Tricky one this. There’s no denying it, this is an excellent phone when it comes to the cameras, the screen and the GUI. It’s a different form-factor, that’s for sure, but I’m not going to berate them too much for that as there’ll definitely be lots of you out there who will love the tall and almost remote-control-like appearance of this device. However, what I will say is that, in this world of “all screen” phone frontages and multiple use cases, it’s a hard sell for Sony to say, “We’re doing this complete letterbox design because that’s how movies are formatted”. Sure, movies look great on the phone and there’s no black bars, but what about for the rest of the time, when your thumb doesn’t reach high enough and you have to employ one of those work-arounds that Sony has put in place to let you use the phone with one-hand?

The 21:9 aspect ratio makes them unique, but I don’t know if it’s enough to make you want to choose these over others in the market. If you were to go with one of these, I’d choose the Xperia 10 Plus over the smaller sibling mainly due to the slightly better specs, larger screen, and better cameras. I really see no reason why the smaller Xperia 10 exists to be honest.

Sony's Xperia 10 II is een beetje eigenzinnig, zoals we ook gewend zijn van het bedrijf. De telefoon pakt uit met Corning Gorilla Glass 6-bescherming en een IP68-waterbestendigheidscertificaat, maar anderzijds heeft hij een plastic frame en een chipset die minder sterk is dan je verwacht van een telefoon die 369 euro kost. De OnePlus Nord heeft bijvoorbeeld een Snapdragon 765G-chipset en een stevigere portie RAM wat garant staat voor snellere prestaties en ondersteuning voor 5G.

De Sony Xperia 10 II is vooral het overwegen waard als je op zoek bent naar een betaalbare, relatief compacte smartphone die tegen water en stof kan. Het toestel heeft geen duidelijke minpunten en presteert op alle vlakken prima. Voor dit geld had ik echter wel een snellere processor en krachtigere stekker verwacht. Concurrerende telefoons als de Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G en Motorola Moto G 5G Plus bieden betere specificaties en 5G-connectiviteit voor hetzelfde geld, maar zijn groter en niet water- en stofdicht.

Met de Sony Xperia 10 II levert Sony eigenlijk een fijn toestel af. Toegegeven, qua specs kun je voor hetzelfde bedrag ‘meer telefoon’ krijgen; je betaalt natuurlijk ook voor de merknaam Sony. De camera presteert prima, de software is ontdaan van allerlei onnodige toevoegingen (en heeft zelfs de bekende éénhandige modus) en de beste eigenschap is ongetwijfeld dat grote oled-scherm. Combineer dat met het feit dat het toestel lekker in de hand ligt en je houdt een prima smartphone over — die je waarschijnlijk – net als wij – net even te duurt vindt.

De markt voor telefoons van ongeveer 400 euro is moordend. Fabrikanten troeven elkaar af met allerlei toevoegingen of door juist kernervaringen aan te bieden. Sony zet dezelfde lijn voort als met de vorige Xperia-toestellen en itereert prima op verschillende vlakken. Daarnaast is de plaatsing van de vingerafdrukscanner niet ideaal, is de processor niet ontzettend krachtig en stelt de speaker een klein beetje teleur. Sony: Sony Corporation is een van de grootste Japanse elektronicabedrijven. Het bedrijf werd in 1946 opgericht onder een andere naam en produceerde aanvankelijk rijstkokers. Het bedrijf lanceerde de eerste transistorradio. In 1958 werd het bedrijf omgedoopt tot Sony. Sony is een combinatie van het Latijnse woord sonus (geluid) en het Engelse woord sonny (kleine jongen). Tegenwoordig is de core business consumentenelektronica. Het bedrijf houdt zich bezig met de ontwikkeling, het ontwerp, de fabricage en de verkoop van elektronische apparatuur, instrumenten, apparaten, gameconsoles en software. Sony is actief in de volgende segmenten: gaming- en netwerkdiensten, muziek, afbeeldingen, home entertainment en geluid, beeldproducten en -oplossingen, mobiele communicatie, halfgeleiders, financiële diensten en andere.

Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.
