De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 54 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 10727 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 588200) Hz waargenomen.

Het evalueren en beoordelen van de Acer Swift 5 bleek een echte uitdaging te zijn. Het zeer lage gewicht van nog geen 1 kg is absoluut een groot voordeel, maar het donkere en uiterst weerspiegelende beeldscherm resulteerde in een lage mobiliteit.

Verdere positieve aspecten zijn het degelijke beeldscherm (afgezien van de hierboven genoemde helderheid), het touchscreen, de snelle SSD en het lage energieverbruik.

Aan de binnenkant bleek er echter van alles mis te zijn. Ten eerste heeft de enorme beknelling van de CPU een aanzienlijke negatieve invloed op de prestaties (maar gaven ook een reden voor het lage energieverbruik). De Swift 5 had geen problemen met korte salvo's, maar liet het al snel afweten bij aanhoudende belasting - een compromis van het uiterst lichte ontwerp. Zelfs de eigen voorganger blijkt sneller te zijn. Een andere opoffering uit de naam van gewichtsbesparing is de kleine batterij, met korte looptijden tot gevolg. Tenslotte laat de bouwkwaliteit veel te wensen over.

De Acer Swift 5 is een groot compromis uit de naam van gewichtsbesparing. Het apparaat is gericht op een specifieke doelgroep die een uiterst lichte laptop verkiezen boven prestaties.

Ondanks de zeer specifieke doelgroep zien we de extreme prestatiebeperkingen als onmiddellijk verbeterpunt. Daarnaast heeft de opvolger als het aan ons ligt een helderder beeldscherm van vergelijkbare kwaliteit.
