De 15-inch Katana is slechts licht vernieuwd en wordt geleverd met een nieuwe grafische kaart uit de RTX 40xx-serie. In tegenstelling tot veel concurrenten combineert MSI de nieuwe GPU met een Gen12 in plaats van een Gen13 CPU van Intel. De verkoopprijs van US$1.499,99 als "budget" prijskaartje is nogal fors. Is de Katana nog steeds de moeite waard?

EN→NLThe Katana is far from a perfect machine or the golden ideal of laptop gestalt. It is, however, priced very appropriately for what's on offer. While the Walmart website (the primary and perhaps only retailer for the model I tested in the US) lists the MSRP at $1,200, the actual price has been frozen at $999 since launch. In fact, according to price tracker aislegopher.com, it was originally listed at $999 MSRP, with the new higher MSRP and "sale" price being recent additions. It's a good thing, too, because at $1,200, I'd look askance at this machine. For that price, your options begin to get a bit wider, and the competition fiercer. But at the sub-$1,000 mark, the Katana has far fewer reasonably-specced competitors. It's also worth noting that the Katana comes in a number of other configs, including those with better processors, more RAM, additional storage or up to an RTX 5070 GPU.

EN→NLFor entry-level shoppers, the MSI Katana 15 HX gives gamers most of what they need. A larger SSD would be better, but that’s how the cost quickly rises away from the $1,000 mark. That’s its biggest limitation, though the chunkier plastic body and dim screen are also worth noting. The biggest offset to all that? The RTX 5050 GPU serves up quite a bit of gaming performance for the price, though, as we see more laptops with the lower-tier RTX 5050 and 5060 GPUs roll out, that won’t be unique to the Katana. Despite all that, the Katana hits the main marks for a budget gaming laptop. The battery life is decent, the inputs are comfortable, the ports are plentiful, and the parts generate potent mainstream computing performance.

EN→NLIf you want the best frame rates for the lowest price, then it's a solid pick. But you'll need to live with some budget touches, the worst of which is the dim display. If you can extend your gaming laptop budget from $1,000 to around $1,300, then the Acer Nitro V 16S AI or Lenovo Legion 5i provides a brighter display, lighter design, higher-resolution webcam and bump to RTX 5060 graphics along with double the RAM and storage.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) werd in 1986 opgericht in Taiwan. MSI is vooral bekend als fabrikant van moederborden en grafische kaarten voor pc's, maar biedt ook computeraccessoires, complete systemen, moederborden, grafische kaarten, laptops, desktop-pc's, monitoren en andere componenten. De merknaam Microstar behoort in Duitsland echter toe aan het bedrijf Medion. MSI staat bekend om zijn gamingproducten en heeft een breed scala aan gaminglaptops en desktop-pc's ontwikkeld. Het bedrijf is ook actief in werkstations, servers en industriële automatisering. MSI heeft kantoren in Noord-Amerika, Europa, Azië en Australië.
Deze middenklasse grafische kaarten kunnen alle huidige spellen vloeiend spelen. Veeleisende spellen kunnen alleen met gemiddelde detail instellingen gespeeld worden.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU:
Grafische kaart uit het middensegment voor laptops gebaseerd op de Ada Lovelace-architectuur. Biedt 6 GB GDDR6 (96 bit) en is configureerbaar met een TGP van 35 - 115 W (+ Dynamic Boost).
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5050 Laptop: Instap grafische kaart uit de Blackwell-familie voor Latpops met 2.560 unified shaders (CUDA-kernen) en een kloksnelheid van 1500 - 2662 MHz, afhankelijk van de TDP-instelling. Volgens Nvidia zouden de prestaties zonder DLSS en framegeneratie vergelijkbaar moeten zijn met een RTX 4060.
Deze grafische kaarten zouden de meeste moderne spellen op een hoge resolutie en hoge details moeten kunnen draaien (enkele uitzonderingen zijn mogelijk).
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop: Een aankomende grafische kaart uit de Blackwell-familie voor laptops, die Team Green waarschijnlijk op CES 2025 zal presenteren. Aangezien de 4070 laptop 4.608 unified shaders (CUDA-kernen) heeft, zal de 5070 hoogstwaarschijnlijk meer dan 5.000 shaders hebben.

Op Alder Lake gebaseerde mobiele CPU met 6 prestatiekernen en 4 efficiencykernen. De prestatiekernen bieden hyper threading, wat leidt tot 16 verwerkbare threads. De processor draait op frequenties van 1,7 tot 4,7 GHz en ondersteunt vPro.
Intel Raptor Lake-HX:
i7-14650HX: High-end mobiele hybride processor op basis van de Raptor Lake architectuur met 16 cores (8 prestatie- en 8 efficiëntiekernen) en 24 threads. Gebaseerd op de Raptor Lake S 13700K chip.
i9-14900HX: High-end mobiele hybride processor gebaseerd op de Raptor Lake architectuur met 24 cores en 32 threads. Klokt op maximaal 5,8 GHz (P cores).
