De ZenBook nu in 14 inch. Asus breidt zijn ZenBook-serie uit met de 14-inch UX3410UA en past een 14-inch-scherm in een 13-inch-behuizing. Het aantrekkelijke design is onveranderd gebleven en het scherm en de algemene prestaties zijn meer dan toereikend. Alleen de huidige staat van de ventilator tast de goede indruk wat aan.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 54 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 10727 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 588200) Hz waargenomen.

De nieuwe Asus ZenBook UX3410UA volgt de trend van steeds groeiende schermen. Het 14-inch-paneel past perfect in de 13.3-inch-behuizing en ten opzichte van de gewone ZenBook UX310 zijn er nauwelijks negatieve aspecten, afgezien van de iets kortere WiFi-batterijduur. In tegendeel: de stabiliteit is nog beter dankzij de iets dikkere schermbehuizing en het uitstekende IPS-paneel verslaat met gemak het TN-scherm van de UX310 in elke opzicht.

De ZenBook UX3410UA is nog aantrekkelijker met het grotere scherm. Asus maakt ook gebruik van een erg goed ontspiegeld FHD-IPS-paneel.

De ZenBook weet ook op andere vlakken te overtuigen. De aluminium behuizing is elegant en stevig, het performance-gedrag van de processor is uitstekend en de invoerapparatuur is eveneens erg degelijk. Vier USB-poorten zijn lovenswaardig, al verwachten we geen trage USB 2.0-poorten in een toestel van 1200 euro. De geïntegreerde kaartlezer is ook wat aan de trage kant.

We waren minder overtuigd door de ventilator, die redelijk luid kan zijn en reeds bij lichte werklasten begint te draaien. Dit is misschien te wijten aan ons vroege testmodel en we hopen dan ook dat een software-update de situatie kan verbeteren. De identieke koeling in de gewone ZenBook UX310UQ is merkbaar stiller, ondanks de discrete grafische kaart in dit toestel.
