It has a very long battery life, 802.11n wireless networking (Ralink 1t2r), Intel GMA 500 graphics, and two storage devices: a solid-state drive and a conventional spinning hard drive. As far as netbooks go, the MSI Wind U115 is a very interesting proposition but it's not without its problems. For travellers — or anyone who wants to work for long periods of time away from a power outlet — the MSI Wind U115 is perfect. Its battery life is the longest we've seen in an Intel Atom-based netbook, lasting well over five hours. We also like the inclusion of an SSD drive, but we wish it had a larger storage capacity.

MSI Wind U115 Hybrid is a netbook that you’ll instantly like, most of all for its battery life lasting anywhere from 5 to 11 hours, depending on the workload. MSI Wind U115 seems perfect for work on long journeys or a day on the beach. Despite its small form factor that might discourage anyone from typing, U115’s keyboard is large enough to provide comfortable work even after a few hours of typing. The hybrid combination of SSD and HDD storage devices has its pros, most evident in long battery life, but such a thing always reflects on the price. Unfortunately, SSD pricing is still pretty high, so the U115 comes with only an 8GB SSD.

  MSI Wind U115 Hybrid brings both speed and size to netbook storage. MSI's Wind netbooks have been well received and extensively rebranded by many manufacturers, including Medion and Advent. MSI now brings unique storage and outstanding mobility with its own-brand Wind U115 Hybrid. With its unique storage and exceptional mobility, the Wind U115 Hybrid is one of the best netbooks around. Its high-price is off-putting though, so carefully consider your needs and budget.

  The MSI Wind U115 Hybrid has a good screen, relatively spacious keyboard and amazing battery life, thanks to its SSD and HDD combination. But, given its tired-looking design and rather average performance in areas other than battery life, we're not sure it's worth the £150 premium over most other netbooks.

Taking a cue from automakers, MSI has created the industry's first hybrid netbook. Like a Honda Prius, the MSI Wind U115 Hybrid aims to run longer by pairing a power-saving technology with a traditional one—in this case, a solid-state drive (SSD) and a standard hard drive. It's an interesting idea, but the results are mixed. While the battery life ranges from excellent to out-of-this-world, overall performance is just average. What's more, we encountered a few technical glitches that made for a frustrating experience. Though its stellar battery life will appeal to road warriors, the pricey, bulky MSI Wind U115 Hybrid suffers from a few debilitating flaws that are hard to overlook.

All of which was not as good as MSI claims, but it’s still a worthy operational duration for a computer of this nature. We like the concept behind the Eco mode with its dual hard drives, only it wasn’t as easy to invoke. The only way of enabling this feature was from a Function Key, where as soon as the computer was rebooted all the settings were lost. Seeing as Windows does like a reboot every now and then, this could be bothersome in the long run. A better idea would be to use or run all this from a profile, which is sadly missing here and very much needed we feel.

Innovation can be a double-edged sword. While we've been frank in our criticism of netbooks for their lack of just that, it's as much a reflection of the sector and its demands as the strategy of any manufacturer - when you're trying to make low-cost devices there isn't a great deal of wiggle room! MSI should be praised for the idea of a hybrid netbook and the battery life results demonstrate that this part of the U115 is a success. However, despite a decent feature set, £450 is far too much to ask for an otherwise uninspiring netbook.

There's no denying that the U115 offers extraordinarily long battery life and its performance scores are up there with some of the best SCCs we've seen. The combination of both SSD and HDD in one unit is a clever trick, so you can use each storage medium for what it does best. The big problem with the U115, though, is its price. Even if it was just £50 cheaper, it'd be much more compelling. It doesn't have the looks to pull off a premium price tag and although it's a good performer, it's verging into traditional laptop territory.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: De Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD (soms ook GMA X4500 HD genoemd) is een DirectX 10 onboard videokaart voor de GM45, GE45 en GS45 chipset van het Centrino 2 platform (Montevina). De chip heeft geen eigen geheugen, maar kan dynamisch gebruik maken van het RAM geheugen (tot 384MB).  

Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.

Z530: Stroombesparende versie van de Atom N270 met virtualisatie ondersteuning en meer energie besparingsfuncties. De prestaties zijn vergelijkbaar met de Atom N270 en daarmee enkel geschikt voor basis taken.

Grote schermformaten laten hogere resoluties toe. Details zoals letters zijn groter. Anderzijds is het energieverbruik lager bij kleine schermdiagonalen en de toestellen zijn kleiner, lichter en goedkoper.

1 kg: Dit gewicht is typisch voor grote tablets, kleine subnotebooks, ultrabooks en convertibles met een 10-11 inch schermdiagonaal.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) werd in 1986 opgericht in Taiwan. MSI is vooral bekend als fabrikant van moederborden en grafische kaarten voor pc's, maar biedt ook computeraccessoires, complete systemen, moederborden, grafische kaarten, laptops, desktop-pc's, monitoren en andere componenten. De merknaam Microstar behoort in Duitsland echter toe aan het bedrijf Medion. MSI staat bekend om zijn gamingproducten en heeft een breed scala aan gaminglaptops en desktop-pc's ontwikkeld. 78.93%: Dit cijfer is niet echt overtuigend. Het moet in acht worden genomen dat er bijna geen laptops zijn die een score onder de 60% hebben. Dit notebook is beneden gemiddeld beoordeeld, en is niet aanbevolen te kopen.
