Vorig jaar bewees Oppo met de Find X2 Pro een uitstekende high-end smartphone te kunnen maken en mee te doen in de top van de smartphonemarkt. De Find X3 Pro zet die lijn voort, en is op veel vlakken een van de meest indrukwekkende smartphones van dit moment. Het scherm is prachtig, het ontwerp indrukwekkend en de camera’s bijzonder goed. Bovendien kan de smartphone snel draadloos laden, is hij waterdicht, presteert hij uitstekend en is de softwareschil van Oppo fijn. Toch is de fabrikant er – zeker voor de zakelijke gebruiker – nog niet helemaal. De microscoopcamera is een leuke toevoeging, maar voor zijn prijskaartje van 1149 euro mist de Oppo Find X3 Pro toch nog net dat beetje extra.

Of de microscoopcamera een blijvertje is, betwijfel ik. Een toffe innovatie is het zeker. Het toestle is heerlijk dun en heeft een fantastisch display. De Oppo Find X3 Pro imponeert met zijn fraaie ontwerp, prachtige scherm en krachtige hardware. Opladen gaat bovendien vliegensvlug, de primaire en groothoekcamera zijn erg goed en de microscooplens is een toffe innovatie. De smartphone laat echter ook steken vallen. Zo is de accuduur wisselvallig en ondergemiddeld, is de zoomcamera beperkt en krijgt de software maar twee jaar updates. En hoewel Oppo hoog van de toren blaast over de revolutionaire microscoopcamera, vraag ik mij vooral af hoe vaak je ‘m gaat gebruiken. Onder de streep is de Oppo Find X3 Pro een erg goede smartphone, maar vanwege zijn aandachtspunten en opvallend hoge adviesprijs (1149 euro) geen blinde aanrader. Zo vind ik de vergelijkbare OnePlus 9 Pro een fijnere telefoon, en die start bij 899 euro. De Xiaomi Mi 11, Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra en Apple iPhone 12 zijn andere interessante alternatieven.

De Oppo Find X3 Pro kunnen we iedereen aanraden. Het scherm is top, de beide primaire camera’s zijn fantastisch, de microscoopcamera meer dan een gimmick en de snelle hardware zorgt voor krachtige prestaties. Toch zijn er enkele minpunten te noemen. Deze zijn waarschijnlijk niet voor iedereen van evenveel waarde, maar wel belangrijk om te benoemen. Het design is een kwestie van smaak, maar de voorganger wist hier beter te overtuigen. Daarnaast mist de periscoopcamera van de voorganger en daardoor zijn de zoommogelijkheden op dit toestel beperkter. Oppo ondersteunt het toestel sowieso met twee grote updates en twee jaar aan beveiligingsupdates, maar daarna blijft het wat vaag. Ten derde de prijs. Voor 1.149 euro krijg je een toptoestel in handen, maar je moet wel een flinke portemonnee hebben. Daar krijg je echter wel één van de beste smartphones van dit moment voor terug.

Oppo’s 2021 flagship didn’t come cheap at launch, retailing for a rather pricey €1,149 at first. The phone has been on sale for €100 to €200 cheaper on the likes of Amazon, but it’s still evidently priced as a premium flagship. Fortunately, it still brings plenty of premium extras, such as fast wired/wireless charging, a top-notch OLED screen, and a unique, water-resistant design. It’s not a total hit though, as that microscope camera is fun but clearly in need of improving, while the lack of a periscope camera is particularly disappointing given that rival devices offer this or even two telephoto cameras.

The main thing I’m left wondering about is the price-tag. As good as this phone is, I think £1099 is a lot to ask of UK buyers, particularly when Oppo doesn’t have the same brand recognition as Samsung on these shores. The S21 Ultra, for instance, is similarly specced-out and is also very similarly priced on Amazon right now. Oppo has clearly tried to give itself a differentiating factor with its microlens camera, but personally I wouldn’t see it swaying me one way or the other. It’s a really cool feature for sure, but at the end of the day the novelty does wear off and you find yourself using it less and less. At least, that was the case for me. Regardless, Oppo has made a highly impressive flagship with the Find X3 Pro and I think the company will have a lot to say in the flagship Android smartphone conversation going forward. Ultimately I think the high price may just prevent this phone getting into as many pockets as it might otherwise have, but it’s still an excellent choice that does little wrong.

The sole bright spot was volume: the Find X3 Pro is loud enough and it’s intelligible at minimum volume. As a recording device, the Oppo Find X3 Pro fares much better, comparing well with other ultra-premium devices and with its brand forerunner. It produced good tonal balance overall, good dynamics, and also did well in the spatial attribute, with good wideness in life video and the meeting use case. The loudness in life video was also a strong point. In both video apps, overall sound is slightly muffled with a lack of treble and prominent low midrange. In many use cases, dynamics were impacted by some strange compression behavior, especially in the high SPL scenario.

The Oppo Find X3 Pro measures up well against the competition for the most part, scoring well in readability (which is ultimately the most important measure of utility for a smartphone display) but also earning praise for its smooth touch, which made the experience of using it a pleasure. Lighting transitions were well managed overall, and the device does a good job of adapting to the color space of visual content, thus increasing fidelity. On the downside, it could be a bit brighter when used outside and in direct sunlight. And the Find X3 Pro has some shortcomings when it comes to video playback with HDR10 content. It’s not bright enough, and there are problems with the management of contrast and color that do affect the viewing experience.
