Acer Nitro 5 AN517-53 review: Affordable gaming laptop with RTX 3050

Raytracing voor de middenklasse. Ray tracing was in het verleden voorbehouden aan dure high-end grafische kaarten. Met de GeForce RTX 3050 (Ti) brengt Nvidia de spannende technologie nu ook naar het middensegment. We testen de GPU met de Acer Nitro 5 AN517-53-54DQ.

De Acer Nitro 5, die erg populair is vanwege zijn meestal goede prijs-prestatie verhouding, bestaat in verschillende CPU en GPU configuraties. Wij namen een van de goedkoopste modellen, de AN517-53-54DQ, en haalden het onderste uit de kan. De 17-incher, die voor iets minder dan 1.000 Euro (~$1180) over de (virtuele) toonbank zwerft, kan terugvallen op een quad-core processor uit Intels huidige Tiger-Lake generatie, om precies te zijn de Core i5-11300H.

Veeleisende grafische berekeningen (de notebook ondersteunt Nvidia's Optimus technologie) worden voor zijn rekening genomen door de GeForce RTX 3050 laptop GPU, een gloednieuwe mid-range chip gebaseerd op Nvidia's Ampere architectuur. Het besturingssysteem (Windows 10 Home 64 bit) is geïnstalleerd op een 512 GB NVMe SSD in M.2-formaat. Het beeldscherm is een mat IPS-paneel met 1.920 x 1.080 pixels en 144 Hz.

Kopers zullen wat concessies moeten doen als het gaat om het werkgeheugen. Het geïnstalleerde 8 GB DDR4 RAM is slechts single-rank en draait alleen in single-channel modus, wat soms meer kost en soms resulteert in mindere prestaties, afhankelijk van de (3D) toepassing

Hoewel de zwartwaarde (0,23 cd/m²) en het contrast (1.243:1) van ons testtoestel overtuigend zijn, is de helderheid niet indrukwekkend. Een gemiddelde van 261 cd/m² is voldoende voor de meeste ruimtes binnenshuis, maar het 17-inch apparaat mist duidelijk helderheid op plaatsen met meer licht (serre, terras, enz.). We zouden een gemiddelde van ten minste 300 cd/m² verwachten, zelfs voor een budget gamer

De kleurruimte blijkt echter de grootste zwakte te zijn. 55% sRGB dekking en ongeveer 38% Adobe RGB dekking zijn erg teleurstellend en zorgen voor een nogal flets beeld. Van de vergelijkingsapparaten presteert alleen de MSI GF75 vergelijkbaar slecht. Hetzelfde geldt voor de kleurnauwkeurigheid, hoewel de Lenovo Legion 5 ook hier te wensen overlaat

De andere snelheden zijn eerder onspectaculair. De responstijd van iets minder dan 19 ms van zwart naar wit en 25 ms van grijs naar grijs is bijvoorbeeld noch slecht, noch bijzonder goed. We konden geen flikkering vaststellen bij verminderde helderheid. De kijkhoeken zijn op het gebruikelijke IPS-niveau

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (37.8 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 15324 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Test voorwaarden - Nitro Sense biedt nauwelijks opties

In tegenstelling tot andere gaming notebooks van Acer, heeft de vooraf geïnstalleerde Nitro Sense tool erg weinig functies en opties. Naast de ventilatorregeling, kun je alleen het energiebesparingsplan wijzigen. Onze metingen werden uitgevoerd in de leveringstoestand (zie schermafbeelding).

Prestaties - Moderne middenklasse componenten

Een quad-core CPU duidt op hardware uit het middensegment, evenals 8 GB RAM en een GPU met 4 GB VRAM. Als je iets meer geld investeert, kun je ook de Nitro 5 krijgen met high-end functies (8-core CPU, 16 GB RAM, 6-8 GB GPU).

Zoals gezegd is de Core i5-11300H een quad-core model uit de Tiger Lake serie, die eindelijk niet meer wordt vervaardigd in het verouderde 14 nm proces dat Intel jarenlang gebruikte. De 10 nm CPU biedt 8 MB L3 cache en kan tot 8 threads parallel verwerken via Hyper-Threading. Vergeleken met de klassieke 6- en 8-core chips is het TDP slechts 35 in plaats van 45 watt. Volgens de HWiNFO tool is de processor in de Nitro 5 ingesteld op 40 watt PL1 en 64 watt PL2. De klok ligt - afhankelijk van de toepassing en belasting - tussen 3,1 en 4,4 GHz onder belasting.

We hebben gekeken hoe de CPU zich over een lange periode gedraagt met behulp van Cinebench R15. De prestaties van de Core i5-11300H bleven redelijk constant in de loop en plaatste zich, zoals verwacht, boven de oude Core i5-10300H in de lus.

Ondanks de bescheiden geheugenconfiguratie, is het genoeg voor de eerste plaats in het testveld in de systeem benchmarks. PCMark 10 ziet de Nitro 5 tussen 8% en 40% voorlopen op de concurrentie, waarbij de alledaagse Windows ervaring op alle apparaten zeer vergelijkbaar zou moeten aanvoelen in termen van opstarttijd en laadtijden, etc

Er is lof voor de snelle massaopslag. Terwijl SATA III SSD's met een maximum van 500 - 600 MB/s in het verleden gebruikelijk waren in de budgetsector, maken snelle PCIe/NVMe SSD's langzaam maar zeker deel uit van het standaard repertoire. De Nitro 5 biedt een bijzonder krachtige vertegenwoordiger van dit gilde met de 512 GB versie van de SK Hynix BC711, die de NVMe modellen van de concurrenten achter zich laat, soms aanzienlijk.

Grafische kaart

Het meest interessante aspect voor veel gebruikers is misschien wel de GPU. Terwijl we in het verleden de mobiele GeForce RTX 3050 Ti een of twee keer hebben kunnen onderzoeken, zijn er tot nu toe nauwelijks benchmarkresultaten voor de RTX 3050 verschenen. In vergelijking met de RTX 3050 Ti moet het DirectX 12 model het doen met 2.048 in plaats van 2.560 shaders.

De prestaties zijn echter vooral afhankelijk van het koelsysteem (keyword klokmarge) en de ingestelde TGP. Deze laatste varieert tussen 35 en 80 watt voor de RTX 3050 (zonder Dynamic Boost). In het geval van de Nitro 5 is dat 75 watt inclusief Dynamic Boost, dus een behoorlijk goede waarde die in het bovenste derde ligt.

We zien het beperkte videogeheugen als het zwakke punt. Zowel de RTX 3050 als de RTX 3050 Ti hebben slechts 4 GB GDDR6 VRAM (128-bit interface), wat anno 2021 en zeker gezien de VRAM eisen van veel huidige games niet meer van deze tijd is en een negatieve invloed heeft op de toekomstbestendigheid van de laptop. Zelfs in het middensegment zou nu al minstens 6 GB op zijn plaats zijn.

De Ampere GPU heeft het echter makkelijk tegen de oude GTX 1650, die het nog zonder ray tracing ondersteuning moest doen. In de 3DMark tests is de voorsprong meestal 30 tot 40%. Hij haalt echter niet helemaal het niveau van de GTX 1660 Ti - dat was op voorhand te verwachten

Gaming prestaties

Analoog aan de synthetische benchmarks zit de mobiele GeForce RTX 3050 ook tussen de GTX 1650 (Ti) en de GeForce GTX 1660 Ti in het gaming parcours, waarbij de framerate soms meer de ene en soms meer de andere kant op neigt, afhankelijk van het spel en het VRAM verbruik.

Over het algemeen is de GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU snel genoeg om de meeste titels te draaien in de native resolutie van 1.920 x 1.080 met hoge tot maximale details. Het wordt alleen krap wanneer ray tracing is ingeschakeld of zeer rekenintensieve en/of matig geoptimaliseerde games zoals Assassin's Creed Valhalla en Cyberpunk 2077, waar zelfs medium instellingen een uitdaging worden.
