Een praktische gaming laptop! Acer heeft met zijn Nitro 5-serie meerdere keren bewezen dat gaming-laptops niet altijd extreem duur hoeven te zijn. Het bedrijf is weer terug met een nieuw 17,3-inch model dat is uitgerust met een Intel Core i7-9750H en een NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, die samen een solide basis voor deze gaminglaptop moeten creëren. Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde relatief trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 47 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd vergelijkbaar is met het gemiddelde (25 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Het scherm vertoonde trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.9 (minimum) tot 636 (maximum) ms. » 34 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd vergelijkbaar is met het gemiddelde (39.7 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM niet waargenomen

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9409 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

De Acer Aspire Nitro 5 AN517 is een stevige 17,3-inch laptop. Theoretisch zouden de Core i7-9750H en GeForce GTX 1660 Ti moeten zorgen voor een krachtig systeem, waarbij 16 GB dual-channel DDR4 RAM en 1,5 TB gecombineerde opslag ervoor zorgen dat het systeem soepel loopt. Helaas past het 1080p-scherm met zijn trage responstijden en hoge DeltaE-afwijkingen niet bij een gaming-laptop.

Zoals verwacht, bleek de Nitro 5 krachtig genoeg om alle moderne games te draaien. Dit is echter alleen van toepassing wanneer het apparaat is aangesloten op netstroom, omdat het systeem de CPU en GPU sterk beperkt op batterijvoeding. In feite wordt de Nitro 5 een kantoorapparaat op batterij, hoewel dit ook geldt voor veel andere moderne gaming-laptops.

De overwegend kunststof behuizing zal de meningen verdelen ondanks dat het stevig en goed gebouwd is. De Nitro 5 voelt en ziet er goedkoper uit en dan zijn volledig metalen concurrenten. Toch kan een plastic behuizing als compromis het waard zijn in ruil voor fatsoenlijke gaming prestaties.

De Nitro 5 onderscheid zich echter van de massa met een indrukwekkend laag stroomverbruik, met een energieverbruik in rust dat meer lijkt op een ultrabook dan op een gaming-laptop. Daarmee haalt onze testeenheid het maximale uit zijn 57 Wh-batterij. Er zijn slechts enkele andere apparaten die in de buurt komen van de looptijden van de Nitro 5.

Helaas bleek ook oververhitting tijdens onze tests een probleem, waarbij de Nitro 5 zijn CPU beperkte toen we de processor en de GPU tot het uiterste dreven in onze stresstests. Helaas heeft Acer de Nitro 5 uitgerust met het absolute minimum aan poorten, wat teleurstellend is. DisplayPort en een SD-kaartlezer zouden welkome toevoegingen zijn geweest, vooral gezien de hoeveelheid vrije ruimte tussen de poorten. Erger nog, de Type-C-poort ondersteunt ook geen DisplayPort, waardoor de mogelijkheden om de Nitro 5 via die video-uitgang op een externe monitor aan te sluiten, worden uitgeschakeld.

De Acer Aspire Nitro 5 AN517 is een degelijke budget gaming-laptop die veel goed doet, met name de bovengemiddelde batterijduur en het relatief lage stroomverbruik. Echter, door de buitensporig luide ventilatoren, de trage reactietijden en de kunststof behuizing kunnen potentiële klanten ergens anders gaan kijken.

Alles bij elkaar heeft Acer een competente en betaalbare 17,3-inch gaming-laptop met moderne hardware geproduceerd. Hoewel het onmogelijk is om de CPU of GPU te upgraden, zullen de Core i7-9750H en GTX 1660 Ti de komende paar jaar voldoende krachtig zijn voor gamen.
