The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 is a balanced device. It’s not a 3 kg powerhouse but its performance is very good given the low weight and the thin profile. Yes, portability is one of the biggest advantages of this machine. At the same time, the P-series CPU can sustain a 32W power limit and decent P and E core clocks under heavy stress. In short and medium loads, these frequencies are higher which results in fast responsiveness for everyday tasks. The comfort during load is good, the single fan isn’t too loud when the CPU is at max load. If not, the notebook is definitely quieter. The base isn’t scorching hot even during gaming – it just feels warm to the touch. Sure, this is a workstation, but the optional dedicated NVIDIA RTX A500 (Laptop, 30W) is fast enough for playing new games on Medium or maybe High settings. The input devices are pleasant.

The ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 is a great laptop for getting work done. It comes well-equipped for productivity with a display that’s exceptionally easy to see in a wide variety of conditions, both dark and bright. The hardware inside zips along, easily handling everyday computing tasks and even muscling through some heavier lifts. Using the computer is all the more enjoyable thanks to an excellent keyboard that regular typists will love. Being a work machine, there’s a little to be desired design-wise. While recent consumer machines have gotten a glow-up, the ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 still looks fairly utilitarian, is kind of thick, and has chunky bezels around the display (at least the top bezel gives you an IR webcam).

I’ve been using the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4 as my main laptop for the past few weeks and I’ve really enjoyed it. One of the biggest things I was worried about was how heavy it was going to be compared to my thin and light laptop that is usually my daily driver. Being just under 3lbs it didn’t really add much extra weight or bulk to my backpack and the 100W power adapter is quite small. The best part of using a laptop like this over something like a more mainstream laptop is the added power you get. First you have the Intel Core i7-1370P vPro processor which handled everything I threw at it from normal every day things like web browsing to more intensive tasks like video editing. On top of that you do get dedicated graphics from NVIDIA’s RTX A500 laptop GPU. Having dedicated graphics takes the load off of your CPU for more GPU-intensive tasks and will speed up things like encoding or rendering.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" uit de Engelse legende, novo (Latijn voor nieuw) werd in 1984 opgericht als Chinees handelsbedrijf in computers. In 2004 was het bedrijf de grootste laptopfabrikant in China en, na de overname van IBM's pc-divisie in 2005, de op drie na grootste ter wereld. Naast desktops en notebooks produceert het bedrijf monitoren, projectors, servers, enz. en is het gespecialiseerd in de ontwikkeling, productie en marketing van consumentenelektronica, pc's, software, bedrijfsoplossingen en aanverwante diensten.

In 2016 stond het bedrijf op de eerste plaats in de wereld wat betreft computerverkopen. Dit was in 2023 nog steeds het geval, met een wereldwijd marktaandeel van ongeveer 23%. Belangrijke productlijnen zijn Thinkpad, Legion en Ideapad.

In 2011 verwierf het een meerderheidsbelang in Medion AG, een Europese fabrikant van computerhardware. In 2014 werd Motorola Mobility gekocht, wat Lenovo een boost gaf op de smartphonemarkt.

Deze middenklasse grafische kaarten kunnen alle huidige spellen vloeiend spelen. Veeleisende spellen kunnen alleen met gemiddelde detail instellingen gespeeld worden.

NVIDIA RTX A500 Laptop GPU:

Grafische kaart voor professionele laptops uit het middensegment, gebaseerd op de Ampere GA106-chip met 2.048 CUDA-kernen. Langzamer dan de GeForce GTX 3050 voor consumenten met gecertificeerde drivers. Verkrijgbaar in verschillende prestatievarianten, variërend van 20 - 60 W TGP (max. stroomverbruik).

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

AMD Radeon 780M:

Geïntegreerde grafische kaart in de Ryzen 7040 mobiele serie APU's gebaseerd op de RDNA3-architectuur met 12 CU's (= 768 shaders) en een kloksnelheid tot 3 GHz.

Intel Raptor Lake-P:

i5-1340P: Op Raptor Lake-P gebaseerde CPU met een TDP van 28 Watt. Biedt 4 prestatiekernen en 8 efficiëntiekernen en dus 16 threads.

i7-1370P: De high-end Alder Lake-P CPU met 6 prestatiecores en 8 efficiënte cores. Deze i7 is ontworpen voor gebruik in ultralichte laptops; de prestatiecores zijn voorzien van de draadverdubbelende Hyper-Threading-technologie voor maar liefst 20 threads in totaal. De CPU draait op bijwerken tot 5,2 GHz en heeft de "Enterprise" tier vPro functieset. Core i7-1370P heeft een basisvermogen van 28 W en de 96 EU Iris Xe iGPU.

AMD Phoenix (Zen 4, Ryzen 7040):

R7 PRO 7840U: High-end mobiele 8-core processor gebaseerd op de Zen 4 architectuur. De CPU-kernen klokken tot 5,1 GHz en voeren 16 threads tegelijk uit. Integreert een XDNA Ai-Engine. De TDP is instelbaar tussen 35 en 54 Watt. Vergeleken met de consumenten-Ryzen 7 7840U bieden de PRO-modellen extra beveiligings-, beheerbaarheids- en betrouwbaarheidsfuncties die zijn ontworpen voor professionele gebruikers en werkstationomgevingen.
