Acer Nitro 5 AN517-41 in review: RTX 3080 kan zich maar beperkt ontwikkelen

Vertraagd. Acer gunt de geïnstalleerde GeForce RTX 3080 laptop GPU slechts een relatief lage TGP. Hierdoor liggen de framerates duidelijk onder het gemiddelde. Een firmware update zorgt voor enige verbetering.

Acer's 17.3-inch gaming notebook wordt aangedreven door een Ryzen 7-5800HAPU en een GeForce RTX-3080 Laptop GPU. De configuratievariant die wij hebben is verkrijgbaar voor net geen 2.000 euro (~$2359). Tot de concurrenten behoren apparaten als de Medion Erazer Beast X25, de MSI GP76 Leopard 10UGen de Schenker XMG Neo 17.

Hoewel het contrast (1.279:1) van het kijkhoekstabiele, snel reagerende 17,3-inch scherm (FHD, IPS, 144 Hz) voldoet aan de doelstelling (> 1.000:1), is de gemiddelde helderheid (263,9 cd/m²) te laag. Wij beschouwen waarden boven 300 cd/m² als goed. De kleurweergave in de staat van levering is behoorlijk.

Dit is hetzelfde paneel dat ook gebruikt wordt in het RTX-3070 zustermodel. Toch verschillen de gemeten waarden lichtjes - een normale toestand. Twee identieke schermen komen nooit helemaal overeen

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 15324 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Prestaties - RTX-3080 met lage TGP

Met de Nitro 5 AN517-41 heeft Acer een 17,3-inch gaming notebook in zijn assortiment die elke actuele game vloeiend op het scherm brengt en ook op alle andere toepassingsgebieden een goed figuur slaat.

Testomstandigheden

De voorgeïnstalleerde NitroSense software biedt verschillende prestatieprofielen en maakt het mogelijk om de twee ventilatoren te beïnvloeden. We hebben alle benchmarks uitgevoerd met het prestatieprofiel "Hoge prestaties" en gebruik gemaakt van de automatische ventilatorregeling. De prestatieprofielen komen overeen met de standaard Windows 10 profielen.

Processor

Het CPU-gedeelte van de Ryzen 7-5800H APU (Cezanne) bestaat uit een acht-core processor die werkt met een basisklok van 3,2 GHz. Een verhoging tot 4,4 GHz is mogelijk via Turbo. Gelijktijdige multithreading (twee threads per core) wordt ondersteund.

De CPU-tests van de Cinebench R15 benchmark worden verwerkt met 3,7 GHz (netvoeding) en 3,2 tot 4,4 GHz (single-thread). De kloksnelheden zijn 1,9 GHz (multi-thread) en 1,5 tot 1,9 GHz (single-thread) in batterijmodus.

Wij controleren of de CPU Turbo ook permanent wordt gebruikt bij netvoeding door de multi-thread test van de Cinebench R15 benchmark gedurende ten minste 30 minuten in een lus uit te voeren. De Turbo wordt op een laag niveau gebruikt

Het systeem werkt soepel. Problemen hebben zich niet voorgedaan. De hardware biedt voldoende rekenkracht, zelfs voor toepassingen die verder gaan dan gaming. Dit wordt niet in de laatste plaats bevestigd door de goede PCMark resultaten

Grafische kaart

De werkelijke prestaties van een RTX-3000 grafische kern hangen grotendeels af van de maximale TGP die een notebook fabrikant kiest binnen de door Nvidia gedefinieerde limieten. Acer geeft de GeForce RTX-3080 Laptop GPU (Overzicht van alle RTX-3080 laptops inclusief de TGP's) een maximale TGP van 100 watt.

De GPU levert gedeeltelijk de laagste benchmarkresultaten die we tot nu toe hebben vastgesteld met de RTX-3080. Er is potentieel voor verbetering: Een firmware-update verhoogt de GPU-prestaties een beetje en brengt de resultaten dichter bij het RTX-3080-gemiddelde. Deupdate verhoogt de TGP niet. Vermoedelijk heeft Acer de temperatuurlimieten naar boven bijgesteld - de Witcher 3 test laat dat in ieder geval zien.

De RTX-3080 kan terugvallen op snel GDDR6 grafisch geheugen (8.192 MB). De in de processor geïntegreerde Vega-8grafische kern is actief en de notebook werkt met Nvidia's Optimus switching grafische oplossing.

Gaming prestaties

De computer brengt alle huidige spellen vloeiend op het scherm. De FHD-resolutie en maximale kwaliteitsinstellingen kunnen meestal worden geselecteerd. De framerates liggen onder het gemiddelde in de RTX-3080 vergelijking.

De framerates van de games die we hebben getest stijgen met maximaal 15% na het installeren van de genoemde firmware update. Een algemene prestatieverhoging wordt niet waargenomen. Echter: Zelfs na het uitvoeren van de update blijft de Nitro achter bij een nominaal zwakkere RTX-3070 notebook zoals de MSI GP76 Leopard 10UG. Hier profiteert de GP76 van de hogere TGP (140 watt vs. 100 watt).
