After fully recharging the laptop, we set up the machine in power-save mode (as opposed to balanced or high-performance mode) and make a few other battery-conserving tweaks in preparation for our unplugged video rundown test. In this test, we loop a video—a locally stored MP4 file containing the full The Lord of the Rings trilogy—with screen brightness set at 50 percent and volume at 100 percent until the system conks out.

While the Acer Predator 17 X isn't the best gaming laptop out there, it does what it was meant to do—play games—pretty well. And if visuals are your thing, it's hard to beat a 17-inch 4K screen. That being said, it's somewhat prohibitively priced, as it doesn't use the most current graphics card or deliver unmatched performance. With the 17 X, you still get desktop-level graphics on high settings at 1,980-by-1,080 resolution, and the laptop is VR ready.

Overklokbare grafische kaart voor laptops gebaseerd op de desktop-GPU GTX 980. Prestaties zijn afhankelijk van de beschikbare koeling en voeding.
Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.
