Als je een mooie krachtige laptop wil waar je jaren mee vooruit kan, dan is de Surface Laptop 4 zeker een laptop om te overwegen. Het product zit kwalitatief goed in elkaar en de prestaties zijn voor een laptop dik in orde. Als je al een Surface Laptop 3 of iets vergelijkbaars bezit, dan zouden we niet upgraden. De Surface Laptop 4 is uiteindelijk niet erg uniek ten opzichte van zijn voorganger. Ook is de keuze voor de AMD Zen2-architectuur een grote misser die pas bij een Surface Laptop 5 kan worden opgelost, iets wat nog minimaal een jaar gaat duren. Als je voor een Surface Laptop 4 gaat, bevelen we een Intel-variant aan.

De Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is een fraaie laptop om te zien die stevig gebouwd is. De processor in deze AMD-variant is sterk in multicore-toepassingen en hierdoor over het algemeen sneller dan de gebruikte chip in de Intel-variant. Het is jammer dat de AMD-processor daarom niet verkrijgbaar is als absoluut topmodel voorzien van veel werkgeheugen en opslag. Met zijn hoge schermverhouding en prettige toetsenbord is dit een laptop waar je comfortabel op kunt werken. Helaas heeft de Surface Laptop 4 wel een groot nadeel en is het gebrek aan aansluitingen. Twee usb-poorten is namelijk niet al niet ruim voor een 15inch-notebook. Ook de Surface Connect vinden we maar onhandig, dat had beter een tweede usb-c-aansluiting kunnen zijn waarmee het gebrek aan poorten ook voor een groot deel was opgelost.

De Surface Laptop 4 is een premiumlaptop en dat merk je aan de stevige en mooi afgewerkte behuizing en de vlotte hardware. Terwijl Zen 3 al beschikbaar is, heeft Microsoft de laptop voorzien van een Zen 2-processor, maar het weet daarvan wel het onderste uit de kan te halen. Dat betaalt zich uit in goede prestaties en een verbeterde accuduur van tien en een half uur, wat twee uur langer is dan zijn voorganger. Het scherm heeft een prettige 3:2-verhouding, een hoge resolutie en een goede kalibratie. De prijs ligt lager dan bij de Surface Laptop 3. Dat maakt deze vierde generatie niet meteen goedkoop, maar je krijgt er wel veel laptop voor terug.

The AMD-powered 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 is a potent ultraportable for the productivity-minded, offering good performance and battery life in a slim, bloatware-free package. The 3:2 display ratio really shines on the 15-inch screen, making it great for working through documents and browsing the web. It's a strong contender for one of the best laptops you can buy if you need to get work done, especially when you factor in the great sound quality, respectable battery life, and decent game performance. Of course, there's still plenty of room for improvement. I'd love to see a Surface Laptop with thinner bezels, a more diverse selection of ports, and a better webcam. It would have been great to see Microsoft figure out a way to include the latest Ryzen 5000-series mobile CPUs, too. Still, the 15-inch Surface Laptop 4’s spacious screen, subtle design, and solid combination of performance and longevity ensure it will serve you well while you're working at home or on the go.

All in all, the Surface Laptop 4 is a decent device for work purposes. It has a large screen despite being lightweight, and Microsoft has pre-installed some programs inside. This includes Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams, which many people use for their work. In terms of performance, it's certainly more than capable of handling any office work. If we could improve the Surface Laptop 4, we would add more I/O ports and perhaps shrink the bezels around the display a bit more. While the battery test didn't meet our expectations, the laptop can easily last longer if you don't stream YouTube Music as much as we did. But what do you think?

But getting back to the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4, I still really liked it, though there’s no way I’m buying it for myself. Even with the nitpicks about its design from last year, and last-gen processor, anyone looking for a 15-inch laptop without the need for a graphics card will find the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 among the best that they can get out there if they can afford it. It’s just not clearly the best in 2021, the way it would have been if this was 2020.

Ultimately, the Surface Laptop 4 feels like a missed opportunity. I have no qualms with Microsoft leaving most of the notebook unchanged but their decision to use last year’s AMD processors is puzzling. And even if you take into account the model that uses Intel’s latest Tiger Lake processor, Microsoft’s refusal to update the USB-C port with Thunderbolt support makes it the only S$2,000 ultraportable notebook that I know of that only comes with a standard USB-C port. There’s no shortage of smaller more compact notebooks that are just as, if not faster. And if you really need a notebook with a larger display, LG’s gram 16 looks like the better option. It weighs a lot less, has a slightly larger display, better ports (with Thunderbolt support), and it even costs less. Back to the drawing board, Microsoft.

The XPS 13 and 15 are the closest competition, and if you're ambivalent about Windows, and new M1 Macbooks are excellent, but for a solid Windows machine that just works, the Surface Laptop 4 is here for you.

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.
