Instead of the reverse-folding prototype we got a peek of a few years ago, the Mi Mix Fold looks remarkably like the Galaxy Z Fold 2. It packs in Xiaomi's premium camera tech, with a 108mp main camera, and most notably, a "liquid lens" 8MP camera. Xiaomi is claiming this uses a fluid-filled lens to shift between a telephoto and macro shooter. Impressive if true, though we'll want to test it. The Mi Mix Fold is debuting at 9,999 yuan, around $1,500, a good deal cheaper than the folding options from other companies, though you may have trouble finding one in the USA.

Xiaomi usually offers close to excellent video recording experience on its flagship smartphones, and it's beyond us what happened for this Mix Fold 2. So, the Mix Fold 2 is a great foldable device and a good smartphone. We are sure it will find fans across China as it is a country where sometimes software means more than hardware, and MIUI has the upper hand. It is not the best foldable, that's for sure, but it is the thinnest one. And our verdict is quite simple - if you like it, you buy it as it's a worthy device. If its imperfections bother you - look elsewhere. But if you don't live in China, or nearby, we can't in good conscience recommend gray importing it - not like we did the Ultra models. Foldables break a lot more often than regular phones. And if this Mix Fold 2 does crack, you will end up with one fancy paperweight with nowhere to service it.

In that situation, most buyers are better off getting the Z Fold 4 or hoping Xiaomi launches this globally later. With that said, however, there are phone enthusiasts who would import this in a heartbeat. A former colleague at XDA imported one. I know two people in Singapore who have. And I would import this too if Xiaomi hadn’t given me access to a review device. But we are a very niche group: foldable enthusiasts. With an overall score of 130, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 delivered a good performance in the DXOMARK Audio tests and showed very noticeable improvements over its predecessor, the Mix Fold 2. The Mix Fold 3 especially shone as a recording device, thanks to a very pleasant timbre and very effective wind noise reduction. Only when recording loud events, such as concerts, did the Xiaomi show some weaknesses. Overall recording results were best with the main camera, but the front camera and memo app were almost on the same level. Playback was not quite on the same high level as the recording results but still decent. Playback quality was very good at high volumes, with very good bass and treble rendition as well as dynamics, but unfortunately the quality dropped at nominal and soft volume levels.

A worthy foldable phone to own, packed with features one would want. The biggest thing stopping us from recommending it outright is that the phone is only in sale in China for now, and there are no official plans to bring it to the Malaysian market. What a pity, as it is a great alternative to the competition here.

That said, some things haven't been addressed yet, like the waterproofing, less than ideal thermals, lackluster video capabilities and software that's not as useful as it could be. The move from an autofocusing ultrawide to a fixed focus one also perplexes us. However, this third generation does bring meaningful upgrades. We're fans of longer reach and we very much appreciate the 5x telephoto, and it's nice that there's a 3.2x unit to bridge the gap too - there haven't been such zoom-focused foldables lately. Tying nicely with the enhanced imaging setup is the new hinge design that adds another layer of usefulness to the form factor.

Xiaomi:

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

Qualcomm Adreno 660:

Qualcomm Adreno 730:

Grafische chip voor smartphones en tablets die geïntegreerd is in de Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. Qualcomm claimt dat deze 30% sneller is dan de Adreno 660 in de Snapdragon 888 SoC. Voor Android zou het eind 2021 een van de snelste grafische kaarten moeten zijn.

Qualcomm Adreno 740:

Grafische chip voor smartphones en tablets die is geïntegreerd in de Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. Qualcomm beweert dat deze 25% sneller is dan de Adreno 730 in de Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 en de eerste benchmarks laten zien dat de GPU de Apple A16 iGPU (voorheen de snelste smartphone GPU) kan verslaan.

Qualcomm Snapdragon:

SD 8+ Gen 1:

High-end SoC voor smartphones die eind 2021 werd geïntroduceerd en geproduceerd werd in 4 nm bij TSMC. Integreert één "Prime Core" op basis van een ARM Cortex-X2-architectuur geklokt op maximaal 3,2 GHz. Drie andere prestatiekernen zijn gebaseerd op de A710 maar klokken tot 2,5 GHz. Verder zijn er vier energiebesparende kernen geïntegreerd die zijn gebaseerd op de ARM Cortex-A510 architectuur en klokken tot 1,8 GHz. Naast de processorkernen integreert de SoC een WiFi 6e modem, een Hexagon DSP (voor AI-versnelling) en een Spectra ISP. De geïntegreerde geheugencontroller ondersteunt snel LPDDR5-geheugen met maximaal 3.200 MHz. 5G is nu opgenomen in de chip met de Snapdragon X65-modem. Vergeleken met de niet-plus versie biedt de 8+ Gen 1 een 200 MHz hoger geklokte Prime Core en een 10% hoger geklokte GPU. Bovendien wordt hij nu geproduceerd bij TSMC en niet meer bij Samsung.

SD 8 Gen 2:

High-end SoC voor smartphones die eind 2022 werd geïntroduceerd met een snelle hoofdkern op basis van een ARM Cortex-X3-architectuur die draait op maximaal 3,2 GHz. Twee andere krachtige kernen zijn gebaseerd op de A715 en ondersteunen ook alleen 64-bit toepassingen. De andere twee A710-kernen ondersteunen ook 32-bits toepassingen, net als de energiebesparende Cortex-A510-kernen. Naast de processorkernen bevat de SoC een WiFi 7-modem, een Hexagon DSP (voor AI-versnelling) en een Spectra ISP. De geïntegreerde geheugencontroller ondersteunt snel LPDDR5x-geheugen tot 4200 MHz. 5G is opgenomen in de chip met de Snapdragon X70 modem.
