Met de iPhone Air krijg je dit jaar echt iets anders in handen ten opzichte van eerdere iPhones. Dankzij een titanium rand is de iPhone Air praktisch onbreekbaar en daar hoef je je tijdens alledaags gebruik geen zorgen over te maken. De iPhone Air voelt kortom luxe aan en is in het assortiment van Apple met zijn flink hogere prijs duidelijk een meer premium model dan de iPhone 17. Je betaalt echter vooral voor die dunnere vormgeving, want op het gebied van mogelijkheden lever je best wel wat in. Zo heeft de iPhone Air maar één speaker waardoor stereogeluid onmogelijk is; jammer als je je smartphone vaak gebruikt voor bijvoorbeeld Netflix. Daarnaast lever je ook in op fotografiegebied.

Hoewel de iPhone mini en de iPhone Plus nieuwe modellen waren van Apple, voelden ze niet echt nieuw. Voor mij voelt de iPhone Air duidelijk wel zo. Apple heeft al zijn technische kennis gebruikt om de smartphone zo smal mogelijk te maken. Het heeft voor mij dan ook een andere feeling dan de andere modellen.Hij is dun, licht en makkelijk met één hand te bedienen. Voor mij persoonlijk is dat echt iets wat ik nodig had. Hoewel ik daarmee concessies moet doen op bijvoorbeeld de camera en batterij, valt dat mee. Met één lading kan ik makkelijk een dag doen, zelfs als ik mijn smartphone soms als hotspot gebruik. Qua camera mis ik eerlijk gezegd niet te veel, maar dat komt omdat ik van een gewone iPhone afkom en ik denk dat de meeste mensen het niet eens echt zullen merken. Voor dit nieuwe model betaal je echter wel een stevige prijs.

While I've been pleasantly blown away by the design, the iPhone Air is a difficult phone to recommend right now.Its super-slender frame is kind of cool, but the novelty wears off after a while.What you're left with is a fairly expensive piece of tech with concessions that many of us won't be able to ignore. This is particularly true for the camera setup and battery life. The low sales figures are proof of this, but I don't think it's a flop despite my current stance. I reckon it's the future of smartphones - the iPhone Air, like any new tech, needs to go through the paces to get better.

If you’ve read everything I’ve written up until this point, you’ll realise that the iPhone Air doesn’t actually sacrifice much in its pursuit of thinness. Durability is pretty much a non-issue, and performance is stellar. Battery life is decent, though much will depend on your usage behaviour. Casual users could find it completely acceptable, but heavy users will no doubt need a mid-day charge to get it to last the entire day. Personally, the single camera system is what will keep me from getting the iPhone Air for myself, not because it’s bad – it’s very good – but because I know there will be times when I’ll miss having a second camera. If you are alright with missing out on capturing the odd shot, you’ll be fine with the iPhone Air. But for a phone that starts at S$1,599, is this acceptable?

The Apple iPhone Air did well in the DXOMARK Camera tests, but the lack of dedicated tele and ultra-wide camera modules means it cannot claim a spot among the best in our ranking. In camera terms the iPhone Air is essentially a simplified version of the iPhone 17 Pro, with only one camera module instead of the Pro’s three. Performance is very close to the 17 Pro’s primary camera module, producing bright pictures with very good image quality. However, the lack of tele and ultra-wide modules impacts the Air’s photography experience, especially when compared to some direct competitors, such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, which include an ultra-wide module for added shooting flexibility. That being said, the Air’s single camera module captures nice photos in most shooting conditions, with usually pleasant colors and warm white balance.

So what to make of this phone? While the iPhone Air is a fresh alternative to the Pro, it compromises in some key areas for the extra-slim design. While the meagre battery life can be overcome most of the time (not least with Apple’s own MagSafe battery pack), the lack of extra camera tech cannot be rectified – next to the Pro, I found that a compromise too far. I really miss the ultrawide – much more so than I’d have thought I would – while the 2x telephoto is limited. As such, while the iPhone Air is a fantastically designed device, Apple itself does much better options if you are happy to go for a little more bulk. Roll on iPhone Air 2 – if Apple can add another camera and longer battery life to this phone, then it could be a fantastic third option to the standard phone or going Pro.

Despite its shortcomings, there is nothing fundamentally wrong with iPhone Air. In fact, it gets an awful lot right. In particular, that slender frame does feel lovely in the hand and it’s nice and light in the pocket. The camera you get is great, it feels smooth in operation, I have no complaints about the display and even the battery life isn’t too bad. And yet, as I’ve said before, I’m not convinced. You can save £200 if you opt for the iPhone 17, and get more for your money, with an extra ultrawide camera at the rear. Or you can go for the iPhone 17 Pro for an extra dollop of battery life, more power and a 4x telephoto lens – for a mere £100 extra. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, meanwhile, delivers the thin phone experience for much less money. So, should you buy the iPhone Air? Well, I’m afraid to say I’d struggle to recommend it. If Apple had managed to squeeze in even one more camera at the rear, I’d have been much more positive. As it is, I’d advise choosing either the iPhone 17 or the 17 Pro instead.

And yes, I've tried bending it with a normal amount of force and it's really sturdy (and doesn't bend at all). I really like how the phone feels, to the point where I'm considering to make it my main phone instead of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. There are certain drawbacks, though. There's only one camera, like the iPhone 16e, though for standard shots, it is as good as the cameras on the iPhone 17 and the 17 Pro Max.

That brings me to the key question surrounding the iPhone Air - who is this phone actually for? The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are aimed squarely at content creators now, while the iPhone 17 is the phone for everyone (even more so now that it features a 120Hz screen), and the iPhone Air... well, I'm still not entirely sure. It wouldn't work for someone like me who's a phone enthusiast, because as cool as the iPhone Air looks, I want that extra ultra-wide/telephoto lens, and I care too much about battery life. I don't think my partner would be happy with it either, given how important battery life is to her. Even my mom would probably opt for the cheaper base iPhone 17 to get that extra camera lens, especially given the minimal price difference. To me, the iPhone Air is for the Apple user who wants a flashy smartphone that makes a statement, and that doesn't care about extra camera lenses and battery life. As cool as the iPhone Air is, my guess is that its audience is pretty small.

There’s a lot happening with the iPhone Air, and I genuinely appreciate the level of engineering that went into this device. The durability is not just a marketing claim; it actually delivers in real-world use. It feels solid, refined, and surprisingly comfortable to hold. If there’s one thing that consistently annoyed me throughout the review, it would be the software experience as most of my frustrations came from iOS 26 rather than the hardware itself. While other brands continue to chase the idea of the perfect foldable smartphone, Apple chose a different direction. Instead of folding displays and mechanical hinges, they focused on creating something slimmer, lighter, and sturdier. It’s a refreshing take and a welcome change in an industry that has been recycling the same designs for years.

For them the iPhone Air is perfect. The fact that it does so much even with its limitations and hardware handicaps is a testament to its ingenuity and Apple’s ability to squeeze magic from ordinary-seeming electronic parts. As a reviewer I see the iPhone Air to be what it is. It is a statement of intent, a device that gives a glimpse into the future of the iPhone. As far as buying it is concerned, I recommend it but conditionally.

While I really love the slim and light design, the iPhone Air is far too niche - for people who want an expensive, good-feeling mobile that they won't actually use much. The camera setup is inflexible and suffers from poor HDR capture, but can generally do the job for simple family snaps. As long as no one is moving too much. The true strength of the iPhone Air's optics is the video capture, which is still one of the best around. Battery life is a serious detriment, however. I rarely managed to make it through a day on a single charge. Slapping a battery pack on the back of the iPhone Air would sadly ruin the look and feel, so this is one for lighter users. And that's a shame, because Apple's skinny sod can actually play games perfectly well.

If you're okay with those drawbacks, the iPhone Air could be your perfect phone, one that will turn heads for sure.

The iPhone Air feels like a Pro design model, in contrast with the usual Pro performance devices the company does. To achieve an extremely slim and lightweight body, Apple had to make some compromises, with the most obvious ones being camera performance. The battery handicap isn't severe as we feared. And even the camera on the back is capable of delivering excellent stills and videos, and the new selfie camera is solid. Obviously the setup is nowhere near as versatile as you can expect at this price point and it's a shame Apple didn't at least opt for the larger 48 MP sensor that the Pros carry.

But three days of continuous use have helped sell me on the value of the iPhone Air. And it offers better sustained performance than Samsung’s slim phone.However, I don’t like that shoppers have to give up both an ultrawide lens and telephoto zoom with the iPhone Air. At least Samsung gives you an ultrawide camera that enables macro photography. But the iPhone Air’s main 48MP camera is very good overall.Apple left some other features on the cutting room floor as well, such as fast charging and Cinematic Mode for video.

If you’re a photography buff, you’re probably going to want the Pro or Pro Max, it’s true, but the camera here is strong. I had to get past an inherent bias in my mind that said one camera couldn’t be enough. In a lot of cases, it was. Sure, there’s a premium for design compared to the regular iPhone 17, but when a phone is as capable as the iPhone 17 Air, as fully-featured, and has drop-dead glorious looks, it seems like a premium that’s worth it.

Though I miss the expanded optical zoom range of the iPhone Pro's cameras, the Air still takes excellent photos and videos as long as you don't mind a limited field of view. If you normally prefer to take selfies, the Air should be more than enough phone for you. For $200 less, however, the standard iPhone 17 is a relative bargain thanks to its much longer battery life, more flexible camera arrangement, and faster mmWave 5G support, making it the best iPhone for most people and our Editors' Choice winner.

Midway through writing this review, I moved over to do some testing with the 17 Pro Max, and when I came back and picked up the Air, I had chills. The phone weighs so much less; holding something with a screen-to-weight ratio like this feels incredible. I think 6.5 inches is the sweet spot for large-screen devices as well. The Pro Max feels like a behemoth, and even last year’s 16 Plus was pretty hefty in retrospect. Slimming down the Air and shrinking the screen makes it feel like it was designed with hands in mind, not just with the sole purpose of putting a giant screen in your pocket. There’s something about that that’s reminiscent of Apple from the past, and more than anything, this feels like a true successor to the iPhone X from 2017.

The moment I held one in my hand, I was immediately blown away by the feel of it in my hand. And it doesn't feel fragile like I expected — instead, it feels pretty solid and substantial. And yes, I've tried bending it with a normal amount of force and it's really sturdy (and doesn't bend at all). I really like how the phone feels, to the point where I'm considering to make this my main phone instead of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Unfortunately, there are certain drawbacks that I need to consider, especially since I need the Pro Max's cameras for work. The iPhone Air only comes with one 48MP camera, and is limited to a 2x zoom.

Apple A19 Pro 5-Core GPU: Een relatief snelle grafische adapter waarmee de Apple A18 Pro SoC is uitgerust. Deze iGPU heeft 6 kernen en is geschikt voor RT; het lijkt erop dat hij gebaseerd is op dezelfde architectuur als GPU's uit de M4-serie. Hij slaagde erin om de 7-core Apple M1 GPU in veel tests te verslaan in onze tests van oktober 2024.

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

A19 Pro: Een krachtige smartphone processor en formele opvolger van de A17 Pro. Hij beschikt over 2 prestatiekernen en 4 efficiënte kernen, samen met een 35 TOPS NPU en de 6-core A18 Pro GPU. De A18 Pro laat zowel de Dimensity 9300 als de Apple A17 Pro en de Apple A18 vrij ver achter zich met minstens 10% voordeel, voor zover het multi-thread prestaties betreft; de 6-core GPU slaagt er ondertussen in om de 7-core M1 GPU in veel tests te verslaan.
