Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 1852 Hz ≤ 98 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 1852 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 98 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 1852 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 53 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 8813 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Op veel vlakken is de Latitude 5290 2-in-1 de Surface Pro voor de zakelijke wereld. Alles van de bescheiden uitstraling, robuuste beveiligingsopties, geringe geluidsproductie, het relatief eenvoudige onderhoud en bovengemiddelde aanbod van poorten passen uitstekend bij het alledaags zakelijk gebruik. Daarbij zijn we tevreden over de zeer stevige aluminium behuizing, zeer snelle CPU, het extreem heldere en levendige beeldscherm en het goede toetsenbord/touchpad (bij de los verkrijgbare $150 kostende Travel Keyboard accessoire). Ook de optionele Dell Active Pen ($60) voldoet aan de eisen van een unieke groep gebruikers die nauwkeurige Wacom drukgevoelige stylus invoer eisen.

Op veel vlakken is de Latitude 5290 2-in-1 de Surface Pro voor de zakelijke wereld; de overwogen combinatie van luxe met zakelijke degelijkheid maakt het een unieke convertible die voldoet aan zeer specifieke eisen.

Er zijn echter geen perfecte apparaten en de Latitude 5290 heeft een aantal kenmerkende tekortkomingen. Bovenal zijn de looptijden een stuk korter dan moderne concurrenten met Kaby Lake chipset SoC's. Ook de hoge temperaturen (zowel aan het oppervlak als aan de binnenkant) zijn ongewenst. De standaard garantieperiode is kort voor een apparaat met zo'n hoge prijs. Het ontbreken van Thunderbolt zal een obstakel zijn voor gebruikers die veelzijdige aansluitingen vragen. Tenslotte is er het hoge prijskaartje: het apparaat is met een adviesprijs van $1932 niet bepaald goedkoop, maar voor deze prijs worden wel het Travel Keyboard en Active Pen meegeleverd.

De belangrijkste concurrenten blijven de Latitude 5285 (met langere looptijden) van vorig jaar, de Microsoft Surface Pro 2017 (zeer goed maar lastig te upgraden), de HP Elite x2 1012 G2 (veelzijdig maar uiterst lastig te onderhouden) en de Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet Gen 2 (sterke concurrent maar geplaagd door beperkingen van actieve koeling en problemen zoals PWM). Al deze apparaten hebben hun eigen voor- en nadelen en we raden dan ook aan om voor de aanschaf al deze modellen te hebben overwogen. Echter, mits 2-in-1 functionaliteit (en wellicht drukgevoelige pen invoer) een must is, zijn er weinig apparaten die zo'n goede indruk achterlaten als de Latitude 5290.
