Kort testrapport Acer ConceptD 5 CN515-51 laptop: Kaby Lake G lichtgewicht heeft te kampen met besparingen

Wit veertje. Acer treedt met zijn ConceptD 5 CN515-51 op onbekende paden in een poging om zich van zijn concurrentie te onderscheiden. Zo beschikt het toestel over uiterst lichte materialen, Kaby Lake G met een geïntegreerde AMD-GPU en een 4K UHD-scherm met uitstekende kleurweergave. Tegelijkertijd is de Acer ook goedkoper dan andere multimedia-laptops met een 15.6-inch-scherm. Helaas werden de besparingen al snel duidelijk tijdens het testen.

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 50 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 18082 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Acer beschikt met de ConceptD 5 CN515-51 over een bijzondere multimedia-laptop.

Hij ziet er anders uit dan de andere modellen in deze klasse en legt de focus op een laag gewicht, dankzij de materialen van zijn behuizing. Dat is op zich een goede zaak, maar de zwakke schermbehuizing lijkt een kwalijk neveneffect te zijn van deze focus op een laag gewicht. Wat de poorten betreft heeft Acer Thunderbolt 3 achterwege gelaten. Ook wordt een extreem trage SD-kaartlezer gebruikt, die volledig misplaatst is in een multimedia-laptop met dit prijskaartje. Hetzelfde geldt voor de verouderde Wi-Fi-module, die zelfs de nieuwste Bluetooth-standaard niet ondersteunt. Zowel lovenswaardig als aanstootgevend is de upgradebaarheid: hoewel het RAM-geheugen volledig is gesoldeerd, kan de de opslagcapaciteit vrij eenvoudig worden opgewaardeerd dankzij de vrije M.2 2280-sleuf.

Het scherm van de Acer-notebook biedt een geweldige dekking van het kleurengamma, al stellen de lager dan beloofde helderheid en de merkbare 'backlight bleeding' ons wel teleur. Qua prestaties levert de ConceptD ongeveer wat we van Kaby Lake G verwachtten. Goede prestaties voor een multimedia-laptop, maar veel andere laptops met nieuwere Intel-CPU's en discrete Nvidia-GPU's leveren betere prestaties. Helaas leidt dit niet tot een langere batterijduur. Deze batterij komt met zijn kleine capaciteit immers roet in het eten strooien. Als negatieve punten moeten we ook de 'coil whine', de prestatiebeperking in batterij-modus en de ondermaatse luidsprekers (voor een multimedia-laptop) vermelden.

Niet zonder compromissen: Acer heeft helaas besloten om kosten te besparen op cruciale componenten. Het toestel kan zich niet meten met de duurdere concurrenten.

Voor ons is het onduidelijk op welk doelpubliek Acer zich richt met de ConceptD 5 CN515-51. Het meest opvallende pluspunt is het lage gewicht en het kleurrijke scherm. Met deze twee sterktes lijkt het toestel een droom voor fotografen te zijn. Deze doelgroep zal zich echter al snel ergeren aan de trage SD-kaartlezer. Daarnaast is de korte batterijduur een probleem voor gebruik onderweg. De ConceptD kan in principe gebruikt worden om games te spelen, maar is ook daarvoor niet echt geschikt.
