Je merkt het in deze review, OnePlus doet echt enorm veel, enorm goed. Het scharnier is echt geweldig. De verhouding van het scherm is goed voor multitasken en lekker ruim voor entertainment. De camera’s zijn geweldig en de accuduur is ook echt prima. Het is jammer dat het toestel nog niet waterdicht is, maar we missen echt de mogelijkheid om het toestel draadloos op te laden. Dat is echt een gemis.

OnePlus Open voelt als een zeer complete, mooi vormgegeven smartphone, maar tegelijkertijd is het daarom zo’n vreemde keuze dat er voor zo’n groot camera-eiland is gekozen. Het is echt een beetje teveel van het goede, hoewel de camera’s zelf wel goede prestaties leveren. Het toestel zelf is charmant en slank in een mooie groene uitvoering, waarbij het ook nog eens razendsnel kan opladen en een enorme kleurenpracht toont op de schermen. We zijn dan ook zeker onder de indruk van OnePlus Open. Wat echter een tegenvaller is, dat is dat prijskaartje. 1800 euro voor een smartphone vinden we erg veel geld en hoe spannend deze vormfactor ook is, ik denk dat OnePlus te weinig nieuws brengt met OnePlus Open om die hoge prijs te rechtvaardigen. Ja, het is een toestel met een luxe uitstraling en goede specificaties, maar er zijn nog steeds minpunten die meewegen en die zorgen ervoor dat dit toestel wat ons betreft wel degelijk een paar honderd euro te veel kost.

Onderaan de streep zijn we erg enthousiast over de OnePlus Open. Misschien nog wel enthousiaster dan over de Z Fold 5, omdat dit technisch gezien OnePlus’ eerste poging is. Het toestel voldoet aan allerlei voorwaarden op het gebied van ontwerp, snelheid, hardware, software en camera’s. Wat dat betreft is het fijn om te weten dat je niet alleen geld uitgeeft aan het vouwmechanisme als je de OnePlus Open in huis haalt. Je betaalt daadwerkelijk voor een high-end smartphone-ervaring, die op dit moment heel weinig concurrentie heeft. Maar dan rest nog de vraag: hoe goed is goed genoeg? Foldables worden voornamelijk omarmd door powerusers en early adopters. Met prijzen van minimaal 1.799 euro is het ook niet zo dat de Open voor Jan en alleman bereikbaar is. Daarnaast maakt het vouwtoestel een hoop dingen gemakkelijk en leuk, maar we zijn er nog niet van overtuigd dat de ervaring per se beter is dan die van platte smartphones. Dat neemt niet weg dat de foldable de laatste vijf jaar grote stappen heeft gezet, en de OnePlus Open is daar het beste voorbeeld van.

Despite my love for the OnePlus Open, it’s still tough to recommend it, mainly due to the price. This is a $1,699 phone at the end of the day. And while it does a lot of things right, not everyone can afford to or wants to spend that much on a phone. And I completely understand. Of course, part of what makes this tough for OnePlus is that it is not going to be available on carriers (it does work on all three US carriers, though). So customers won’t be able to take advantage of the crazy trade-in deals that some carriers tend to offer. At the end of the day, the decision is up to you. And if you’ve been thinking about getting foldable, there’s no better option than the OnePlus Open as your first foldable experience. And that’s because OnePlus was able to sit back and see all the mistakes that other companies did with their early foldable devices, Samsung is on their fifth-generation foldable, and they are pretty far behind the OnePlus Open right now, surprisingly.

Would I choose him? If I were to buy an opening phone, I would think very carefully and I would be in quite a dilemma, because there are more and more of these phones on the market and I can honestly tell you that I have a dilemma. I think it's a solid foldable and a very successful debut in a new segment for OnePlus. If you ask me whether I recommend this smartphone, I will say this: if you like it and can afford it, go ahead and buy it, because it is a very nice device that I can recommend with full confidence. This is one of those phones I wish I had. I hope that the next foldable models will be at least as good or even better than this one.

Having used most foldable phones in existence, it's clear to me that the OnePlus Open is hands-down the best one you can buy right now. That's thanks to a folding mechanism that's simply far smoother than the competition, revealing a main screen that has the mildest 'crease' of any foldable you'll see. It's impressive. At the same time, however, because the front display of the OnePlus Fold is so similar to a flagship phone, and the design of the device isn't a million miles away from that either, it's often meant that I simply don't unfold the main display hidden within. When I do, that near-square aspect ratio isn't practical for a huge number of things in my view. Plus I'd prefer some OxygenOS tweaks for an even better general experience. Despite my preferences, however, OnePlus' first foray into the foldables market (at this phone-meets-tablet scale anyway) is undeniably a major success. The Open doesn't compromise in any one department compared to its key competition, making for an experience that, right now, can't be rivalled.

Its design is beautifully balanced, with a highly usable external display and an inner screen with a minimal crease. Meanwhile, the camera system is far from the weak point it often is on foldable phones. In fact, it’s downright good. The cherry on the cake is OnePlus’ well-executed software, which makes it easy to run apps side by side or in floating windows on that big, beautiful inner screen. All this in a package that costs hundreds less than the competition. It’s not perfect by any means. The body could still stand to be slimmer and lighter, like the Honor Magic V2, while the Open is missing basic flagship features like wireless charging and a strong IP rating. Even so, the OnePlus Open stands as one of the best foldables around.

The OnePlus Open, the first foldable device from OnePlus, showed an impressive performance in our display testing, with strong results in readability, color, and artifacts. The OnePlus Open’s readability was among the best we have seen so far, scoring near the top of the readability attribute. Color was also a high-performing attribute, coming close to a high score. Both attributes contributed to a generally pleasant experience when viewing photos or browsing the web. Although the screen showed good brightness in indoor conditions, when it came to watching HDR videos, the screen lacked brightness and details, detracting from a pleasant experience. One of the challenging aspects of a foldable screen for manufacturers is de-emphasizing the presence of the middle crease when the phone is unfolded. But the OnePlus Open surprised us in this respect. We evaluated the device unfolded and found the Flexi-fluid AMOLED screen’s crease to be barely visible.

The OnePlus Open is a really nice folding phone, and shows that you don’t have to buy a Samsung to get a premium experience. There’s a great set of rear cameras, with good results from the ultra-wide, great results from the main camera, and really good results from the telephoto camera. In terms of down-sides, the ultra-wide angle camera is perhaps one where I would have liked to see sharper images, as results can look soft at times. In addition the lack of wireless charging is an odd omission on a flagship phone at this price point. The next generation of camera phones are on their way, and the iQOO 12, Vivo X100 Pro, and Oppo Find X7 Ultra all looking to take smartphone cameras to the next level, with non-folding phones still looking like they’ll have an advantage over folding phones.

Of course, this thing doesn’t come cheap. Although OnePlus has undercut its Samsung alternative by a pretty significant margin. And by all means, I’m not saying this is perfect or anything either. But if the OnePlus Open isn’t enough to convince you to switch to a foldable phone, I don’t see what will. At least for now.

The Open has little to no compromises made when compared to regular premium flagship smartphones. And that itself speaks volumes about how much OnePlus has distanced itself from Samsung. The OnePlus Open offers a high-resolution cover display which can be used like a regular smartphone, a large foldable display with well-optimised software, the same level of performance that's expected from an ultra-premium flagship and for once quality cameras on a foldable. Apart from offering better displays, better cameras (on paper), faster charging and better battery life, it's also priced lower than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5 (Review). What's not to like?

With an overall score of 135, the OnePlus Open delivered a good performance in the DXOMARK Audio tests. Thanks to an additional speaker, it is one of very few foldable phones that offer stereo rendition in portrait orientation while unfolded, making better use of its design and large dimensions and providing better immersivity than most competitors. In our tests, the OnePlus was consistently good across all use cases, thanks to a very pleasant timbre in both playback and recording. Our testers liked the device’s effective audio zoom feature, but also noticed some flaws such as a lack of high-end extension, a sometimes overzealous dynamics processing and compression in both playback and recording. According to the measurements, neither the built-in speakers nor the microphones offer a full frequency range, which is unusual for a device in this class. However, this did not prevent the OnePlus from delivering a satisfying timbre, and a solid performance in our tests.

The OnePlus Open is extremely slim, compact and handy, looks premium and solid, has an eye-grabbing foldable design, and is incredibly cool to carry around. The large display adds a wow factor and immediately catches the attention. It also has Hasselblad cameras which perform brilliantly and offer superior camera performance. We got some incredible camera results from the main camera, remarkable wide-angle shots, and great telephoto zoomed shots. The OnePlus Open is also an excellent performer in terms of processing power, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is a high-end Soc that can accomplish tasks lightning fast and play games at maximum. The performance is top-notch, plus it has Dolby stereo speakers with Spatial Sound adding to the multimedia experience.

I’ve had no issues toting the Open through a long day, taking it off the charger when I wake up around 8 AM, and not reaching for the included 67W block until sometime the following day. My usage is a reliable mix, as mentioned above, but I pushed the Open for easily more than six hours of screen-on time between charges. Granted, I tend to default to the cover display and only use the internal panel when I need to, so my results are probably better than what you’d experience if you prefer to use the foldable’s full real estate. When you need a pick-me-up, the OnePlus Open offers a mixed bag.

The OnePlus Open is a fantastic foldable in many ways, but it doesn’t quite give the book-style device mainstream appeal yet. The big barrier remains the price, unless you can get a more affordable contract deal once it goes on sale (not guaranteed). Battery life is mediocre and some third-party apps aren’t optimised for the internal display, but there’s still so much to like here if you do want to jump feet first into the world of book-foldables. Performance from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip is superb, even though it’s no longer the latest and greatest, and both the displays are fantastic to use in most scenarios. Then there are the cameras, with the main, ultrawide and telephoto all impressive across a range of scenarios. You also get great speakers and a 67W fast charger in the box. Considering this is a first-gen device, OnePlus has done an excellent job. But it remains a foldable that only tech enthusiasts should seriously consider… for now.

The OnePlus Open is the best foldable tablet-sized smartphone we’ve ever tested. There’s no one above and no one below. Although this portrait of a cardboard figure was taken in poor lighting, the exposure is appropriate and there is almost no image noise. Firstly, the OnePlus Open can be used as a normal mobile phone because the front display has the same format as many regular smartphones. Think about how often you take your mobile phone out of your pocket to check this or that. With OnePlus Open, you get an ordinary user experience, making the unfolded display an added luxury and not an annoyance because you have to open it all the time, as is the case with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold models, for example. Yes, they also have a front display, but it’s too narrow and limits usability. On top of that, by all other parameters – construction, design, image quality, sound, camera and performance – the OnePlus Open just oozes quality. This is a smartphone from the very top shelf.

The pricing makes sense considering the multiple displays and the potent Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. The same CPU and storage on a Z Fold 5 will run you nearly $2,000, and you only get 12GB of RAM. The Pixel Fold is powered by Google’s solid Tensor G2, 12GB of RAM, and 512GB will also run you over $1,900. I'm saying it with my whole chest, the OnePlus Open is the king of foldables in the U.S. Many other foldables are not available in the US we have heard are excellent but aren’t allowed to get our hands on. OnePlus knocked this out of the park, as the Open is the best foldable you can buy, and it will hurt your wallet less, too.

OnePlus Open review: A no-compromise foldable phone

Looking at the entire package here on offer from OnePlus - and assuming the fingerprint sensor is just an unlucky experience with a faulty unit - the OnePlus Open is the foldable phone to beat right now. At least when it comes to the larger book-style models.Sure, Samsung has it beat when it comes to additional software features, S Pen compatibility, wireless charging and waterproofing, but as an experience, the OnePlus Open is an absolute joy to use. The outer display is really useful and doesn't feel compromised in any way. The internal display is probably the best large folding display on any phone at the time of writing, and the Open Canvas solution to multitasking is a game-changer. Plus, we finally have excellent cameras and great battery life in a foldable that also has (mostly) bloat-free software AND long-term update support. Oh, and it has fast charging. Still, the OnePlus Open is probably the best value among all foldable phones available in the US.

The biggest win is a cover screen that's just the right size, and the cameras are the best you'll find on a foldable. To its credit, OnePlus has a lot of nifty multitasking features, but the software is where the Open falters; it just isn't refined, you miss out on basic features, and there are enough issues out of the box that I'd suggest waiting a few weeks (or months) to see if these are sufficiently rectified.

Unless you’re really into the idea of having a foldable, it’s probably better to just go with the $699 OnePlus 11 — which, again, has a higher Geekbench score than the Open does. But despite minor concerns about performance and a lack of wireless charging, OnePlus Open works as advertised. I don’t think it’s as good as the Z Fold 5, and I might even take the Pixel Fold over it because of Google’s excellent photography software. That doesn’t make it a bad phone at all, though. In the end, it’s just alright. But if a flagship foldable from a lesser-known company can come out just alright, then foldables just might be here to stay.

The foldable landscape in India has seen a massive shift in 2023. This segment was once dominated by only one major player, but now, it is brimming with activity across the globe. For OnePlus’ first attempt at a foldable, the OnePlus Open is a solid device. It’s a great size when folded and unfolded, and it’s definitely one of the most lightweight foldables on the market thanks to the materials used, which include titanium. If you’ve been bothered by the heavy weight of foldables in general, the OnePlus Open may change your mind. The displays on the OnePlus Open are excellent, and both look great in use. The 6.31-inch cover display is similar to a standard smartphone size, making it very usable without any compromises. And with the antireflective layer on the inner display, it’s much more usable than other foldables, such as the Google Pixel Fold with its super-reflective inner display. This antireflective layer also helps reduce the visibility of the crease as well. And the overall design of the OnePlus Open is definitely eye-catching. Emerald Dusk is a beautiful green color that shimmers nicely, and the Hasselblad camera array makes the phone stand out from the crowd.

When I first heard OnePlus was making a foldable phone, I wasn’t sure what their goal was. The company hasn’t been in the business of making flagship killers for a while. The two dedicated selfie cameras are average at best, the cover selfie cam has some haziness, too. But we don't see these used for actual selfies, their main purpose should be video calls anyway. Finally, the OxygenOS 13 is incredibly feature-rich and highly customizable, while the foldable-exclusive Open Canvas multi-tasking is super clever once you get the gist of it. Flip-style foldables are also available: The Motorola Razr+ and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 (both $999) are excellent folding alternatives if you'd prefer a normal-size handset that folds in half to better fit your pocket (and budget). With that in mind, the OnePlus Open is a strong alternative to all of the above. The hardware is well-designed and built, with a strong hinge and gorgeous displays inside and out. The software represents a new way to interact with foldables and the performance is smooth no matter what you need to do. Battery life and wireless connectivity are on par with the competition, but photo and video quality aren't quite there yet.

The OnePlus Open is a fantastic foldable in many ways, but it doesn’t quite give the book-style device mainstream appeal yet. The big barrier remains the price, unless you can get a more affordable contract deal once it goes on sale (not guaranteed). Battery life is mediocre and some third-party apps aren’t optimised for the internal display, but there’s still so much to like here if you do want to jump feet first into the world of book-foldables. Performance from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip is superb even though it will soon be the previous generation, and both the displays are fantastic to use in most scenarios. Then there are the cameras, with the main, ultrawide and telephoto all impressive across a range of scenarios. You also get great speakers and a 67W fast charger in the box. Considering this is a first-gen device, OnePlus has done an excellent job. But it remains a foldable that only tech enthusiasts should seriously consider… for now.

Considering that this is the company’s first attempt at a foldable phone, OnePlus hit the mark with a premium design that feels and looks more polished than the Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 5. There’s no denying that OnePlus locked down a premium design, but I think it’s even more important to stress how it perfected the multitasking experience with Open Canvas. Fundamentally it’s very similar to what Google and Samsung implements in its foldables, but the extra step of how the screen dynamically adapts to fit three apps simultaneously is impressive. The OnePlus Open is not without its shortcomings — like the camera’s weak low light performance — but I think the combination of the device's lower price, long battery life, fast recharge time, and premium design makes up a lot of ground for it.

The OnePlus Open is the no-compromise book-style foldable that the industry has been waiting for. It sports a clean, premium design with a smartphone-first 6.3-inch 20:9 120Hz AMOLED cover display that feels normal to use. However, it’s the inner 7.82-inch 120Hz AMOLED panel that steals the show, with a near-invisible crease that’s only notable when looking at it side-on. Compared to the deep creases from Google and Samsung, it’s a huge step forward. There’s also the camera setup that uses three custom high-res lenses designed for foldables that deliver a notable boost in overall performance compared to options from Samsung, possibly even giving the Google Pixel Fold a run for its money. Granted, it’s not the lightest or thinnest foldable – that goes to the Honor Magic V2, which is yet to get a European launch – and it’s not quite as protected as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 with IPX4 water resistance, but it does so much so well that it’s truly hard to fault, especially when it’s much cheaper than most of the foldable competition.

This means anyone can get one for $2,099, but when the OnePlus 11 is half the price and just as good in a lot of respects, but it doesn’t fold, it’s a hard sell. If you just want to mess about with great folding phone hardware, you’ll enjoy the OnePlus Open. But if you consider yourself an average user who’s looking for a phone to live with over the next four years, I’d recommend looking at a Pixel instead.

When we compare the OnePlus Open to its main competitors in the market, it's evident that the device surpasses many of them in various aspects. But is it the best foldable device available? The OnePlus Open boasts a different form factor than the Google Pixel Fold, aligning more with the design of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Like Samsung, it operates on the Android OS but introduces its exclusive skin. In contrast, the Pixel Fold provides a more "pure" Android experience. In the realm of fast charging technologies, OnePlus clearly leads with its quicker solution. The introduction of the new desktop taskbar, along with the 'Recent fold' and OnePlus Canvas features, certainly amplifies multitasking capabilities for this foldable device. Most notably, it stands as a genuinely compact 2-in-1 device, ensuring a seamless user experience whether open or closed. In the photography department, OnePlus seems to have the edge with its impressive Hasselblad 48 MP main camera system.

Even with non-final software, the OnePlus Open is a strong contender for best phone of 2023, though that's not to say there aren't two or three caveats to consider. The first is that the camera is the best set of cameras you can buy on a foldable, which is great, but nighttime videography is not amazing. Then there's the lack of wireless charging, and while OnePlus' wired charging may be speedy, a device claiming to be a flagship can't afford such an obvious omission on its spec sheet.  Finally, this is a Gen 1 product and regardless of how impressive, well-built, and thoroughly tested it is, you have to question whether or not this hardware will actually hold up under scrutiny. Foldables are delicate enough by themselves, but coming from a company that has never sold, nor supported a foldable has to give even the most confident buyer some pause. Beyond those caveats, though, there's little to complain about.

I think the best thing the OnePlus Open can do is push Samsung and Google to more aggressive innovation on their phones. We don’t need to imagine what a foldable might look like if it occupied the middle ground between the Galaxy and Pixel foldable designs.

This is my new favourite foldable phone thanks to the slick software and that OnePlus Open hardware. It's not as skinny as the Honor Magic V2 but it matches or beats the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 in almost every area. First up, this is some of the best camera tech on any bendy smartphone in 2023. The OnePlus Open shows only slight saturation in brighter conditions and can cope with HDR issues, while the night photography is also decent. Video capture and telephoto shooting both get a thumbs up too. The OnePlus Open is also one of the best foldable phones for battery life. This thing can last you all day even with quite a bit of camera action, and performance is good enough for gaming. But hey, it's the OxygenOS software that really sells this smartphone.

Qualcomm Adreno 740:

Grafische chip voor smartphones en tablets die is geïntegreerd in de Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. Qualcomm beweert dat deze 25% sneller is dan de Adreno 730 in de Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 en de eerste benchmarks laten zien dat de GPU de Apple A16 iGPU (voorheen de snelste smartphone GPU) kan verslaan. 

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

SD 8 Gen 2:

High-end SoC voor smartphones die eind 2022 werd geïntroduceerd met een snelle hoofdkern op basis van een ARM Cortex-X3-architectuur die draait op maximaal 3,2 GHz. Twee andere krachtige kernen zijn gebaseerd op de A715 en ondersteunen ook alleen 64-bit toepassingen. De andere twee A710-kernen ondersteunen ook 32-bits toepassingen, net als de energiebesparende Cortex-A510-kernen. Naast de processorkernen bevat de SoC een WiFi 7-modem, een Hexagon DSP (voor AI-versnelling) en een Spectra ISP. De geïntegreerde geheugencontroller ondersteunt snel LPDDR5x-geheugen tot 4200 MHz. 5G is opgenomen in de chip met de Snapdragon X70 modem.

7.82": Dit schermformaat bevindt zich op de grens tussen tablets en smartphones. De meeste tablets hebben grotere schermdiagonalen maar er zijn ook heel wat smartphones met een dergelijk groot scherm.

Grote schermformaten laten hogere resoluties toe. Details zoals letters zijn groter. Anderzijds is het energieverbruik lager bij kleine schermdiagonalen en de toestellen zijn kleiner, lichter en goedkoper.
