Considering that this is the first flagship portable to come with this AMD and Microsoft collaboration, it was supposed to show what a non-Intel powered laptop can do. Unfortunately, this notebook is not much of a change. Its performance won’t impress anyone though it does come with refinements in power efficiency. In fact, it doesn’t stand out much from the pack other than its stellar battery life, the best this line has seen. Owners of older Microsoft Surface Laptops might wonder whether to make the upgrade to this model. Well, that depends on what you need from your upgrade. It makes sense to get the 3 if you’re happy with amazing battery life and a larger screen. But, if you need better performance, there are other places to look, most notably its successor, the Surface Laptop 4. If you are interested in the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3, you should be able to find some good deals on it.

Honestly, we wish Microsoft did more with the Surface app that it bundled with Surface devices. Somewhat surprisingly, Microsoft didn’t load up the Surface Laptop 3 with too much extraneous crapware, although worthless apps like Farm Heroes Saga make an appearance. Honestly, we wish Microsoft did more with the Surface app that it bundled with Surface devices. While it provides a nice summary of the system specs and provides basic configuration options for the Surface Pen (sold separately), it would be welcome to see something a bit more comprehensive.

Despite a handful of shortcomings, the Surface Laptop 2 was one of our favourite devices of last year, thanks to a sleek design and capable performance. The third entry in the series has addressed the main niggles that we had, and aside from lacklustre performance in the Core i5 model, there’s really not much at all to complain about. As far as do-it-all business laptops go, the Surface Laptop 3 is one of the better examples we’ve seen. Portable, well-built and decently powerful at the top end, the Surface Laptop has surpassed the MacBook Air and is now on track to challenge the MacBook Pro.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 seems painfully plain on paper. There's no second screen, no graphics card, no hybrid hinge, and even no fingerprint scanner. But Microsoft has put so much attention to detail into every part that matters, this ends up one of the best Windows laptops at any price.

Finally, as this is a Surface device, numerous weird bugs have come and gone throughout my testing period. I’ve already mentioned the display auto brightness bug, but I’ve also seen aggressive battery drain, fans ramping to 100 percent while charging, and the trackpad randomly stop scrolling in apps. Most of these bugs go away after fully shutting down the laptop and restarting it, but they are all frustrating things to experience in the first week of using a brand-new laptop. Microsoft typically does update its Surface devices with bug fixes and patches on a regular basis, so hopefully things will have settled down a few months from now, but right now, the Laptop 3’s experience can be hit-or-miss.

Overall, this is an expected upgrade but one Surface Laptop fans will appreciate. One of the best Windows 10 alternatives to the MacBook Air and Pro 13, though the likes of the Dell XPS 13 also do a good job at filling that spot. The Surface Laptop 3 15 is a proper MacBook Pro rival and a top addition to the Surface family; a few more ports and an SD card reader would have been ideal though, mind you, not in keeping with the clean aesthetic Microsft is going for.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 for Business that we tested today runs $1,599 shipped as it has the double the RAM and SSD size over the base model and may be worth the extra cash as 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD seems a must on premium devices as we enter 2020.

De derde generatie Surface Laptop heeft een snellere gpu en cpu, dankzij de Intel Ice Lake-processor. Je kunt de behuizing bovendien voor het eerst zelf openmaken, waardoor je de ssd kunt vervangen. De accuduur is er wel wat op achteruitgegaan en tijdens browsen halen we geen 11 uur meer, maar een krappe 9,5 uur. Er is ook een usb-c-aansluiting toegevoegd, maar die ondersteunt geen Thunderbolt, en een kaartlezer en hdmi-aansluiting missen we ook. De prijs is hoog, zeker gezien de geboden hardware. Aan de andere kant krijg je dan wel een erg mooi afgewerkte laptop met een prima scherm.

No two ways about it, the Surface Laptop 3 (13.5in) is an exceptionally good laptop. It's very light, slim and good looking, with performance across the board that’s a match for the best in the business. It's more practical than previous models, with non-Alcantara options that won’t get grubby, and a good spread of specifications means you can choose a model that suits your requirements and not pay more than you need to. As with most products, there is the odd area of weakness. It's high time Microsoft moved to wide-gamut displays on its hardware and, ideally, I'd have liked to see a Thunderbolt 3-equipped USB Type-C port, rather than plain old USB 3. It's also a touch disappointing that Microsoft has provided only one Type-C port. But these are relatively small complaints. If you want a laptop for work and, maybe, a little play, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 is a brilliant option with very few significant shortcomings.

De nieuwe aluminium behuizing voelt stijlvoller, sterker, soepeler en duurzamer aan dan de Alcantara-versies waarmee Microsoft ons om de oren slaat sinds de originele Surface Laptop. Als Microsoft wat extra poorten zou kunnen integreren, hebben we hier misschien te maken met een winnaar.

Although all of that speaks well of the panel, there is something that represents it even better – the color accuracy. By default, the display is pretty color accurate, however, when you apply our Gaming and Web design profile, the Average dE drops to just 0.8, which makes it one of the most color-accurate displays we’ve had in our office.

By default, the display is pretty color accurate, however, when you apply our Gaming and Web design profile, the Average dE drops to just 0.8, which makes it one of the most color-accurate displays we’ve had in our office.

Microsoft:

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.
