Ultrabooks, Intel's name for thin and light laptops, tend to be sleek and eye-catching. While the Acer Aspire S3 ultrabook is certainly very slender, its dull grey appearance is far less attractive in the flesh than it is in photos, although some may prefer the less flashy look. The Aspire S3 isn't a bad ultrabook, but its keyboard and battery life could be better and the lack of USB3 ports could be limiting in future.

We’ve now looked at three 13.3” ultrabooks, plus the MacBook Air 11 and 13, and the ASUS UX21E. I’ve also had some hands on time at a local store with a Samsung Series 9, so that covers much of the ultrabook market right now. Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to see any of the Lenovo IdeaPad U300/U400 offerings or any other ultrabooks in person (yet), so I’ll have to leave them out of consideration.

On one hand, it’s a good all-rounder in an amazingly slim, lightweight package. On the other hand, the keyboard will take some getting used to, the trackpad is awkward and the fan noise could drive your office colleagues nuts, however, Acer tells me that the review S3 was from a pre-production batch and what's on sale now should be cured of these ills. Yet for carrying around and flipping open here and there whenever needed, the Acer Aspire S3 is just the job. Oh, and if you want to shave £200 off the price, there's always Acer's Intel 1.6GHz Core i5-2467M model to consider.

Should you buy an S3 Ultrabook? Well, yes. Unless you don't. The MacBook Air remains the better built machine, has the sharper screen and has high-speed Thunderbolt for express file transfer. Spec it up to the Acer’s numbers, though, and it also costs £450 more than the S3. While that could be seen as money well spent (much of it pays for the all-solid-state memory and Apple laptops have a healthier resale value than their peers), Acer’s svelte Ultrabook is still worth considering. After all, with a similar spec, the MacBook Air is a tad slower than the S3. And that's not all. The S3’s considerable processing grunt and supercharged wake times are impressive specs to find in a laptop under two centimetres thin and weighing just 1.3kg. It runs Windows natively and has a full HDMI port. It can sleep for nearly two months and be ready to pounce into Windows in under six seconds. Yes, it costs a lot, but the Acer Aspire S3, like a slightly flawed diamond, is still worth waving your wallet towards. Just don't expect perfection.

We’re yet to hear the exact specs and prices that will be available to us in the UK, but £799 is much easier to swallow than £1099 – even if the Aspire S3 doesn’t quite have the desirability of Apple’s babies. But then who does?

Overall, the Asipre S3 is a good machine, however, it does not feel like a new category of a laptop. Yes, it it quite slim and wakes up and connects to your Wi-Fi fast along with offering a decent battery life and decent performance- but that is certainly not something unheard of. I think Intel should have made some more things mandatory for the Ultrabook platform- such as an SSD and a higher resolution screen.

Dun, snel en geschikt voor gaming. In 2011 introduceerde Acer de Aspire S3-951: de allereerste ultrabook. Na drie jaar zijn we blij kennis te maken met zijn opvolger, de Aspire S3-392G. Deze slanke, compacte computer wordt aangedreven door een krachtige Haswell CPU, een voor gaming geschikte GPU en lekker veel werkgeheugen. In dit korte testrapport lees je waartoe deze 13.3 inch ultrabook in staat is.
Dun, snel en geschikt voor gaming. In 2011 introduceerde Acer de Aspire S3-951: de allereerste ultrabook. Na drie jaar zijn we blij kennis te maken met zijn opvolger, de Aspire S3-392G. Deze slanke, compacte computer wordt aangedreven door een krachtige Haswell CPU, een voor gaming geschikte GPU en lekker veel werkgeheugen. Acer: In 1976 werd het bedrijf in Taiwan opgericht onder de naam Multitech en in 1987 omgedoopt tot Acer of Acer Group. Het productassortiment omvat bijvoorbeeld laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitoren, tv's en computerrandapparatuur. Sinds 2007 is de groep gefuseerd met Gateway Inc. en Packard Bell, die ook hun eigen productlijnen voor laptops op de markt brengen.
Acer computers zijn ontworpen voor verschillende doeleinden, waaronder ultrabooks voor mobiel gebruik, gaming laptops voor gamers, betaalbare opties voor alledaagse taken en 2-in-1 converteerbare laptops voor veelzijdigheid. Het productportfolio van Acer omvat ook tablets die draagbare computer- en multimediamogelijkheden bieden.
Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.
Intel HD Graphics (Sandy Bridge): Geïntegreerde grafische kaart van de Sandy Bridge Pentium en Celeron processoren. Vergelijkbaar met de desktop HD Graphics 2000 en niet familie van de oudere Arrandal geïntegreerde grafische kaart met dezelfde naam.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: Aankomende (1ste kwartaal 2011) geïntegreerde grafische kaart van de Intel Sandy Bridge processoren (Core ix-2xxx). De 3000 / 200 is de snellere, intern GT2 genaamde, versie met 12 Execution Units (EU's).
De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).
Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor grafische kaart in high-end Ivy Bridge modellen. Biedt verschillende kloksnelheden voor verschillende CPU modellen (ULV tot desktop quad-core) en levert daardoor verschillende prestaties.
Intel HD Graphics 4400: ULV geïntegreerde grafische GPU (GT2) met 20 EU's die je aantreft op sommige Haswell CPU modellen.
Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 735M: Mid-range grafische kaart van de GeForce GT 700M serie. Gebaseerd op de Kepler architectuur (GK208) en gefabriceerd door TSMC in een 28nm-proces.

Intel Core i7:
2637M: Energiebesparende ULV-processor met kloksnelheid van 1.7-2.8 GHz dankzij Turbo Boost. Biedt een geïntegreerde HD 3000 op een lage 350/1200 MHz en DDR3-1333 geheugencontroller.
3517U: Snelle Ivy-Bridge ULV-CPU uit Q2 2012. Heeft een kloksnelheid van 1.9 - 3.0 GHz en een HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). Het TDP staat op 17 watt.
Intel Core i5:
2467M: Energiebesparende ULV-processor met kloksnelheid van 1.6-2.3 GHz dankzij Turbo Boost. Biedt een geïntegreerde HD 3000 op een lage 350/1150 MHz en DDR3-1333 geheugencontroller.
3317U: Ivy-Bridge ULV-CPU uit Q2 2012. Heeft een kloksnelheid van 1.7 - 2.6 GHz en een HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). Het TDP staat op 17 watt.
4200U: Haswell-gebaseerde ULV dual-core processor geklokt aan 1.6 GHz met ondersteuning voor Turbo Boost tot en met 2.6 GHz. De CPU is uitgerust met een geïntegreerde HD Graphics 4400 en een dual-channel DDR3 geheugen-controller.
Intel Core i3:
2367M: Energiezuinige ULV processor geklokt op 1.4 GHz zonder Turbo Boost. Met een geïntegreerde HD 3000 geklokt op een langzame 350-1000 MHz en een DDR3-1333 geheugencontroller.
