Boterzacht. De Redmi K30, verkocht als de POCO X2 in India, vertrouwd op high-end features zoals 5G-verbindingen, een 120 Hz beeldscherm en nieuwe Sony IMX686 beeldsensor. De prijs start echter bij € 250, waarmee een aanzienlijk deel van de middenklasse markt onderuit gehaald wordt. Zoals we zullen toelichten zijn er ook minpunten.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 2358 Hz ≤ 43 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 2358 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 43 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 2358 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 50 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 17113 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 84 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (24.9 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

De Redmi K30 ziet er niet alleen goed uit maar heeft ook goede specificaties voor een prijs van ongeveer € 300. Ondersteuning voor 5G mobiele data en een 120Hz beeldscherm waren bijvoorbeeld eerst alleen bestemd voor dure vlaggenschip smartphones. De nieuwe Sony IMX686 beeldsensor presteerde prima overdag en zet de nieuwe norm voor smartphone camera’s in deze prijsklasse. De nieuwe Qualcomm SoC biedt genoeg prestaties om nieuwe games te spelen.

Als Xiaomi een gelijkwaardige Europese uitvoering van de Redmi K30 5G op de markt zou brengen zou de Redmi K30 de beste keuze zijn voor € 300.

Hoewe de Redmi K30 5G veel pluspunten heeft, kwamen we toch een paar minpunten tegen in ons testmodel. Als we de specifieke beperkingen van het gebruik van een Chinese-markt telefoon in Europa even negeren, dan zien we nog dat de Redmi K30 niet een beeldscherm heeft met de kwaliteit die bijvoorbeeld OLED levert. In de praktijk betekend dat een lagere contrastverhouding dan de concurrentie en het IPS-beeldscherm heeft ook last van straalkransen. Het paneel gebruikt ook PWM, maar dat is ook bij de meeste OLED schermen het geval. De microfoon van het testmodel kon ons ook niet overtuigen, maar een tweede testmodel zal moeten bevestigen of dat een structureel probleem is of niet. Al met al is de Redmi K30 5G een uitstekende middenklasse smartphone waarvan we hopen dat deze snel in Europa beschikbaar komt.
