Helaas zorgt de beperkte software ervoor dat we deze smartphone toch niet kunnen aanbevelen. Ook als je bedrijf niet afhankelijk is van de G Suite is het gebrek aan Google-diensten een probleem. Het zorgt er namelijk voor dat ook andere software minder makkelijk en veilig te installeren is. Alleen voor bedrijven die uitsluitend met Office 365 van Microsoft werken of vooral hun eigen software gebruiken is de Huawei P40 Pro het overwegen waard.

De afgelopen jaren waren wij vrij enthousiast over de kwaliteit van de producten van Huawei. Bij de P40 is dat enthousiasme nog steeds aanwezig. Het toestel is een fantastisch stuk hardware met een ongekend goede camera, een goed scherm en een enorm krachtige rekenkundig hart. Door het ontbreken van een volledige Android-versie is het toestel echter geen aanrader. Op dit moment draaien te veel populaire apps niet op de P40 Pro. Deels kan je dit oplossen door op een alternatieve manier apps te downloaden en te installeren, maar dat geldt niet voor alle apps. Voor een toestel van meer dan 800 euro zal dat voor velen onacceptabel zijn. Hopelijk bouwt Huawei de komende tijd haar eigen App Gallery uit, waardoor het argument van de ontbrekende apps tot de verleden tijd gaat behoren. Dan is het toestel zeker een aanrader!

De Huawei P40 Pro is ongetwijfeld een staaltje van Chinees smartphonevernuft, met een Leica-camera die alle andere smartphonecamera’s ver het nakijken geeft (en ook heel wat losse digitale camera’s). Deze smartphone heeft maar één tekortkoming en dat is het ontbreken van veel populaire apps omwille van de Amerikaanse boycot van Huawei. Dat gaat voor veel gebruikers echter een niet te overkomen obstakel vormen om te investeren in deze dure, goed presterende maar fundamenteel tekortkomende smartphone. We zien in feite maar één oplossing voor dit probleem: dat Huawei zo snel mogelijk zijn Amerikaanse problemen verhelpt en opnieuw samenwerkt met Google.

Nu is dat nog niet het geval en daarom kunnen we de P40 momenteel gewoon niet aanraden. De boycot van de Amerikaanse regering heeft daarmee het gewenste effect: de Chinese concurrent Huawei is de voet dwars gezet. Vraag is wie daarvan gaat profiteren. Wordt dat het Amerikaanse Apple, of de grote concurrent Samsung? Of weet Huawei nog een konijn uit de hoge hoed te toveren? Hoe dan ook, voor de P40 (Pro) is dat eigenlijk al te laat. Deze moet gezien worden als een tussenproduct op weg naar een nieuwe werkelijkheid voor Huawei die misschien met de P50 te zien zal zijn. Voor nu moet de P40 ondanks zijn prachtige camera een stapje terug doen.

De titel van deze review verraadt het al: de P40 Pro is een geplaagde topsmartphone. Het toestel heeft alles in huis om het de Samsung Galaxy S20, iPhone 11 Pro en OnePlus 8 Pro lastig te maken, maar hinkt op één been. Het ontbreken van een Google-certificatie maakt de P40 Pro zo lastig in gebruik en levert een dusdanig onzeker updatebeleid op dat ik met pijn in mijn hart schrijf dat de meeste mensen de Huawei P40 Pro beter links kunnen laten liggen. Als Huawei de telefoon op termijn alsnog kan laten certificeren door Google, kan daar verandering in komen. Of dat daadwerkelijk gaat gebeuren, blijft vooralsnog echter koffiedik kijken.

Conclusie: de hardware van de Huawei P40 Pro is erg goed en met de software valt te leven. Het toestel heeft een geweldige camera, een mooi ontwerp, ondanks zijn kleine punch hole notch volledige gezichtsherkenning en razendsnelle hardware. Los van kleine puntjes als het ontbreken van en audiojack en de batterij waar ik iets meer van verwacht had, is er op de hardware eigenlijk niks aan te merken.

For those who don’t require Google services on their smartphone, this is one of the best devices on the market right now and I wholeheartedly recommend it. It’s the handset to buy if you really want the best camera ever put into a smartphone. That’s not the situation for most people, however, and there are still many users who do require Google services. For those, I would say to skip this model and, if you still want a top-flight Huawei smartphone, go with the previous’ still-brilliant and Google-powered P30 Pro.

Overall the P40 Pro is an excellent phone. The camera is incredible and the general performance is brilliant, plus the P40 Pro just looks the part. But, and it’s a huge but, it is significantly handicapped without Google services and that ultimately makes the phone a hard sell to consumers. It’s a massive shame because this phone is brilliant (as I keep saying) and while Huawei has done a lot of work on its own AppGallery, consumers will want to have popular apps such as FaceBook, WhatsApp and Instagram at the ready, not to forget all the Google services. Coupled with the uncertain times the world is facing right now, it’s probably been the worst time to launch a smartphone.

Personally, I'd still use my Google-capable Android OS smartphone (such as users of the P30 Pro) until it properly conks out before I get the P40 Pro. But if that phone died tomorrow (touch wood), the P40 Pro would definitely be up for consideration because of all its plus points - great camera, good battery uptime, and a nice screen. Granted I might be missing out on some of the contactless payment options, it won't be long before Huawei gets around to that.

I would say that the HUAWEI P40 Pro is an impressive flagship from HUAWEI. Instead of just trying to sell mere numbers like most Chinese phone makers do, the HUAWEI P40 Pro actually makes an effort to sell you an experience. The 90 Hz Quad-Curve Overflow Display makes the HUAWEI P40 Pro wonderfully smooth both physically and visually, and the cameras generally offer an exceptionally easy-to-use experience with shots turning out great without any effort from the user. On the software front you get EMUI 10.1 which isn’t as remarkable as its hardware, you get quite a lot of features baked in like HUAWEI Share, EMUI Desktop and also MeeTime, setting it apart from your average flagship device.

ARM Mali-G76 MP16:

De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).

Kirin 990 5G: ARM-gebaseerde octa-core SoC met 2x Cortex-A76 tot 2,86 GHz (prestaties), 2x A76 met maximaal 2,36 (balans) en 4x Cortex-A53 met maximaal 1,95 GHz (energiebesparing). Integreert een neurale processor (2+1 kernen), een ARM Mali-G76 MP16 GPU tot 700 MHz en een Balong 5G-modem. In vergelijking met de 4G-versie is de 5G 990 iets hoger geklokt (2 van de 3 clusters en de GPU). De SoC wordt bij TSMC in 7nm geproduceerd.

Grote schermformaten laten hogere resoluties toe. Details zoals letters zijn groter. Anderzijds is het energieverbruik lager bij kleine schermdiagonalen en de toestellen zijn kleiner, lichter en goedkoper.
