looks then for its proven performance and winning personality. Call quality and data speeds are great, battery life is about average, and other hardware facets do their jobs perfectly.

That’s pricing approaching iPhone territory, though you will have to consider that both devices use large, hard-to-produce curved Super AMOLED panels. Still, that price though.
