Zwakke quadro. Na een blik te hebben geworpen op de ThinkPad P52s leken we een déjà-vu te ervaren. Het mobiele werkstation lijkt namelijk sprekend op de ThinkPad T580. Is het combineren van een zakelijke notebook behuizing met een Quadro GPU een goed idee? Lees het in dit artikel.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 95 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (26 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (41.6 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 21550 Hz ≤ 91 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 21550 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 91 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 21550 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 54 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 10727 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 588200) Hz waargenomen.

Tot nu is het concept van een werkstation met energie-efficiënte processoren nooit echt goed uit de verf gekomen. De Lenovo ThinkPad P52s is de eerste laptop waarbij dit idee aan begint te slaan.

Dit komt voornamelijk door de Ultra-Low-Voltage processoren van Kaby Lake Refresh generatie, die grote sprongen in rekenkracht hebben gemaakt. Hoewel de CPU prestaties nog ver af liggen van 45 Watt Coffee Lake CPU's, voldoet de chip aan de eisen van een mobiel werkstation. Daarnaast presteert de processor bovengemiddeld goed en aanzienlijk beter dan in de ZBook 15u G5. Ook heeft de P52s meerdere sterke kanten overgenomen van de ThinkPad T580, waaronder de robuuste behuizing met onderhoudsmogelijkheden, de populaire ThinkPad invoerapparaten, het grote aanbod van moderne poorten, de vele beveiligingsmogelijkheden en garantietermijn. In tegenstelling tot de T580 heeft dit testmodel lange looptijden n PowerBridge, wat grote voordelen met zich meebrengt.

Ironisch genoeg is de Quadro P500, het enige echte verschil tussen de P52s en ThinkPad T580, gelijk de zwakste schakel. De prestaties van de Quadro GPU zijn geen partij voor de GeForce MX150 in de T580 vanwege een klein aantal shaders. Ook zijn diverse aandachtspunten van de T580 overgenomen door de P52s, zoals de lange laadtijden en grote warmteontwikkeling. Het beeldscherm van onze P52s heeft slechts een Full-HD resolutie. Bepaalde testresultaten komen ver uit boven de door Lenovo beloofde waardes, waaronder het contrast. Echter, het kleurenspectrum is nog steeds teleurstellend, wat een significant nadeel is voor een mobiel werkstation.

We kunnen de Lenovo ThinkPad P52s aanbevelen, maar zal alleen aantrekkelijk zijn voor gebruikers die weinig vragen van de GPU.

Kunnen we het apparaat een aanbeveling geven? In principe wel. Het apparaat verslaat de direct concurrent, de HP ZBook 15u, op vele vlakken. De ZBook scoort alleen hoger op temperatuurbeheersing en een hoogwaardige afwerking van de behuizing. Echter, de P52s is alleen geschikt voor een kleine doelgroep aangezien de ThinkPad T580 dezelfde kwaliteiten als de P52s biedt en een sterkere GPU bevat. Alleen gebruikers van CAD software kunnen de voorkeur geven aan de P52s, maar dan opnieuw rest de vraag of deze potentiële kopers niet kiezen voor een groter, zwaarder werkstation met een sterkere CPU en GPU. Dit beperkt de markt tot een aantal gebruikers die veel waarde hechten aan lange looptijden en een energiezuinige GPU die geoptimaliseerd is voor CAD.
