Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 75.76 Hz ≤ 10 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 75.76 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 10 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 75.76 Hz is erg laag en kan dus aanleiding geven tot geïrriteerde ogen en hoofdpijn bij langer gebruik.

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9318 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde relatief trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 59 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd vergelijkbaar is met het gemiddelde (25.6 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Het € 450-segment is een harde markt, die nog zwaarder gemaakt wordt door de afgeprijsde vlaggenschepen van voorgaande jaren. Op papier lijkt het alsof de Nokia 8.1 het lastig krijgt tegen modellen als de Sony Xperia XZ2, maar HMD Global heeft het fantastisch gedaan door een goed gebalanceerde smartphone te maken die veel te bieden heeft.

De smartphone heeft een stijlvol design met een premium-feel, meer nog dan sommige duurdere smartphones. En de moderne SoC kan de strijd aan met de chips in de oudere vlaggenschepen. Ook de batterijduur is erg goed. Het beeldscherm is net zo helder als de topmodellen van vorig jaar en kan buiten in het volle zonlicht gebruikt worden. Tot slot maakten de camera's indruk op ons in de tests, zelfs als sommige features die de topmodellen wel hebben ontbreken.

De Nokia 8.1 voert de kernzaken goed uit en laat onnodige tierelantijnen achterwege en weet zo de afstand tussen de midden- en topklasse te verkleinen.

De Nokia 8.1 heeft ook minpunten. HMD Global heeft de smartphone uitgerust met langzaam eMMC-flashgeheugen en er ondersteuning voor minder LTE-banden dan we graag zien. Ook heeft het beeldscherm relatief hoge zwartwaarden en een zwakke contrastverhouding. Als je echter een beetje een Android purist bent en voor een betaalbare prijs het gevoel van een topmodel wilt hebben, dan moet je de Nokia 8.1 zeker overwegen als je volgende smartphone.
