The camera (while not terrible) is easily outclassed by similarly-priced devices from Google for example, although that’s not always been a strongpoint of POCO phones. Still, if all you’re after is a hardware-oriented Android phone, then the POCO X8 Pro Max might be something that you’ll want to consider.

The Poco X8 Pro Max continues that legacy in a way that global supply shortages could quickly nip in the bud. At its £359 launch discount, it absolutely annihilates the similarly-priced Nothing Phone 4a in all but the camera department. Even if the Poco climbs back to its apparent £469 post-release price, I’d have no issue recommending it over the Nothing. With a gargantuan two-day battery, ultra-fast 100W charging, wired reverse charging, and absolutely stellar performance, the Poco X8 Pro Max could be one of the best budget phones of the year. It’s really only held back by the lack of a telephoto lens and truly adaptive refresh rates for movie buffs and bookworms. If those quirks don’t bother you, this is an absolute must. And if you want even more performance and a telephoto lens wrapped in a unique denim look, there’s still the (most expensive) Poco F8 Ultra. You won’t find the X8 Pro Max’s massive battery tucked away in those jeans, though.

The Poco X8 Pro Max is also rated IP69K for water and dust resistance. In comparison, the cameras are merely serviceable (there's no telephoto camera, for instance). But then photography isn't the point here, it's the performance. The Poco X8 Pro Max starts from S$589 (S$559 till April 5) for the 256GB version, and is available in three colours: white, black, and blue.

So, should you buy the POCO X8 Pro Max? Honestly, yes. If you want the best performance possible at an unbelievably low price, the POCO X8 Pro Max is the phone that you should get. That MediaTek Dimensity 9500s is still a truly amazing chipset despite a generation old and still using the old but mature CPU and GPU architecture. However, you do have one alternative – the Xiaomi 15T Pro. It’s equipped with the Dimensity 9400+, and the performance is about the same as the POCO X8 Pro Max, has much better cameras and also an optical telephoto camera, but a smaller battery. The price is definitely higher, but I do think the Xiaomi 15T Pro is worth the price premium if you need better cameras. I truly love the performance of the POCO X8 Pro Max. For the price, it’s really a no-brainer even though when there are definitely some shortcomings here and there to make the price possible.

So, after covering all the bases, what do we think about the POCO X8 Pro Max? To put it to perspective, POCO’s X-Series has always been about delivering the best value for money in the sub-Php20,000 price range. The POCO X8 Pro Max seems to be expanding from that, now maximizing flagship-level performance while still potentially having a more competitive pricing. It’s still a POCO X-Series model after all. I wonder what will happen now for the base POCO F8 model…? If it ever comes out that is. However, with the RAM and storage drives soaring in prices, it’s probably safe to assume that the POCO X8 Pro Max or for any new smartphone release for that matter, will all be more expensive from now on. But if POCO is able to keep the prices low for the POCO X8 Series just like what they did with the F8 Series, then it’s gonna be easily one of this year’s most compelling options. Period.

The Poco X8 Pro Max is another excellent-value proposition for those who demand a little more performance from their mid-range phone. As the first Max in the series, it comfortably lives up to its name, offering a big and beautiful display, outsized performance, and epic stamina from a ginormous battery – albeit with a correspondingly inflated price. It’s a shame the cameras didn’t receive a smidgen of this Max love, even if we fully accept that this isn’t traditionally a priority for the Poco brand. The software, too, continues to be a weak point for Poco, as it is for the wider Xiaomi family. Still, if you have less than £500 to spend on your next phone and you want to go as big and fast as possible, buying the Poco X8 Pro Max would be a power move that we fully endorse.

Granted, the camera system is not on par with big and expensive camera phones, even though the main sensor gets the job done. And the lack of wireless charging might be a serious dealbreaker for some. But the stellar battery life, the bright screen, the fast processor, and the overall pleasant design more than make up for the sacrifices Poco made to arrive at the aforementioned price.

While the Poco X8 Pro Max will undoubtedly steal most of the attention, I’d encourage you to not sleep on the regular Poco X8 Pro. It offers a broadly comparable experience for significantly less money, all while catching a lot of its lower-mid-range rivals flat footed.

While the Pro Max model boasted one of the biggest batteries around and some seriously beefy performance, things get downgraded for the cheaper POCO X8 Pro. Not too harshly, however. Sure, the battery life isn't as supreme, but this phone can still survive a pretty long day. Meanwhile gamers get enough grunt to play through hardcore titles, despite the £350 UK starting price. Once again it's pretty basic camera tech slapped on the POCO X8 Pro, but it's good enough to snap your kids and pets for sharing online. Besides the hit-and-miss Hyper OS 3, there's a lot to love here for a mid-range price tag. The Poco X8 Pro has a likable and durable body, an excellent OLED screen with all sorts of perks and high brightness, capable cameras, amazing battery life, and, of course, impressive raw and sustained performance.We expected the selfie camera to be a disappointment, but it turned out rather okay, so we are gladly admitting when we're wrong. We'd still prefer a 50MP AF shooter here, of course, but that's reserved for Xiaomi/s more expensive phones.It was really hard to find fault with anything about the Poco X8 Pro. A telephoto camera would have made this phone a killer offer for sure, but even without it, it's sort of still killing it.The Poco X8 Pro is probably our easiest recommendation for 2026 so far.

Xiaomi:

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

ARM Immortalis-G925 MC11: High-end grafische chip voor smartphones met 11 van de 24 mogelijke kernen. Gebaseerd op de "5th Gen" architectuur (opvolger van Valhall) inclusief Variable Rate Shading (VRS) en Ray Racing.

Mediatek Dimensity 9000:

Dimensity 9500s: Een high-end octa-core SoC voor Android tablets en smartphones met een krachtige Cortex-X925 kern (tot 3,73 GHz), drie Cortex-X4 kernen (tot 3,3 GHz) en vier efficiënte Cortex-A720 kernen (tot 2,4 GHz) samen met de speciale 890 NPU en Immortalis-G925 MC11 iGPU.

Dimensity 8500: De MediaTek Dimensity 8500 werkt met acht ARM Cortex-A725 kernen op basis van een "all-big-core design" dat volledig vertrouwt op prestatiekernen.
