Zo goedkoop als mogelijk. De Y5 2018 is momenteel een van de goedkoopste smartphones in Huawei's westerse productfamilie. Voor 120 euro krijgen kopers het standaardpakket voor deze prijsklasse. Volstaat dit om de zwerm concurrenten van zich af te slaan?

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 166.7 Hz ≤ 25 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 166.7 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 25 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 166.7 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Ter vergelijking: 54 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 8895 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 14 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (25.9 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Huawei bespaart op heel wat vlakken bij de Huawei Y5 2018: de matige luidspreker, eenvoudige plastic behuizing en het ontbreken van de 5 GHz WLAN-band zijn slechts enkele voorbeelden. In ruil moeten kopers maar 120 euro ophoesten voor een smartphone met moderne, dunne schermranden, prima batterijduur en degelijke camera's. 

Een lage prijs en degelijke features: de Huawei Y5 2018 is een waardige budget-telefoon.

Aangezien het best wel even kan duren voordat je media of app geladen is, kan je als koper maar beter geen performance-fanaat zijn - maar al bij al biedt de Huawei Y5 2018 een goede prijs/prestaties-verhouding. Wie betere hardware wenst voor dezelfde prijs kan zich wenden tot de Umidigi A1 Pro, die 5 GHz WLAN ondersteunt, een quick-charge-functie heeft en gehuld is in een hippe behuizing. Deze features gaan echter wel gepaard met een iets kortere batterijduur.
