Mimimi? Xiaomi's 2018 Mi 8 vlaggenschip smartphone is nog lang niet verouderd en biedt nog erg veel voor een erg lage prijs. Het is tijd om te bekijken hoe deze smartphone het doet in vergelijking met huidige premium smartphones.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 238 Hz

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 238 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) .

De frequentie van 238 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9868 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde snelle responstijden in onze tests en zou geschikt moeten zijn voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 5 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (25.5 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.

Toen we eerder de Mi 8 Explorer Edition testten beoordeelden we deze als de standaard in de sub-€400 prijsklasse. Dit geld ook voor de Mi 8. Deze is niet zo uitzonderlijk als de Explorer Edition, heeft minder bling (zo ontbreekt de doorzichtige afdekking van de vingerafdrukscanner) maar heeft wel nog steeds de bewezen mainstream componenten voor een redelijke prijs. Zelfs vele maanden nadat de smartphone officieel in het westen gelanceerd is, blijft deze goedkoper dan vele van de concurrenten, inclusief de zelfverklaarde vlaggenschip-killer OnePlus 6T.

De smartphone voldoet misschien niet aan de hoogste standaarden en verwachtingen - de GPS is niet nauwkeurig genoeg, de Wi-Fi is te traag en het stroomverbruik is te hoog. In het dagelijks gebruik voelt deze echter als een premium smartphone, dankzij de stevige behuizing, krachtige SoC, HDR-geschikt AMOLED-beeldscherm en fatsoenlijke invoerapparaten.

Dankzij de superieure prijs/prestatie-verhouding houdt de Xiaomi Mi 8 zijn woord.

Er zijn twee echte nadelen. Ten eerste, de fabrieksgarantie (of eigenlijk het gebrek daaraan) en klanten zijn gewezen op garantieafhandeling van de winkel. Ten tweede is de hoeveelheid bloatware die niet verwijderd kan worden ongelooflijk, ondanks dat het besturingssysteem en de software deze keer wel vertaald zijn. En zodra je dieper kijkt in de opties en instellingen, worden zaken al snel... laten we het "uniek" noemen.

Onder aan de streep verdient de Xiaomi Mi 8 nog steeds onze volmondige aanbeveling, en niet alleen door de dubbeltje-op-de-eerste-rij-factor. We kunnen niet wachten op de Xiaomi Mi 9, die we al over enkele weken in handen verwachten te krijgen.
