Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 240.4 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 99 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 240.4 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Ter vergelijking: 53 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 17853 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz waargenomen.

Getest: de Samsung Galaxy S10 5G (SM-G977B) smartphone.

De Galaxy S10 5G onderscheidt zich van zijn concurrenten met meer dan alleen zijn 5G-modem. Dit laatste werpt echter een schaduw op heel wat aspecten die we anders positief zouden vinden in een smartphone. Neem nu bijvoorbeeld de batterij van 4500 mAh, die groter is dan eender welke smartphone-batterij met uitzondering van die in Mate 20 X. 4500 mAh is op papier erg indrukwekkend, maar de 5G-modem bijt er zo doorheen, waardoor ons testtoestel het minder dan 10 uur volhield in onze WiFi-test. Daarnaast verkoopt Samsung de S10 5G alleen met een vast abonnement bij een provider, waar we geen fan van zijn.

Samsung weigert nog altijd om ondersteuning toe te voegen voor aptX HD en hoewel de Exynos 9820 een krachtige SoC is, zorgt de ARM Mali-G76 MP12 GPU voor haperingen bij het spelen van veeleisende games. We begrijpen dat dit eerder een detail is, maar we verwachten toch meer van een smartphone van meer dan 1300 euro. Het weglaten van een microSD-sleuf valt eveneens moeilijk te slikken, zeker gezien het feit dat Samsung er reeds een installeerde in alle andere smartphones van de S10-serie. De speakers zullen evenmin prijzen winnen.

De Samsung Galaxy S10 5G is een sterk startschot voor de nieuwe 5G-standaard, maar een aantal minpunten temperen ons enthousiasme.

De S10 5G heeft in principe bijna alle features die je maar zou kunnen wensen van een modern vlaggenschip. Zijn reusachtige AMOLED-scherm wordt extreem helder en geeft kleuren levendig en accuraat weer. Samsung heeft ook uitstekende camera's en ToF-sensoren geïnstalleerd, waar we erg blij mee zijn. De ultrasone vingerafdruklezer werkt prima, net als die in de S10 en S10+, en het is leuk om de optie te hebben om 3D-gezichtsherkenning te gebruiken. De 3.5-mm koptelefoon-klink is eveneens welkom.

De Galaxy S10 5G is een uitstekende keuze als je op zoek bent naar een phablet, zelfs zonder zijn 5G-capaciteiten. Hij ziet er momenteel echter extreem duur uit in vergelijking met zijn S10-broertjes, terwijl zijn weinige, maar significante tekortkomingen potentiële kopers kunnen afschrikken.
